Blind Cigar Reviews

Gather around boys and girls... Here is my "highly anticipated" review! ;)

First of all I want to say thank you to Justin for the chance to try Blind Review out, and for the amazing smokes that he sent me!!! You are top notch bro!!!

The stick was 5 1/2 x 50. It had a beautiful maduro wrapper that had a nice firm feel to it.

It had a wonderful aroma pre-light.
Cut it with my trusty Xikar, toasted the foot, and then lit. The first couple of puffs were just a tad 'harsh' and the draw was a little bit tighter than I prefer.
After about a inch or so, the draw opened up quite a bit, with no more harshness. The main flavor that I was able to identify throughout this stick was cocoa. A flavor I like a lot!!!

So, right about the time this smoke was getting really good... CRACK! WTF!?! I'm not sure what caused this? I let it rest in the cooler for 2 days, at 67deg. and 62%... I was a little worried, but I smoke through it. I'm not sure if it affected my tastes at all, I couldn't tell.

BlindCigarReview005.jpg

I made it past the crack, and now it was really becoming very enjoyable! The cocoa still present, with some hints of cedar possibly...?

BlindCigarReview009.jpg

I get down to the last third, and again... CRACK!!! WTF!?! About the same time, there is quite a bit of spicy "harshness" starting to become present.

Now, throughout this whole process, I'm thinking this is something that I HAVE smoked in the past! The look, the profile, all of it seemed very familiar to me... But I can't put a brand with it...

NICE! Rocky Patel Vinatage 1992 Robusto!!!
Now, after just doing the Flor De Baloney challenge that SJM ran... The RP is the better cigar... BY A LONG SHOT!!!

One thing that I did realize... I really enjoyed smoking something 100% blind!!! It really does take away all the preconcieved notions that you may have about a certain smoke!!! THIS WAS A BLAST!!!

Thanks again smellysell!!!

Sorry about the cracking, that sucks!!! Nice review though, and glad you enjoyed it.

Fine review and great photos as usual. Have to say I haven't loved the 1992 line. I have a box of torps resting and I am hoping a year or two will change my mind.

OK... I'm up.

Got the package from David, and the mystery stick was beautiful. Medium brown wrapper, oily, with a well made triple cap, robusto size... 5x50(ish). First impression was this is definitely a well made cigar, and I could not wait to smoke it.

Well, luck was on my side with the little bit of snow we got yesterday. My boss has been dying for an excuse to call a snow day, and there it was. But, there was not enough snow to close my son's daycare. So, off to the B&M I go!

They're in the middle of remodeling it, but there was space cleared in tha back to sit. Pulled the stick out, clipped it with my trusty Xi3, and took flame to foot. Very easy light, got it going right away, with a lot of smoke. Good initial flavor... just a slight hint of cocoa, but mostly good, old fashioned tobacco.

I had a little bit of burn problems in the beginning, but nothing awful. Touched it up, and kept going. It was around this point that the cocoa started to fade. But there was still plenty of tobacco flavor. A nice, strong smoke. Not knock you on your ass strong, but definitely what I was looking for on a snowy day.

The burn started to even off, but the ash was a mess. Still holding onto the cigar strong, but little pieces all over the place. I didn't want to risk it falling on the newly refinished hardwood floor, so I ashed it. And the cigar kept going strong. I was beginning to pick up a little white pepper taste. This flavor would subtley build throughout the rest of the smoke. Never over-powering, just always there.

It was around this time an older gentlemen walked in and grabbed a seat next to me. He lit up his cigar, and started some small talk. He had a thick Spanish accent, so I asked him where he was from. Cuba. ANd he told me how he waited six months watching the tide and the patrols for his chance to escape over 30 years ago. And how, when picked up on the coast of FL, he immediatley signed up for the armed services in exchange for his citizenship. Great stories to go along with a great cigar.

The whole time I'm looking for subtle flavors and nuances and whatnot, and I just keep coming back to the same thing over and over: A good, strong tobacco flavor. Somthing I haven't had all that often, and I think sometimes becomes forgotten about. Last pic:

It was about this time here my son's daycare called to tell me they were closing early. So I took this pic, grabbed my coat, and headed out to get on with my day and finish my smoke.

I REALLY enjoyed this cigar. Every last puff on it. I could not wait to get home to open the envelope and see what it was. Early on, I was thinking maybe Opus, from the beautiful wrapper and cap and the burn issues early on. But the flavor was nothing like one that I've had, and, although I'm not proficient in Opus-ese, I didn't remember seeing one this particular size.

SO I come home, and lo and behold, I can't find the envelope with the wrapper. And being Valentine's Day, I need to start doing what needs to be done before the wife comes home. So... today I search everywhere, and finally find the envelope...

El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme 5x48
And David, I defintely enjoyed it, thanks!

I have one of those from '98 in my humi waiting to be smoked thanks to a fine botl here. I'm gonna have a harder time waiting for a special occasion after that review I think. Well done.

Great review Tom!!!
I've only smoked one of those... But it was damn good IMO!

I'm glad you got to enjoy it as well bro!!!
It's been a blast doing this!!!

Thanks again!

Nice review Tom! You gotta love snow days.

Nice review Tom, and pretty cool you got to smoke with that gentleman!

I was gifted one of these at a herf, and fell in love with them, and their NC counterpart.

Very nice review. The ERdM CS is a classic smoke. Though not always considered among the ranks of Cuba's finest, it is one that every Habanophile should experience. It's a benchmark not of excess, but of the good solid core of Cuban cigar craft.

Well done, Tom.

Wilkey

That was a great read, Tom. Makes me wish I could have been there with you. Well done!

I received the Blind PIF package from Jeff1101 about three weeks ago and have been waiting for some decent weekend weather to torch it up. Well, yesterday was about as nice as it gets here in February. Sunny and a warm 58 degrees!

So, after a few hours of shopping with the wife, I rushed home to smoke. I pulled the mystery stick from the humi, fixed a tall iced chai tea, and then sat down on the back deck to get down to “work”.

Pre-Light:

This cigar measured 6 x 52 (est.) and had a medium brown, almost rosado color. Single cap, intermediate veining, tightly packed with little yield when pinched between thumb and forefinger. Overall, the construction of this cigar seemed good. The pre-light smell of the stick was very subdued.

I wet the mouth of the cigar in preparation for punching – there was no sweetness and just a minor bit of spice. My initial, post-punch draw revealed a slightly tight draw, but still clearly on the acceptable side.

I lit the cigar and took a few initial puffs. The initial taste reminded me of the Puros Indios Aged Pyramide. There were hints of nut, and a woodiness that was not unpleasant. The cigar had ample smoke coming from both the foot and the mouth.

The ash was a medium gray and fell off on its own just past the inch-and-a-half mark. The burn was not completely even but no touch ups were needed, either.

I shared this experience with my new puppy, Cheech.

Cheech is a three month old Chihuahua who’s just getting his initial experiences with the great out doors due to the weather finally being nice. He made an escape attempt about halfway through the cigar and squeezed himself through a gap in our fence. I had to chase him to the front yard and on the way back around the house I found this laying in the gravel pathway:

Me thinks I need to speak with my 15 year old son!

Anyway, back to the review at hand…

The taste remained pretty consistent throughout the entire stick. The same woody, nutty flavor persisted with an occasional hint of creaminess. There was no harshness, but also little complexity. The flavor profile was in the medium range.

Here we are at just over the halfway mark:

I finished up the cigar and pulled out the envelope with the band. I was anxious to see what I had just smoked. And the reveal…

Overall, my impression was not overly negative nor positive. It was a decent stick, but nothing special. I wouldn’t go out and buy a box but I wouldn’t hesitate to smoke another, either.

Thanks, Jeff, for the opportunity to do this review!

Great review Hawk! These sticks are decent but the few I have had underwhelmed me quite a bit. Congrats on the new pup and be sure to review the other plant you found when you try it.
