The story Phillips used to tell was he originally wrote "Me and My Uncle" at a drinking session in a hotel room with Judy Collins, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young among others in 1963. The only problem was that Neil was 17 and just started giging around with his band the Squires. Now the Squires did open for the group Stephen Stills was in - the Au Go-Go Singers in late 1963 during their Canadian tour. Judy was living in Connecticut but mostly working in New York and did not tour Canada in 1963. Papa John was living and working in New York with his group The Journeymen until early 1964 but never toured Canada either. So how all of them could have been drinking with Papa John is a mystery unless Neil secretly made his way to NYC, under age and with no passport. Possible but unlikely and Judy says it happened in Arizona anyways but without Stephen whom she says she never met until 1967, or Neil.Maybe it's because she was so cute back then, but I liked Joni Mitchell's version best.

I love these stories. I do know that you didn't need a passport in those days. I only lived about 40mi. from the border and crossing it underage or otherwise was no problem. We did it often. There's tombstones lining Rt. 5 attesting to it. All you needed to buy a drink in Canada was be tall enough to hand the bartender your money. Also remember that the drinking age in NY was only 18 in those days. It would have been no problem for Neil Young to get a drink. But no matter. It's a good story. The story Phillips used to tell was he originally wrote "Me and My Uncle" at a drinking session in a hotel room with Judy Collins, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young among others in 1963.
