World Cup 2006

for you Futbol fanatics, can someone tell me why players seem to be "hurt" when they get the slightest love tap? One guy gets pushed, he falls and a foul is called, he then acts hurt, walks off the field for ten seconds and then sprints back on. Is there a strategy I don't know about in this?

Because they don't wear 30lbs. of padding.

Come on, these guys act like the biggest pusses at times. Don't get me wrong, I think they're some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. However, as far as toughness goes, if they stub a toe they let everyone in the stadium think that they just broke their leg as they get carried off the field on a stretcher.

OK, I know they play a lot of minutes, and I will agree they are some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. Many sports don't wear padding and are also very physical. Every time someone falls over, they don't bring a stretcher out. I was watching a match the other day 2 minutes into the game 3 stops had happened from a player getting pushed over and grabbing their shin in pain. Only to walk off, and be back in ten seconds. I love watching the World Cup so it's not like I'm saying "soccer/futbol" sucks I'm just wondering, why always with the stretcher? Why leave the field if your gonna come back ten seconds later?

FIFA introduced the stretcher law in 1998 (I think). Regardless
of the injury, the stretcher must go out and carry the player off
the field so as not to hold up the game. They figure 4 guys running
on and off with a stretcher is faster than a player limping off.

I think the US choked. The stress got to them. I expect a diffrent team when they play the Azzurri. They won't beat them, but Italy won't have a cake walk either.

Doc.
You can say that again.

Missed the game cause I was at a wedding. Sounds like it was a physical affair with 3 guys being sent off. Italy now needs a tie in their final match to get through.

It was only physical because the Italians kept falling down. Di Rossi finally got frustrated because the Americans wouldn't fall down so he decided that an elbow would do it. Sure enough, McBride went down, the stretcher came out, he went to the sidelines, got 3 stitches, then came back on to frustrate the Azurris for 45 minutes with 9 men. Great match. Now, hopefully the Italians will beat the Czechs and US beat Ghana. :D

That would be sweet! I wish both games weren't at the same time. :(

They make them at the same time on purpose so the teams won't know the outcome of the other group games. If for example, the U.S. and Ghana tie, then Italy and Czech would know they would only need to tie to get through, and they wouldn't play for the win. This way with both games at the same time you don't get that "unwritten agreement" that both teams will tie so they move on to the next round. FIFA tries to get the teams to play for the win since they won't know the outcome of the other match ahead of time.

I am very impressed with the GAME the US played vs Italy.

They dominated the clock and pressured Italy.

It sucks that the refs were so anti-american with some of their bonehead calls. Let them play!!

Ill take luck any day of ther week.

NOW time to prove you are worthy to be in the world cup!! US over Ghana!!

Some great futbol was played this weekend! Argentina's domination was unreal! Brazil..well what can you say !

Getting down to the nitty gritty now. Groups will be decided in the next few days with simultanious games being played each day. Today Group B is to be decided and Group A finishes out their games with a battle for first between Germany and Ecuador.

Wow another dominate performance from Germany!

This week has some of the best mathups in the preliiminary rounds.

Another exciting day!
Yo Alex,

You starting the juice a little early today or just trying to get a rise out of CC?

Just effin' with you, bud. I agree, Germany looked damn strong the last couple of games. Them, the Spaniards, and the Argentines look the best in the tournament so far. Still waiting for Brazil and England to wake up. England vs. Sweden match will be a dandy. Both will be fighting to advance as group leaders so that they don't have to meet up with Germany in the next round. Oh yeah, and Rooney will be starting.

Italy leads the tournament in vicious flying elbows to the head!

A good friend of mine is currently on an internation assignment in Rome and he said that the day after the match, all he heard was about how physical, violent and thug-like the Americans were. Of course, no one mentioned the flying elbow.

That's not true. He was chastised in the Italian press and they have made calls for the coach to drop him from the team for letting the team down with such selfish play.

I would say that England played with a little more urgency this game. I know it is not their best match and that should come in the Knockout Stage.

A draw with Sweden is not a poor outing.

I hope that Owen is fine.

Rooney's outing was to be expected. Once he sat he was livid. I hope that translates to the next match.

I do not think the referee was anti-US. He is just a huge idiot. The match he refereed before the US match was also poorly done.

He will not be back in four years and surly not in the late part of the Knockout Stage.

Currently - minute 29 : USA 0 Ghana 1

Ghana scored in the 22nd minute.

Italy also scored against the Czech Republic about the same time.
