Latest Cigar Box Project

What kind of material is the shade? How well do you think the bands will stand up over time?
The shade has a somewhat hard plastic inside liner and the outside is actually some sort of paper. The reason I chose that shade is it somewhat resembles a cigar wrapper...if you use your imagination, and knowing I wanted to use bands, I thought with the glue stick a paper type shade would hold the bands well. When I put the glue stick on the bands and placed the bands on the shade, they took VERY well, I don't see any issues of the bands coming lose, but if they do, I think you could just reglue them.

I noticed that the guy who built the lamps on that other site that grateful1 provided the link to didn't opt to put bands on the shades. His shades are definitely high end and REALLY "make" the lamp so to speak. I also noticed that he charges about $200.00 for his lamps :0 which I think is insane BUT if he has to spend around $100.00 on those fancy shades, I suppose the price isn't really that bad.
I havent checked out the link yet so I suppose I should. The shade I bought was $19.95 so pretty inexpensive, but I loved the way it looked. Considering I wasn't sure how this would end up looking, I also didn't want to stick a bunch into it. However in the end, I'd use that same shade if I ever do the floor lamp version I want to try next. I was at work pretty late last night and have the lamp in my office, the shade just seemed to compliment the overall lamp well IMHO.

Another area of concern is you may want to think about stiffening up the part of the box where the rod fastens to it (the bottom of the lamp). Most cigar boxes are made of relatively thin material and this would most likely be a weak point in the design of the lamp.
I have 3/8" fender washers supporting the bottom jamb nut so I'm pretty sure that will be fine, and at lunch today I got thinking about a wooden dowel bored out and rounded on top to fit the tube, that should supply all the support I'd need to tighten things down well.

Nice conversation Bill, thank you!

Wade is not here just to sell his creations, but he does a fine job of promoting what he has available, if anyone is interested : humidors, custom trays, cigar box clocks and lamps. Wade, if you don't want anyone to question your intentions, then why not keep these threads in the right forum - Hot Deals / Trading Forum? ( This has all been discussed previously yada yada yada.... ) . Please keep it in the proper area to maintain the integrity of the forum.
...Several members have posted threads on walk in humidors they've built, smoking rooms and such yet we don't chastise them for potentially having someone ask if they could do the same for them.

I'm so sorry - I must have missed that... Was there someone on this board that showed off their walk in Humi that is now entertaining creating them for others and charging for it?

When does a hobby become a business? Building clocks, lamps, bird houses, walk-in humidors, etc. where the cost of the final product far exceeds the value of the parts involved is turning a hobby into a business no matter how you try to spin it. Let's just please be honest about it and not try to play like we're doing each other favors. It just really feels all slimey when you try to put the "hobby" spin on it - like a used car salesman trying to convince you the car you're looking at was only driven by a little old lady to and from church on Sunday's...

BTW - the lamp is no doubt cute - but my wife would not even entertain putting it in our living room. I believe she would relegate it to the basement, unfortunately...

With all due respect, you have totally misunderstood the intent of the post on the lamp, humidors, (not sure what the custom tray is Link- "Lee didn't want tops on them so they're just plain ol' boxes. The trays for his wineodor I didn't take pics of before I sent them" ). The humidor post I made was simply to show others what I've made, I've never taken an order for one although several have PM'd about it. The lamp is the same thing, several have asked, only Opus Mex has been taken care of as he asked me before the lamp post was ever put on the site. Again, simply posted just to show what was done. Several members have posted threads on walk in humidors they've built, smoking rooms and such yet we don't chastise them for potentially having someone ask if they could do the same for them.

The clocks are different, Gonz (who I know from a motorcycle site also) sent me a PM say something along the lines of "hey, I saw those on CF, why not post them here"? My reply was similar to "maybe in time, but for now I just want to get used to the forum and see what the site has to offer", it wasn't till later that I decided I'd put them out there to see if there was any interest. So then all the issues started over the clocks, and it was mentioned to put it in the Vendor area, fine, really isn't an issue to me where they are, hell, I haven't made one post to that thread or added one clock since, so you win.

The lamps are not for sale, I'm not putting up a post where I'll entertain orders at all, I'll do Adrians as he asked me to and I said I would. If anyone else wants one, they can PM me and well work something out there, not that I'm trying to hide anything, but no sense adding fuel to these ridiculous fires. Actually if the lamps are PM only, the best thing you can do is stop posting to the thread, it will die and get buried and they will be forgotten anyway. Which is no loss as they were never intended to be a for sale/trade item. It was informational only.

So the humidors aren't technically for sale/ trade, because you haven't successfully closed a deal from an interested party who has PM'd you.
The custom box / trays are for sale / trade.
The clocks are definitely for sale / trade - but sales are slow.
And the lamps are not for sale...but if anyone wants one, they can PM you !

Got it. :whistling:

Oh yeah, forgot about the trays for Lee. However he contacted me out of the blue, so what should I have done, just ignore him, say no? As a matter of fact, I sent those to Lee about 2 months ago and haven't received anything in return, and never once have I contacted him about it, I was glad to help. Even though I bought a sheet of 1/4 Spanish Cedar plywood at my cost of $80 just for his project, not once have I asked him about his end. He's a friend and that's what you do for friends. I'm not the evil sales monster you want to make me out to me mmm. But I guess I should be flattered that you feel the need to keep such close tabs on my activities here on CP, hey, I got a fan club!

Is it about you - or the board?

Wade - the lamp is very, very nice.
Truly, what did you expect to happen in this thread?
You are known for making some nice cigar related products and then selling them.
What did you think the reaction would be to your post?

Is it about you - or the board?
Out of respect for you I'll leave that one alone.

Truly, what did you expect to happen in this thread?[/quote}What did I expect, for those that had an issue with the clocks to let that stay behind them. The original post said NOTHING about selling these, just was an informational post. The idea of selling/trading the lamps did not come from me.

What would the problem with that be anyway? I mean for Christs sake, someone can't make a product and sell it to people who want it? I mean hell, life as we know it has been based on the thought of a product or service and how to market it. Now that being said, I certainly understand the concept of not gouging a BOTL/SOTL, but my dear Lord, I just don't understand how a freakin' post about look at a lamp I made turned into such an issue. Oh actually I do know, who and how.

I really could care less if you sell, trade or give away your clocks, lamps, humidors ect. All I'd like to see is a little respectful dialog directed towards respected members that devote alot of time in adding to CP... let me say it again... RESPECTFUL MEMBERS THAT DEVOTE ALOT OF TIME IN ADDING TO CP. Arrogant responses to them is a huge slap in the face. In this instance it was MMM. Simple non arrogant answers to any questions asked by these types of members should be a no brainer. No one is to cool to be respectful to them. Food for thought Wade.

I dunno, Mike - yeah - respect it always good, no doubt. Really - you should engage in respectful dialog. I see your point and I agree with you there...

But HONESTY... Now honesty is really, really nice too. I kinda like it when people are up front and honest in their dealings. Makes me feel purty good about doing transactions with 'em down the road...

So, you made the lamp to sell?

He said "NO!!!"

But - PM him if you want one, though - he'll figure something out...

Tell me what you mean for cryin out loud

I'm sorry - You're honest, Mike. I really like that about you.

But I really wish others were honest like you too...

Why don't you just assume that tick-tock is selling/going to sell/thinking about selling anything he posts a picture of. You'll save yourself a bunch of aggravation that way.
