When did DPG become so popular?

DPG, along with Gurkha, is another brand that was just starting off as I left the cigar scene. I did a search on these cigars in an attempt to obtain a history of sorts from 2000 till now but all I've found is praise!

So would someone mind giving me a heads up on the brand? How its done as of late, construction quality, when did it "blow up" on the scene, etc. I'd greatly appreciate any past history or info in general! Thanks!!

I personally am not a big fan of the flavor but the construction is flawless.

Is the flavor reminiscent of Tatuaje?

Furthermore, is there any truth to the Cohiba Maduro rumor I heard regarding DPG's wrapper?

Sorry, I am not accomplished enough to answer that. I can say the DPG Black is so strong that I can not smoke it........period. The DPG blue is a great smoke but I have to smoke it outdoors because, again, it is too strong for me to smoke in tight spaces. But I am a lightweight by comparison to most of the accomplished BOTL's here.

The recent Cigar Aficionado had a really good story on Don Pepin. They posted it up to the website last week.

It was really the word of mouth about Tatuaje that made Pepin big. It got around, people liked it, started raving about it to their friends (and on forums), and Don Pepin just blew up from there...and immediately any cigar with his name on was almost an instant success.

You'll have to get someone else to tell you the Gurkha story. I've never had one that I really cared for.

Dan, I might get a little bit of this information correct, so I hope a FOG helps me out if I stumble, but here goes....

I believe that DPG got big around 2003, he works out of a shop in Miami, FL called El Rey de los habanos. Tatuajes are manufactured and blended by Pepin, so they are definitely similar to the Don Pepin Garcia's Blue, Black, and JJ lines, each one obvoiusly different, but all are somewhat spicy, which seems to be DPG's signature flavor. All of DPG's lines have incredible construction and in my opinion are fantastic smokes.

I have yet to have one of his JJ's, but I really enjoy the DPG Blacks the best, although most people would argue that his Blue line is better.

He's extremely hot right now playing a roll in many different lines for many different companies, a few off the top of my head: Old Henrys, Holts Connoisseur, Padilla Miami, San Cristobal

I'm a Pepin whore myself and I haven't come across a DPG or Tat I didn't like. If you're not so sure about the Pepins you come across, feel free to send them to me for quality control.... ;) :sign:

Took the words right out of my mouth. Although I like some of his cigars more than others, I can honestly say that I haven't had one Pepin cigar that I didn't like.

The smokes he makes for Padilla are off the f'n chain!

That makes me think..........did the Padilla 8&11 Miami predate Tatuaje?

It's funny you would ask that. I was just wondering the same thing. I have a few 8/11's laying around, but I haven't tried them yet. I keep taking them with me to herfs, but I never get around to smoking them.

He has risen in popularity quite quickly. I remember watching the Amazing Race I think 2 years ago and they went to his shop in Florida, I had no idea who he was back then...then upon seeing a repeat of this show recently I was like "HEY IT'S PEPIN!!!!"

The combination of great blending and craftsmanship combine to make his blends hard to beat. I like the Padilla 8&11, 1932, and 1968, and the 601 Green and Red the best. Of his own blends: they are good and I like them but, ironically, they are not my favorites.

The Tats are wonderful but not a great value at their price point, IMO. I haven't tried the thirty or so other blends he's done for others but many come highly recommended.

SMOKE THEM! They're awesome!

Don Pepin was in houston a couple months ago at Serious with one of his master rollers, I attended the event and my friend even got a free box of the Cuban Classics. After passing these "black beauties" around, Don Pepin became a favorite. His blue label stuff isn't bad either

Here's a question......when did DPG Blue Label start using cellophane?

I just got a box each of Invictos and Imperiales and they're both cello wrapped....dated July 2007, but every other box I've ever seen in B&Ms is naked.

I agree, Pete ( Tatuaje ) put Pepin on the map

I was told that he decided to start using cello because the wrappers are fragile and they were having problems with shipping damage.
