Tick Tock
The shade has a somewhat hard plastic inside liner and the outside is actually some sort of paper. The reason I chose that shade is it somewhat resembles a cigar wrapper...if you use your imagination, and knowing I wanted to use bands, I thought with the glue stick a paper type shade would hold the bands well. When I put the glue stick on the bands and placed the bands on the shade, they took VERY well, I don't see any issues of the bands coming lose, but if they do, I think you could just reglue them. What kind of material is the shade? How well do you think the bands will stand up over time?
I havent checked out the link yet so I suppose I should. The shade I bought was $19.95 so pretty inexpensive, but I loved the way it looked. Considering I wasn't sure how this would end up looking, I also didn't want to stick a bunch into it. However in the end, I'd use that same shade if I ever do the floor lamp version I want to try next. I was at work pretty late last night and have the lamp in my office, the shade just seemed to compliment the overall lamp well IMHO.I noticed that the guy who built the lamps on that other site that grateful1 provided the link to didn't opt to put bands on the shades. His shades are definitely high end and REALLY "make" the lamp so to speak. I also noticed that he charges about $200.00 for his lamps :0 which I think is insane BUT if he has to spend around $100.00 on those fancy shades, I suppose the price isn't really that bad.
I have 3/8" fender washers supporting the bottom jamb nut so I'm pretty sure that will be fine, and at lunch today I got thinking about a wooden dowel bored out and rounded on top to fit the tube, that should supply all the support I'd need to tighten things down well.Another area of concern is you may want to think about stiffening up the part of the box where the rod fastens to it (the bottom of the lamp). Most cigar boxes are made of relatively thin material and this would most likely be a weak point in the design of the lamp.
Nice conversation Bill, thank you!
