Alright guys, I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I want to ensure that I have all of my P/T's in order to make sure I don't make an ass of myself, and if I do that I have enough time to fix it before the Pass arrives.

T 31 A. Fuente 898 SG // P PAN Principe
T 32 Partagas Short '06 // P Fonseca Cosacos '07
T 36 WOAM // P RP Old World Reserve Maduro Toro

If any of these are not okay please let me know and I'll fix them accordingly.
Without checking prices I would say the the WOAM trade is way off.

Brian

This was the one I was most worried about. According to the Fuente reference guide the WOAM MSRP is 7.35, and from what I pulled off Cigarcyclopedia the RP MSRP is roughly 8.07. I know there is a rarity issue here, but was unsure how much rarity factors into the relative MSRP. If this one is a no go then I can trade it out, I'll just have to go back to the drawing boards. LMK.

I personally do not think there is a rarity increase in value. The price is $7.35 I think as far as the pass goes, that should be standard for that smoke. MHO....

Maybe we should use the resources at hand before we go calling someone out for an "off" trade. ;)

(WOAM really aren't as rare as people seem to think they are. And the OWR is an excellent smoke, even though I don't really care for RP)

I was not calling him out, I was just going off of my experience with passes on CP that have involved WOAM's or Hemi Maddies. I to at one time tried to trade for one and was told that that stick carries some rarity due to the fact that it is not always availiable and can only be purchased at certain times.

Whether Maduro Hemingway's carry any rarity value is a valid question to ask. In my limited three years of experience on this board I would say the rarity factor has decreased as our membership and collective resources have expanded. Sticks still hard to come by in the shops of local retailers for many across the country are now common sight on our buy/sell/trade forum. While I have no issue with the proposed put/takes as the decision ultimately lies with our host, I too have a healthy skepticism for sticks from the RP lineup. Fair or not, when RP is mentioned the first place to my mind is the CBid auction block. While I make no judgment as to quality or value, a good portion of Mr. Patel's lineup seems destined for these type of sales. Of course, the stick in question is not currently available in such a manner nor would it be fair to speculate to the means of its future availability. While I don't believe MSRP or rarity are issues here, I would ask from the entire board; is there another type of intangible value that should be placed on a product coming from a manufacturer such as Fuente vs. that of RP? Would your opinion change if the stick in question was an Anejo 46 (MSRP $7.25)?

What's the MSRP on the Toro?
What's the MSRP on the WOAM?

Which can be had for less?(maybe neither)

-------------------------------

The RP runs between $8-11+(depending on the size). The WOAM start around $9.

Link on RP.

Since MSRP on the Toro is not listed...it's tough to say.

It looks like:
1) You can pick these up for a little less than WOAM.
2) You can get them in more places.

Pardon me for jumping into a pass discussion in which I'm not a part of, but I was asked for advice on this situation from someone. The statement above is so far out of whack it's not funny. The only time you use MSRP on a WOAM is when you're trading it for another HTF, or cigar that is only released a few times a year ( this applies to Hemi's, Opus, etc.). You can't expect to trade a regular production stick that runs $7.35 and make an even swap for a WOAM. There IS rarity involved because it is a limited release cigar that you can't just find in any B&M whenever you want. The rules of the pass state that normal pass rules apply, and one of them is rarity for rarity. Just because we as a group may have a lot of WOAM's in our humi, that doesn't make them less rare. The easiest way to dispute rarity is ask yourself this question..."Is the stick I'm trading for found in my area B&M's whenever I go in? Is the stick I'm putting in just as hard to come across in these B&M's?" Rarity is a difficult beast to tame, but the statement I quoted, is.

There is a difference in the following types of "rarity"

Cigars consistently available for purchase, but limited geographically (IE: Casa Fuentes)
Cigars available for purchase only at certain times of the year from certain shops (IE: RARE Fuentes)
Cigars only released once in a limited production, never to be seen again (IE: Tat Franks)
Cigars only given at special occasions, events, or dinners (IE: Padron Family Reserves, Tat Black Robustos, etc.)

The WOAM follows in the second category. If I want to buy a WOAM from a cigar shop...I have to travel a minimum of 2 hours to said shop, and have to make the trip when I know they are in stock. Now, I have lots of WOAMs in my personal stash...but are they easy for me to get? No way. I can go to the liquor store (which I did yesterday) and pick up anything from RP year round. So, is the trade satisfactory? Well, the host can be the judge of that. But the main question; Should WOAMs have some rarity factor....absolutely.

Nice breakdown!

I'd add "cigars only available from certain retailers, and in limited quantities" (IE: most Opus X)

Tried to find the original post on the 101-4 pass, but couldn't . . . the point was raised in that pass that HTF is a separate qualifier, not a price sway. In other words, if you can't trade NC for CC in a pass, even if they're both $10 sticks, then you can't trade NHTF for HTF on equal price, either.

The question that inevitably comes up is . . . what's HTF, what isn't? I think Jake's post and Jonesy's clear this one up pretty well, but it's still geographically variable on a whole lot of what people call HTF. Some include Padron, which I can get all day long because my local B&M has an account in good standing, I include VSG because that distributor never restocks and nobody seems to sell full boxes online (limited availability = HTF to me), and almost everyone includes Opus X, but if I lived in Austin or most of the NE US I could buy those all day, every day.

And this is why I wanted to throw my T/P's in the ring way before it got to me. Seeing as this is my first pass I was unsure how much rarity plays into a cigars relative MSRP so this has been a good learning experience for me, and I will avoid proposing T/P's like these in the future. I understand (hope) that no one was trying to "call me out", and greatly appreciate the advice I've gotten about the situation. I also hope I did not offend anyone with the proposed T/P, and that no one thinks I was trying to pull one over on anyone. For the time being I'll just remove that from the proposed list all together.

So the list as of now is as follows:

Not nitpicking but is this an AF 858 SG that has rarity as well? I know the Principe has a higher MSRP, but enough to make up for the rarity? Do we allow money to make up for rarity in passes. I'm new to this and just trying to learn.

That's all well and good, but then you've obviously missed out on the whole "rarity" issue....which is why I explained it how I did. When you're not sure how the rarity factor works (obviously by your statement), then why offer up your opinion?

Mike, I apologize for the above post. I was way out of line with what I said. I guess I just took your post to have a different tone than what you had meant and responded.

In my passes, to a degree, I allow it. Simply because in the spirit of CP, I want others to be able to try cigars that they are not otherwise capable of trying. It's on a case by case basis....will a CAO/ Greycliff/ Gurkha be able to make up for a cigar based on MSRP? Most likely not... but, as I said in most other cases....within reason, I will allow it.....but, this isn't my pass.

In my opinion it depends on the pass. When you have a pass with members that have quite a collection of rarities then Rare for Rare works. But in others where there are people that have not as many the MSRP can make up the difference.
