Yeah, it can be difficult to explain to some people why certain things make us happy. I mean, we have a 3 hour training pretty much once a week, an 24 to 36 hours a week of crew shifts on top of our full time careers. It gets to be a pretty big commitment to training for situations that rarely happen these days, but maybe once a year (if you’re lucky) you get a big burner like this and you can see the glow from miles away and it makes it worth all the time. That sucks to hear about the pigs/farmer. I understand the "happy" part of it, though. I have a good friend who is an aeromed helicopter pilot. He is always posting about how great of a day he had flying, meanwhile I'm thinking, "It wasn't such a great day for the dude in the back...". I mean, every time he takes off, it means that someone is probably having the worst day of their life. On the other hand, he's gaining incredible flying experience and providing a (literally) life-saving service and chance for those who require the airlift. Hell of a dichotomy to try and wrap your head around...
I will say, when a life is lost. It’s obviously not fun anymore, we’re not that bad of people. But to me, 1200 pigs dying is just a number because I work in the agricultural/livestock industry. It’s not uncommon to lose half of that number in a week to illness if something is spreading in a barn.
PS: Your friend has an amazing job, flight medics/nurses are the best in the business when it comes to critical care transport
