Hey y'all. I'm a newbie round here; already done an introduction, and searched for this topic, but have a very specific request for advice from you seasoned guys. I smoke outside, and its getting cooler out here in So Cal. I know a lot of you guys smoke outside during the winter, so how do you stay warm? I'm interested in getting a decent, but smallish space heater for my apartment balcony, so I don't freeze my skinny butt off smoking my cigars. These types of electronics are very hit and miss in term of usability and quality, so is there any you outdoor smokers can recommend to me? Its a small balcony, maybe 12'x6'. The only thing is that it needs to be electric. HELP! Thanks guys...CP rules!

I think you'll find that most, if not all here, don't think southern California gets cold to start with. Not that it gets arctic here in PA but I just put on a jacket and head out the door unless the wind is really blowing and then I go into the garage.

What kind of temperatures do you experience in the winter? That matters as well when sizing a heater.

I just sit in my garage with the space heater and my laptop. It isn't as nice as sitting by the pool but at least I can still enjoy a smoke.

What is cold according to you Southern cal guys, 65 degrees?

Just pick up a small space heater at walmart and you should be fine.

My advice to you bro is to wear a thicker coat or toughen up

Dude,

How cold could it possibly get in Valencia unless you're at 5,000' elevation? Try dressing suitably first of all. If that doesn't work, then, I don't know, I guess a radiant heater of some sort.

In the winter, I smoke in the garage when it's sub-freezing. I wear thermal underwear, sweater, coat, and fingerless gloves. Now that's pretty cold but there are guys that smoke at temps approaching 0 F.

Dave,

Wilkey

I read the header and thought it said Smoking in winter....beating required! lmao!

It gets down in the low 20's here (SC) during some of the cold spots. I put up plastic around my back porch. Rocking chair, small heater, big azz coat and healthy shot of scotch!

In Minnesota: I dress warm, head to the garage, use a space heater, and the kicker... a heating pad. Yep, that draws laughs from the old lady, but it is very effective. I've found that I can still smoke comfortably even when it's in the 30s.

I don't know what kind of temps you're talking, but we're seeing temps approaching freezing here now. My back porch isn't working out so well since it catches the north wind pretty heavily. The way the buildings are constructed it causes the wind my porch sees to be significantly higher than what it is in the open. Bundling up has been sufficient, but the wind has been too much to deal with.

Tonight I decided to fix this. I emptied one of my outdoor storage closets into the other one, and I'm putting a small table and chairs in there this week. I picked up two space heaters (1500 watt ceramic units - $30 at Target), and I hope to give it a try tomorrow and see how well things work out. I don't know that those heaters would do you any good outdoors, but it might be worth a try. Unless you're facing some extreme temps, I'd say you probably aren't dressed appopriately.

....Valencia, California? ........too cold to smoke? You're kidding, right?

It was the low 30's here this AM when I put on my coat and headed outside. Smaller sized smokes in the winter, but I smoke outside pretty much year 'round.

Of course, now that you mention it, we had a young college grad in my department for a while, from AZ. When the temps got in the 50's, I kid you not he wore ski gloves. We picked on him, too.....

When it gets really cold, I've got one of these on my lower, covered deck (high roof).

Bundle up, bud - !! - B.B.S.

I came in from smoking last night at about midnight. I had been sitting on the deck in my chair reading by moonlight while enjoying a DPG Invictos. Before I went out about 10:30 I put on my polar fleece, fingerless gloves, and watch cap. Temperature when I went outside: 15*. Temperature when I came in: 8*. The cigar held up very well given the circumstances. Once it gets to zero and below, that will mean no more cigars for me. That's when the pipes will really get a work out.

You need a heater?

EDITED TO ADD: I just realized I didn't answer the question. I guess I was too busy laughing. Go out and get a Coleman Black Cat portable catalytic heater. They run on the small propane cylinders and work great. They heat up our 12x10 ice house quite nicely on those -25* February nights. If you can't find one locally, they're available online at most camping/outdoors places.

Just came in from a good smoke (Gurka Black Puro). It's 28 tonight but there is no wind and a full moon. So I threw on a hoodie and went for a walk. Life is good!!!!! :D

HAHAHAHA - exactly the responses I expected! With good merit though, some of you guys are seriously hardcore and/or nuts!

I know it isn't "cold" compared to you all up north and in the east, but cold here is still cold to me, I guess its relative to what you're used to. Lets just say I am freakin' spoiled!
But hey, it can get into the 40's here at night, you know?! :whistling:

Forget the heater -Time to bust out the parka and mittens I suppose.

Thanks guys, I got a serious laugh outta your responses. Nothing like some perspective, eh!

@ Kingantz - maybe the header should read that!

I'm right there with you. As a lifelong So Cal resident, I'm shivering when it falls below 65 and burning up when it hits above 85. I'm just used to our complete lack of noticeable weather.

I've looked into this before, and after poring through copious reviews, it appeared to me that butane heaters models are only sporadically effective at best unless hooked up to at least a five gallon tank. My suggestion is that any small cheapie, but well rated, electric space heater should do just fine for your stated needs.

I was quite comfortable this evening as I was smoking a #35 maddie. It was about 33 degrees out, but 102 in the hot tub where I was sitting. My smoking hand gets a little cold, I tough it out though...

I'm in SoCal too - not too far off from Valencia. I think the trouble is we just don't think of dressing for the cold 'cause we're so used to t-shirts and sandals... I find that when I layer up with a good sweatshirt/jacket combo & jeans, 40-50 isn't intolerable for a 1-2hr smoke. I'd suggest you try putting on a few layers of clothes before spending money on a heater... But that's just me.

A $30 heater is $30 you could have spent on some nice smokes ;)

This guy must be pulling our legs or he's taken Flatlander to a new level.

Doc.

I'm planning on buying one of these for my balcony if the one my boss is lending me to try works out well

I went to Irvine CA to visit my uncle in early December years ago. I was walking around in a T shirt, and everyone else had on coats and sweaters, looking at me like I was crazy.
Not trying to get you any sympathy, but I can understand how you can become climatized to your enviorment.

I am assuming that you might not be able to use anything that produces a flame after you said it had to be electric. Here is a link on electric Parabolic Heaters.Linky
Parabolic Heaters reflect radiant heat, and heat objects around it, including you. Unlike forced air space heaters, which might be okay for completely enclosed areas, you will find these better suited for the purpose you have in mind.

Another option if your situation allows it, is a patio heater. This is another radiant heater that utilizes the same propane tank as a gas grill.
I can sit outside comfortably in 35* weather without a jacket, and have approx. a 200 sq foot area heated to about 70*. This is as long as the wind is not blowing more than 10 to 15 mph.
I love my patio heater. You just need to make sure that you can place it at least two feet away from any vinyl siding, and have the same amount of clearance above it. They also make smaller versions that fit on top of a table.
I have taken mine inside the garage while skinning deer, and it works great there too. I just have a T shrt on in that case (just thought you garage smokers might like that).
Here is a link for patio heaters linky. These sites are the first that I found, you might find better prices with a little searching.
I'm feeling lucky that I have the option to smoke inside.
Hope this helps.

Guys, cold is a completely relative term. After a few years of living in Miami, my sister wears a jacket when it hits a chilly 65.
