My buddy goes the the Dominican Republic twice a year to see his wife that he is trying to get citizenship here for in the US.

This trip back he gave me a cigar he brought back from there. He told me it was some expensive Cuban cigar. I've been trying to find more info about it but have come up dry forsome reason. Now I come to you....

He doesnt have a box for it or anything, just said he got it down there.

It has a red wrap with gold trim, and a picture of a 'farm' on it. It's labelled Montellano under the picture, and the back says Hand Made, on one end, and the other end mostly covers Dominican Republic... all you can see is 'can' on the top and 'blic' on the bottom.

Anyone have any info on this cigar? I've looked around google and not found anything. A search for "Montellano Cigar" comes back with 0 replies.

Thanks.

Pretty sure that's a fake.

The best cubans I've had in the DR have been the one's I brought with me on the plane. :)

I don't think a Cuban cigar would have "Dominican Republic" written on the band. It's probably just a local market Dominican stick.

Wilkey

Quick search of the web makes it sound like Montellano is a village in the DR near Puerto Plata, supporting Wilkey's thought.

looking at it, i can tell you this much, if it matters.

it looks like it was rolled from one single leaf, and it doesnt have a strong smell to it.

I was figuring on some local cigar as well, since there hasnt been any info on it anywhere.

Thanks

May I make a leap here and guess that you aren't (yet) a cigar smoker?

occasionally, but not a conisuar like most people here are. Though I wouldnt mind learning a bit and enjoying them more often. I'm thinking this 'event' may be a step in the right direction.

If this "event" you talk about is stumbling onto CP, the greatest cigar community on the web, then I do agree that you have made a step in the right direction. If you mean this "event" as in the fact that you stumbled onto CP, a place that will surely alter your monthy budget to include "Cigar Related Expenses"... then you might not be so lucky... :whistling:

Head on over to the "introduce yourself" thread and tell us more about you. Pull up a chair, light up that Dominican tobacco and dig in!

Welcome

Think I'll keep it till I find a good evening to crack open my bottle of Strong69 Absinthe. Any recommendaions on storing it without buying a humidor? I have temp/humidity gauges from all my reptile stuff i could use to help.

If I had to guess I'd say it is a private label stick made for a business in Montellano region (near Saville) of Spain but that's just a guess.

Looks like it is even a second, the band looks like it was put on wrong. The overlap was in the wrong order.

Smoke it!

a second?

Basically a cigar that didn't make the "final cut" or inspection... ususally for quality related reasons. I guess the flaws can be very minimal to more obvious. Seconds are usually sold unbanded in "bundles" at a reduced price. They can be great deals too if you know where to shop...

Well your buddy must be going to Sosua then, because that's about the only place in the world you can buy those Montellano cigars. I know the guy who owns the company, I just bought another box of them two weeks ago when i was in Sosua. the owner is a good friend of my good friend Santo. No, they are not Cuban cigars, they are made in Santiago, DR but have the name of the little town where the owner and Santo both live, the town of Monte Llano which is about half way between Sosua and Puerto Plata. i just gave a good friend of mine a box of 25 of those cigars today because he really likes them, I gave him a box of them about 6 months ago and he wanted more. they really aren't too expensive either. my buddy who is a cigar aficianado really likes these Montellanos...i have 5 of them for myself. let me ask you a question, how much would you be willing to pay for one of these Montellano torpedos? or 25 of them? i can probably get as many of them as you want :)

So..... How much does Montellano pay you to troll around the internet trying to shill their cigars?

Man oh man talk about a turn of events. I thought this thread was going in the right direction someone just wanted to learn about cigars and was asking an honest question of an unknown cigar. Now I have little doubt that this was all an marketing ploy. sigh
