There once was a band NOT from Nantucket....

But they called themselves Nantucket anyway.

Nantucket started in 1969 in North Carolina play a sub-genre called "Beach Music" which was popular in Virginia, The Carolina's and Georgia mostly. in '71 they changed over to being a cover band and changed their name to Nantucket Sleighride after the song and album by Mountain. That is what they were the first time I saw them in Beaufort, SC in '72.

After slogging it out for 8 years they were signed by Epic in '77 and put out their first album the next year. Epic seemed to have faith in them send the band out to open for Kiss, Journey, Styx. The Doobie Brothers and Boston. The album did OK but the 2nd - "Your Face Or Mine" - not as well. After Bon Scott of AC/DC died the band started using "It's A Long Way To The Top" in tribute as their encore. The recorded version below isn't even close to the live performance. Angus saw them play this and asked them to open for the Back in Black tour.

Given all the chances and breaks you would think they could have made it but they didn't have a good songwriter which was needed to sustain the public's interest. As a bar band though, they were hard to beat. Counting the openings I probably saw them a dozen times over 15 years with 8 being in bars from chicken wire enclosed stage to places that held 500 people and they tore it up every time.

Journey had the black light poster-ready beetle. Nantucket had the... lobster man?

I see what you mean... The band sounds really good but the lyrics are pretty weak... and that was their hit, what do the B-sides sound like... 😬
