To my Brothers in Arms

On Nov. 3 I was discussing the following day's election with a co-worker of mine. She was voting for one candidate and I was voting for the other. As this is a cigar forum and not a political forum I will not go into who was supporting whom. Sufficed to say, we came to the conclusion that, as important as it is to elect the right people for public office, it is the fact that we GET TO elect them that is still the most mind-blowing concept of all. And THAT would not be possible if it weren't for the men and women who have risked or given their lives for this nation. Thank you to those who have served or are currently serving!

I missed this yesterday as I took a few days off to include Veterans Day! I'm just grateful that we do live in this great nation. The sacrifice of the men and women that serve and have served are why we do enjoy what we have in this country.

Thank a veteran when you have a chance. I do every day when I go to Penn Station, there are plenty there in their uniforms protecting me everyday!

I had a conversation the other day that left me shaking my head. After Mr. Obama was elected this person said it was the first time he was proud of his country. I told him he was making enemies with statements like that. He responded with a diatribe about how after the tragedy of 911 all the flag waving was ridiculous and that that energy could have been spent better in other areas. He continued on about how every great American gets assassinated and that doesn't make him proud and that this country is made up of a racist population.
Okay... now read this carefully. He said "What makes this country great" "isn't flag waving; it's about freedom of choice and freedom of speech and belief". He ended with this, "But if you can appreciate my constitutional right to express what my beliefs are and that they are totally different than yours. Well then and only then can you call yourself a True American."

It's true. Every word.

To my fellow veterans, I posted this for you. I hope you all had as fine a day as I did... wrapped in our constitutional rights.

You've written a lot of good stuff over the years, but that, is the most profound thing you've ever written.

Doc.
Thanks Doc. I was angry at first but then he wrapped himself in the American Flag and claimed constitutional privilege. That gave truth to the lie.

A fellow like that called me a baby killer some 30 years ago. Now that I think about it, that one was literally wrapped in the flag.

Funny, I had a woman call me a dirty baby killer about the same number of years ago. I just smiled and told her to be careful as I killed quite a few women over there too, didn't take her long to get the hell away from me!

Unfortunately, people like that don't understand what a privelage it is to serve and ensure that way of life he so covets.

Or a privilege either Tony. When he said there was a "redneckdom" at CP who make racist posts... I knew what I was dealing with.

That's what I get for typing that on the crackberry! Damn I never noticed that my neck was red :(

My father, a living member of the Greatest Generation, served in the Air Force during WWII. Even though his right arm was not fully functional because of a birth problem, he demanded to be allowed to join and serve his country in the cause of Freedom and Democracy. He knew his duty and obligation and did all he could in that great cause. I salute him and those who served with him. I pray every day for our troops who are now fighting the enemies of freedom and democracy. GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

No words can represent the gratitude I have for those serving, and those who have served. Equally, many of us will never fully understand what you have given up or experienced. What connects us, however, is a belief that America and her ideals are worthy of protection -- that liberty, freedom, and equality are more than just words.

A special heart-felt thanks goes out to the men and women from the Greatest Generation who served in WWII. My Great Uncle was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, and even until his death he would not speak of that day -- but every Veterans Day or Memorial Day his tears spoke volumes. May God smile upon you, and may this Nation forever remember your service.

Well said, Darryl. Well said.

I'm a parochial kind of guy. I'll bet you find that surprising. :whistling:

Doc.

No, not that surprising. Since in your youth you were away from for a long time and being away from terra firma and all that. We are after all creatures of habit
