Why it pays to be nice sometimes.
Being as regular in West Hollywood as the Corps would let me allows you to recognize some people over time. There were a fair amount of folks who knew me visually but had no idea what my name was and vice versa. One of these was the doorman at the Roxy who I would see at his job and once in a while at the Rainbow at 3am eating breakfast after his gig. The Rainbow was physically 6 doors down from the Roxy. Once we were both paying our bill at the same time and he was a few bucks short. I was right behind him and said I would cover it. He said thanks and I replied : "No problem I know where you work." He gave a chuckle and said: Yeah, you do don't you." This was probably early February or March 1980. Two weeks later I see him working the door and said I was going to the Rainbow to eat before the show and did he want me to bring anything back for him. He did and gave me a five to cover it, I get done, drop off his bag and give him his change. Not a word said about the 2 bucks I gave him before. Same thing happens the next night. and a week or two later.
The next time I see him I'd been somewhere else but still end up at the Rainbow at 3am and see him sitting with some people so I wave he nods and I find myself an empty spot to sit. About 15 minutes later he sits next to me and says. We've got The Clash coming in for one show at the end of the month and only half the tickets will be available to the public. I tell him thanks and explain why there is no way I could get there early enough to get in line to buy a ticket. He looks at me and says:"So you're a Marine? I wondered why you looked so freakin' weird. I tell you what, you show up and I'll get you in and we'll call it even."
What you have to understand is the Roxy only holds 500 people. It is about as close as most folks will ever get to a major artist. Even pressed against the back wall tou are closer than any stadium or a lot of areans first row. It is however, SRO so not a place to relax.
Now I had just seen The Clash At the Santa Monica Arena 2 months before but this was different. The sound was better, when talking to the audience you felt like you were involved.
The setlist was significantly different with this having tighter arrangement, more songs and more of the regge/dub influence showing. Anytime you start off with a cover of Booker T & The MG's "Time Is Tight" you can pretty much guarentee a good time.
The audio is the whole show and not the best quality but gives you the idea.
I did buy him breakfast afterward.
