When did DPG become so popular?

I guess i'm one of the few who's not impressed.

When I first started smoking all I wanted was Fuente products because of what I kept hearing on this site and many others. After having a bunch from both Fuente and DPG I realized that some of my desire for AF products was the mystique behind the cigar, not the cigar itself. I prefer a cigar that I can go into most shops and pick up any day of the year and not having to wait for two frickin holidays. My cigars of choice are available any time I want them and I don't have to stockpile and wait for next year. Plus the taste and construction of DPG blows AF out of the water. But, then again, taste is so subjective...

The way I see it, the high-end Fuentes (Anejos and Opus) and high-end Pepin products (Padilla Miami, Tatuaje), are along the same lines in quality and desirability, and are just vastly different in taste profiles. An Anejo #77 Shark can't take the place of a Padilla Miami Lancero, and vice versa.

Now for the mid-ranged cigars, a DPG Blue beats out an AF 858 any day.

But is it really worth waiting for Father's Day and Christmas for ONE line of cigars when you can get any line of DPG whenever you want. I believe a huge part of my desire for a cigar is knowing that I can't have it. Once I got over the fact that it was just another cigar and there are 5000 more that are just as comparable in complexity and flavor I found that I grew to like DPG more and more. I think Fuente is losing a huge chunk of their business because of the long wait times and quality issues i.e. Anejo mold. I'm in no way saying that Anejos are not good because they are. I just question Fuente's marketing strategies and releasing techniques.

...exactly.

Don't get me wrong; I have opies and Anejo's in my humidor, and when they are available at retail, I'll buy them. But, there are a greater number of Pepin products in there, too. Tat's are yummy; Don Pepin Blue's are quickly becoming my "go to" stick many weeknights. The whole "chase the Fuente" hassle is frustrating, to be sure.

Pepin and Fuente are of course both fine cigars, but the availability of the fine Pepin products make them a more desirable smoke, to me, in many ways.

Regards - B.B.S.

You make a good point

Don Pepin was in houston a couple months ago at Serious with one of his master rollers, I attended the event and my friend even got a free box of the Cuban Classics. After passing these "black beauties" around, Don Pepin became a favorite. His blue label stuff isn't bad either

Here's a question......when did DPG Blue Label start using cellophane?

I just got a box each of Invictos and Imperiales and they're both cello wrapped....dated July 2007, but every other box I've ever seen in B&Ms is naked.

I was told that he decided to start using cello because the wrappers are fragile and they were having problems with shipping damage.

D

I'm glad...even though I think they're awfully pretty nekkid...getting a single stick of any Pepin-made smoke usually turns into a game of "Find the Cigar That's Been the Least F*cked Up by Other B&M Customers Manhandling It"

I learned my lesson after a few times of getting home to find my Tat had a big crack near the foot or a nice little half-moon slice in the wrapper midway up the cigar from some other dude's fingernails.

Send me your nasty opus and anejo, i'll send you back some DPG / Tat :p

DPG products are not bad, i smoke one every now and then, but i've had numerous construction issues, and just flat out like the taste of the Opus / anejo / high end fuentes much better, and i don't mind the chase, do me it's kinda fun, sometimes.

Well, as big a DPG fan as I am, I haven't found one that can take on an Anejo in a head to head match.....for me.

But I can list at least 10 DPG cigars that I'd pick out of a B&M before any Opus at retail. I agree, with B.B.S and lurch, if Fuente wants to make it so hard to get ahold of his premium stuff....then fine....I don't need it. I understand what he is doing....don't flood the market with his premium blends so that they stay "sought after" and of "high reputation". Obviously it works to his favor or he wouldn't do it. But that's why I'm thankful for DPG's (to include Tats, Padilla, Cabiguans, etc.).

Enlightenment comes slow, but comes none the less. When the Cuban embargo ends what you bet rare Fuentes become common Fuentes.

Doc.

So maybe Doc you'll be enlightened soon? Better hurry up though

When you put in the effort to build your stock of Opus / Anejo, then they become not so rare, and for the $8-12 range, you can't beat 'em, IMO, especially w/ a year or so on them, and i only smoke 2-3 times a week, so it's not expensive.

I guess i've just had bad luck w/ DPG products, i've had numerous tight draws and tunnels / hollow spots, but it sounds like that's pretty rare from what you DPG sluts are saying. I've had one tight draw Opus, very rarely burn issues other than the occasional wrapper burning uneven, but that's prolly some type of humidity issue.

I wish i did dig the DPG products more, lots to choose from. I do like LFD, so sounds like the Dominican grown products are more my speed.

Fuente/DPG.......Ford/Chevy......Almost like a Nascar thread :D

Thank goodness there's so many offerings and flavor profiles. For example, finally had an Ashton VSG last night. Was it good? Yes. Are there other brands out there I like a lot more based on my favorite tastes? Hell yes!

Personally, I love the DPG's minus the JJ Maduro. But you can't go wrong with Fuentes either.

Gator,

What is your storage humidity at?

Have you tried dry-boxing Pepin-blended cigars before smoking?

I found that after a handful of 'off' stick when I first started down the Tatuaje/DPG road that if I store closer to 60% then I would get a much better burn and a cleaner flavor.

Might be worth trying, especially if you've got some in your cabinet already.

And for the OP:

I think another reason that DPG has become so popular is he seems to listen to his customers. There was a call for a Lancero vitola and we got Al's custom Blue labels followed by the Holiday Lancero Sampler. There were some issues with box-size and shipping damage and he started using cello to mitigate these problems. People said they wanted more blends and now there are 40,000 different DPG blended cigars from like a dozen manufacturers.

Also, you don't have to buy a '22' box to get a DPG stick with a pig-tail cap...

The other thing I like about DPG, besides his cigars, is, he doesn't wear those silly white panama hats and Guayabera shirts, and looks uncomfortable as hell in a jacket and tie.

Doc.

Don Pepin is like a genie! About the time you think, "Man, I wish Don Pepin would do this or that with his cigars" or "I wish Don Pepin would make yada yada,".....he's already done it!

Blue Label Lanceros by the box...

I hope it is only a manner of time, and not that Don P gets the idea to make them a more HTF vitola (He's got Centurion for that).

But hell, even if he only made Blue Lanceros once in a blue moon I'll be happy for the chance to smoke some more of these.
