By your definition, Johnny Cash could easily be considered hip hop. Marylin Manson could be considered rap

The rap vs hip hop debate/conversation is so interesting to me because there are so many varying opinions thoughts on it.

My opinion only, definitely far from fact, is that hip hop requires MCs that are actually MCs, i.e. changing rhymes patterns, metaphors, sometimes thought provoking lyrics, etc. Rap by in large is mainstream pop crap.
