i think if you read my original post i said they are expensive, if i am buying over 1000 cigars from a average joe what do you think he wants for them if he paid msrp? now if you have some 03-05 opus x you want to sell me or anyone else at below msrp lmk. you also have to keep in mind most stores do not charge msrp for rare fuentes due to local tobacco tax. hell i am still cheaper than casa fuente LOL

I didn't know that 3 years on a regular production Opus demanded double msrp. Is that the going rate? Is this ebay now?

Yeah, little high. I would say the general 10% per year of age is doable.

I just want some clarification and by no means is this a bash of MindRiot, I just want to know for my own knowledge-

1) Is it acceptable for a retailer to sell items at an expensive premium due to age? rarity?

2) Just because a retailer decided to purchase a large collection at a msrp is it acceptable to mark the items up to create a margin on these smokes?

3) I guess what I would like to know is what constitutes a rediculous mark up in a situation like this? I know that gouging (again I am not saying MindRiot is doing this because I do not know what he paid) is not tolerated at all in a member to member transaction, in fact I have been flamed for asking what I paid, but is there a higher level of tolerence for retailers?

Any feedback is very much appreciated because I am hoping to learn from this :).

I'm sorry if you don't like the prices. You don't have to purchase them. Did I mention they are expensive? Nope this isn't an auction, so it's not ebay.

Yes, you did mention that.

This community has retailers who are waaaay over priced. Most overseas sales are a lot...yet, they are that price there due to country VAT and such (for the most part).

We aren't overseas. Just be aware of what the going rate 'should' be for cigars.

Like I said, we'll find out.

Gary as always your insight is amazing :sign: I have learned so much :). Thank you .

Jim

Edit: To say thanks for the additional info that is what I was hoping to see. Thank you!!

A collector with a sale that large isn't an 'average joe'. If he is a selling them at a large premium, then he's not an average joe - he's a profiteer.(edit - I'm sure this can and will be debated)

I think the point is, these are not that old. Yes, you can see very old boxes and OR's going for multipe times the original price...just not these.

This may just be a wake up call to newer folks to look around a little, you'll find stuff our there!

I live in the middle of nowhere in a very small town. There's no B&M even remotely near me. Closest place that mildly resembles a B&M is a liquor store that has a small walk-in humi and charges well over MSRP on pretty much everything in there. They sell a good bit of Fuente smokes, however Opus? Anejo? Never seen them there before. Asked the guy once if he ever got any in and if I remember correctly was told if he did they would be crazy expensive.

I have a couple of sources online that I have asked for eight months if they have any more coming in and have been told, "Nothing yet" every time. Other than that? I have no idea where to purchase Opus/Anejos unless some pops up in a sale, and even when you sit at the computer 24/7 (yes...I pretty much do :D ), you're still liable to miss 'em. So, I saw this sale and checked it out. 4 Super Belis from 2003 right at $100. The last Super Belis I bought (not quite a year ago) were $13.50 per stick, which I though was quite high but still paid it. I saw this price and closed the window. I thought about it and said to myself, "Self, they're Opus from 03 and a favorite vitola. Buy them." Went back to the site and ordered them. Felt quite sick doing it paying $25 a stick. Almost double what I paid before. But, if I want Opus from 03, where else is there to get them?

This my friend is a situation that should have had you sending me a message! I would have been more than willing to take care of you on this. Heck we could have traded for the Mag 50EL your sitting on LOL. But seriously next time PM me because this would not have been a problem.

ISO post! or here. It may take a while or not at all - that's part of the cigar smokers journey!(fo me)

I tell ya, I have GOT to find those Mag 50's for ya somewhere! :D I dunno, just doesn't feel right asking for someone's personal cigars. Now if they're posted for sale, then PM coming! It just feels pretty good picking up smokes "fair and square" I guess. I just went on the Silo site and cancelled the order. The more I think about it, I can get a whole box of some decent stuff for $100. Or at least a couple Mag 50's! :p

By no means am I trying to back anyone up here. Just to make a case here for Mindriot. Basing your 10% per year age increase scthornton, I will give the following example. One stick of a Power Ranger is MSRP, those sticks are about 9.25. The ones I got were from 2004, so from 2004-2008 is what we will look at here, base on 10% raise each year. In year 2005 the price would be $0.93 more which would in turn make the price $10.18. In year 2006, lets keep the 10% of the original price which would be again $0.93, year 2006 total would be $11.11. In year 2007, doing the same thing 10% of the original $9.25, would make the total to 12.04. (if you add in year 2008 that total is $12.97) I paid, 59 bucks for 4 of them, that in turn goes to $14.75. That is a $1.78 difference; Now call me stupid, but that is not much of a profit at all.

It all comes down to this, yes there are good deals out there, but I felt that this one was close enough to being a good deal. Was not a Great deal by any means. But Mindriot, is not ripping us off like some other places may do. So of the people on this site may get better deals, so be it, thats great for you. But people like me do not have the opportunity yet. Thus at my time and day, this was the best deal I could find. I beat myself up awhile back buying an opus for 18 bucks when the MSRP was only 8 something. My .02.

Again, I say this in the nicest and friendliest way possible. I love all my BOTL. Muah haha

Does everyone here actually think those prices are decent? Or did I just pick a bad week to give up sniffing glue?

I am glad I am not the only one who thinks this. I felt those prices were high as well. But I did not want to say anything.
In fact, I am hoping he sells them all soon so I will
not be tempted to buy a pack. Honestly, I never had one, but $15 and up a stick, eh, I will wait for a better opportunity.

Stepthirteen, this should answer some questions.

Gouging is not accepted my individuals or retailers.

Now, let the 'is this gouging' discussion begin.

edit - the above link is to only show that this is not a get rich quick site. Thanks Rod!

;)

The no gouging rule applies to both the members and retailers. Retailers gain quite a bit by posting at CP; look at the amount of traffic we receive every day. Look at how many views the threads in this forum receive. Generally, retailers who post specials here do that just that, post specials.

Have a look at this thread: http://www.cigarpass.com/forums/index.php?...=17320&st=0

This has been a long time rule of CP - no gouging, no matter who you are. I understand some people are not Fuente dealers, however please don't pass the burden onto the membership. Everything should be posted at fair MSRP or below. We're not a bank, we don't do investments, this is not a collectors forum.

I am not saying this is outrageous, just a little high. I'm also not questioning or saying that Silo Cigars is not reputable. However, there are several unknowns here, like...

1. How do you really know these are 3 + years old? Because some guy marked baggies saying they were?
2. How do you know how these were stored for that time if they're that old? Did they sit out for two years, and then get placed in a humidor for the last year?

Those are enough for me to not justify the 50% plus markup.

Either way, this is a matter of individual decisions. Could be good deals for some, not so good for others. However, this is a community where people look out for each other and point out discrepancies.

All in all, sounds like Silo made a nice score and is doing what he thinks is right, so I'll give that to him. Being a community board though, we do chime in with our opinions.

I've gotten nothing but great deals, service and brotherhood from Kevin and the crew at Silo. Kevin, Paul and his awesome customers sent over 150 great cigars to me so that I can pass them out to fellow Soldiers in Afghanistan. We're talking Tats, 100 Anos, AF, etc. Good cigars. He's made many a Soldier, Airman, Shipmate and Marine happy with the free smokes to enjoy. Alas, the only Polish guy I deal with doesn't smoke, otherwise this would be an International affair. Plus he always throws in a few extra for me to pass out when I place an order with him. Nothing but class from him and his crew, in my opinion. I will be going well out of my way on some road trip when I return to the States to smoke a fine cigar with these two gentlemen.

Yes, the cigars are expensive. I think someone mentioned that. I have no doubt that Kevin is offering the best deal he can both as a retailer and as a Brother of the Leaf. Kevin, maybe you can provide some specific details to Rod (behind the scenes "not to be disclosed") so this can be written off as gouging or not?

I prefer more bang for my buck, personnally, but everyone is free to spend their allowance however they want. :)

Thanks for offering these up, Kevin.

Hmm I guessing that 91.245% percent of members and retailers won't fit into this category

Everyplace I've ever seen Opus for sale (other than CP) MSRP is not the "going rate". They are always more. Market is what people will pay. If you don't like the price don't buy it.

I enjoy Opus, but they are sure not worth all this hassle. Lots of other great smokes that can be easily obtained.
