Soft Cell had a solid career in their 1980s dance club genre. Those guys were SERIOUSLY bizarre so they did not get as much mainstream radio play as they did in clubs. Soft Cell and its main guy, Marc Almond, have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. The same kind of thing can be said for lots of supposed one hit wonders that had 'underground' hits that were not directed at the Billboard Top 100. I can rattle off four Soft Cell songs that were 'hits' in their genre. While I distinctly wish that Soft Cell was not a part of my "musical memory catalog", they are in there because I was often in places where they, and bands like them, were being played.

In theory bands like James would be considered to be one hit wonders since 'Laid' is the only song that most people know and that made it in to the Billboard Top 100. But James had a very strong career with songs like Sit Down and Born of Frustration to just name a few. Hell, did the Smiths, one of the truly great 'alternative' bands, ever have a song make it in the Billboard Top 100? Are the Smiths "No Hit Wonders"?

That the American music industry was so enamored with Michael Jackson, Vanilla Ice, Paula Abdul and other such mindless drivel shouldn't cloud the fact that our American radios missed the careers of a great number of very talented artists. So, I suppose that a person could consider a band to be a one hit wonder while another person could consider the same band to be amazingly prolific. I see why to many people Soft Cell is considered to be a one hit wonder but there are lots of people who would argue against that classification for them and groups like them. All of that is a long winded and pretentious way of saying that there are many many ways to interpret whether a band was a one hit wonder.

My opinion is you also have to look at the album charts. The Dead only had one top 20 single but at least 5 top 20 albums so they wouldn't be a one hit wonder. I don't think anything under the top 20 can be a "hit" as in all pervasive hear it on the radio far too often kind of song.

Based on the way they charted in the UK I wouldn't call The Smiths no hit wonder but they certainly didn't do anywhere near as well over here.

Soft Cell will always be associated with Tainted Love and for some reason that song can not be played without Dead Or Alive's "you spin me round" as the lead in or follow up. I actually liked Soft Cell's The Art Of Falling Apart

It's no secret, my love for the Smiths. Never got to see them but I have seen Moz on many occasions.
There is a great tribute band http://www.sweetandtenderhooligans.com/ I have seen them at least 10 times

They had another song called, "Toss Up" but I don't remember it getting any airplay so this group is still a 1-hit wonder to me.

I don't have to try to look cool, I am cool. As for the video, I didn't watch it on MTV back then, it was the sound of the beat that got me. They do look a bit corny, but I judge music by how it makes me feel.
