3 of the 4 goals this weekend were scored by Fontaine. Power Play went 3 for 16 and Stalock couldn't stop a basketball on Friday night. I'm not looking forward to the rest of this year. :(

I did watch some of the Gophers-Bucky game on Saturday. Lucia has their team looking really good at this early part of the season. They will be more of a force this year than the last couple I think (as much as it pains me to say it :p ).

Edited to add: Sandelin's contract ends after next season. Just wanted to get the fact out there since we were discussing it.

If anybody has or knows of an extra goaltender out there, please contact:

Thanks!

When does the new arena open?

They broke ground on the parking ramp this fall. Groundbreaking on the actual arena is next spring (April) if all goes as planned. They're saying the arena will be open for business Dec. 31, 2010 if all goes well.

I don't know how the hell they're going to deal with hockey during that time. There's usually the nice break around Christmas/New Years, but it would be logistically difficult to have the first half of the season in the old arena and half in the new.

It looks really nice in the sketches and renderings. I've always thought it was a waste of money and resources for an area with much greater needs (roads, econ. development, schools, etc.), but I'll enjoy it once it opens.

I'm guessing it's going to take 15-20 games for the boys to get used to the new rules and staying out of the sin bin. I like the idea of calling the game close and freeing up the talent on the ice, but I sure do hate watching these games with half of each game played shorthanded.

That being said, the Gophers take 3 out of 4 points against Minn St this weekend. Another great goalie dual on Friday led to the teams fourth consecutive overtime game. Last Spring's playoff series was an absolute classic, and the Friday game played as well. Gophers rolled on the powerplay Saturday for the difference.

Looks like it's going to be a long year for SCSU.

UMD gets a win against SCSU and lit the lamp five times!

NoDak gets a split against Wisconsin, as Becky Badger gets her first victory.

I must say I was SHOCKED at the offensive production and power play performance this past weekend. This team may come around after all.

I HATE having the extra ref out there on the ice. It slows the game down way too much.

We'll find out tonight how good Minnesota is, they're taking on #6 ranked New Hampshire. I do have to admit my WCHA bias, as I don't think most of the colleges in the country, CCHA, Hockey East, etc. would have the success that they do, if they played in the WCHA. Guess we'll find out tonight if that is true as well.

If they keep calling games the way they have been I think any good team could come into the WCHA from at least Hockey East and the CCHA and do well. What always set the WCHA apart in my eyes was the more physical play and the toughness of the players. Not that those other conferences don't have tough players, but they have played a different style of hockey in the past.

From what I've seen so far this year, WCHA hockey is changing.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm interested in seeing which UMD team shows up against Denver. I hope they can at least get a split. It's still very early, but the season moves quicker every year. Every point certainly counts.

Ok been reading but not posting on this subject yet, but tonight I got to see a game worth a comment or two. U of Minn(4) played UNH(5) tonight at Minn. Off. for these two teams are alot alike with def. taking gambles, and getting involved alot more then you would expect. There was 76 or so shots on goal, and only great play by both goalies kept this a fairly low scoring game for all the shots taken. Game ended in a 2-2 tie, but no one who watched this game would leave would say they weren't entertained-.

One other note from the game was only 6 penalties were called throughout the whole affair. The way I have seen ref. calling UofM games to this point this year I would have sworn Refs. were getting paid by the penalty. Since I am stuck in Minn and our Pro team is coached by a def-minded Cunuck watching the Gophers free wheelin style this year has been a nice change of pace, and actually having refs allow the game to play on only made that much sweeter.

These two teams play again Sat nite so if you get a chance to watch this game I am guessing it should be fun.

Heya, Joe! :)

UMD got the beating they deserved last night. 0-fer on the PP isn't going to cut it against top tier teams. The goaltending hasn't been stellar thus far, either.

I'd go to the Gopher games (in opposition apparel, of course ;) ) if I lived down there, but I can't watch more than about 5 minutes of Woog on TV. I know he's supposed to be a homer, but he can almost NEVER say anything good about the opposition and he goes on and on about how no other team in the nation can even compare with the Gophers. It's especially bad when they play UMD. I got a big laugh a couple of years ago when at the beginning of the Friday game he was talking about how much better the Gophers were and that there would be very little the Bulldogs could do to stop them since their first line would likely be the 3rd or 4th line for MN. He wasn't talking much after the Bulldog sweep was completed Saturday night.

I wish UMD were on TV up here for those of us that don't have cable. They signed a deal with Charter and the games that are on are only available on cable. They used to be on local channel 10. We have one of the highest number of over the air antenna users in th ecountry up here, why they would make the games available only to cable subscribers is beyond me.

It's all about the money. Charter has to be expecting that when UMD does well, more customers will want their cable package.

Yesterday's Minnesota vs. UNH game was a treat to watch, after the penalty filled previous three weekends. I didn't think the Gophers would get a victory after hitting two posts in the first seven minutes of the game. I'm sure we'll see a line up change or two tonight, Sacchetti was pretty much invisible tonight and Jake Hanson was just OK, although he wasn't on the ice much. I'm looking forward to the game tonight.

INCH will probably have the Gophers rated #1 this week. I'm guessing it will be BU #1 with Minnesota #2 at USCHO this week.

UNH played tough for 5 periods this weekend but the 6th period showed how dangerous the Gophers can be this year.

I'm looking forward to the Denver series in a couple of weeks. Should be driving back to MN that weekend, so a catching a game there might be a possibility.

Hey Gregor if you are thinking of coming back to the cities in a couple of weeks, and you get the time to come back a day early or so there is a group of us who meet every Thur nite here in Mlps/Stp, and the invitation to join us all for a good cigar or two certianly is there for you. Just let me or crluap know and we will get you more details on where we will be....more than likely it will be at either the Mlps Golden Leaf or the newer Stp one down by the Xcel.

Bastage as you know that invite is always out there for you .....you can wear any jersey you want my friend, and I promise ya no Doug Woag.

Well, Denver, CC, and #1 BU all get beat last night. A good win for SCSU and for Minn. St.

Add NoDak, Michigan and Michigan St to the loss column. Turned on the NHL channel just as Alaska Anchoage made it 3-0 against NoDak.

UMD gets a tie against 'sconi.

Gophs play this morning(out here anyway) and should take two against Michigan Tech, although MT always plays U of M tough.

The Sioux are struggling this season no doubt.

One of the uglier performances I have seen out of them last night in a long long time.

That was some game last night between UMD and Bucky. Every time either team scored, the other answered. I hope tonight's game (which I will be attending) is just as good.

UMD is surprising a lot of folks up here. The young guys are playing well right now. It's a long season, though.

I watched what has to be the worst hockey game I've ever seen last night. UMD was absolutely horrible and Wisconsin didn't look a whole lot better (even though they were a whole lot better last night). I guess the hallmark of a young team is inconsistency. They certainly are that and a whole lot more.

The Gophers are strangely consistant. the past 3-4 weeks, they have tied the first game of the series and won the second. Happened again with MTU. The coach of MTU has his boys playing well, Kangas was a stud yesterday in getting that shutout. I think that MTU will pull off a number of wins this year against better teams in the league, unless they start getting down on themselves.

As far as inconsistancy, it's hard to remember that some of these kids are just out of high school, isn't it?
