Remote Start

Does anyone have this on their vehicle?  My wife is wanting this for Christmas and I'm not sure.  Has anyone had it installed after market and how has it done?  I guess I don't mind walking out to the car in the mornings and starting mine, but she is another story.  She is taking this "her car" thing too far, LOL.

Suggestions/Ideas?

Just for your info.

unless a licensed operator is in such vehicle.

This is some really good info.

I have always subscribed to the hardcore addage that extended idling is bad for a car.

Obviously the colder the climate, the more you're willing to sacrifice a little engine durability for convenience and health.

Swissy and those who live up in really cold temps, do you use special 0 weight oils to get the oil into the upper engine as quickly as possible?  How about oil pan heaters or block heaters that plug in?

I am thinking about getting the oil pan heaters.  So much engine damage (anywhere from 70-90%, depending on who you ask and how you drive) occurs on startup.

Just out of curiosity, has it ever been below zero in Maryland?

Not in the past 5 years or so. I reckon not in the past 20, either. So, for all intents and purposes, no.

Call your local police dept and inquire... then call your assemblyman/councilman/mayor and whomever. It could be an old ordinance that can be changed. You can't be the only one that wants/has a remote start!

Mine shuts off after about 10 min. so it really isn't that "extended" of a period.

Free, I can get in and turn my key all the way over and it doesn't grind out at all. I would ask all these questions to the installer of the system though.

I don't see this mentioned, but I don't think they can install remote start on manual transmission vehicles.

In fact, you can! By bypassing the neutral safety switch....just a matter of crossing a wire. The only down side is that you must leave your transmission in neutral and the parking brake on...could suck on steep hills! :0

Ive got one in my Mazda 3...dealer would not install it due to liability issues because its a manual. I ended up doing it myself and only took a few hours...there is a sensor in it that will not start it if its in any gear.

Im old fashiond and always look for the oil pressure gauge to swing over when I start it. Thats tough to do with a remote start.

I know a guy who took his truck in to have the oil changed at the dealer and went to drive home and only got a half mile before it locked up. The mechanic forgot to add oil after he drained it.

I wont comment on the legal aspect - since I personally DONT KNOW.

I will say I'm going to install one in my sons new truck after christmas.... (Yeah I'm gonna do it myself) what I understand, there is a module that goes under the dash which houses a separate key if your vehicle has the key chip.. but I don't think the 05 TB's to... my son has an 2002 Trailblazer (TB) and his does NOT have it.

I had a brand new clifford alarm laying around (long story) so we installed the Clifford alarm (Ace500) in his car right after he got it, and it was pretty painless. TB's have a central computer system that controls basically EVERYTHING, and once you "tap" into that using a DEI (direct electronics) module, the module gives you all (most) of the wires you're gonna need to complete whatever the insatll requires.

I'd listen to Styx and stoned... he used to work for a place that dealt in mobile electronics, so what he says is accurate ;)

As for the unit itself... I was pricing some stuff at Circuit City, and they sell a Code Alarm keyless entry with remote start for $79! And my local Fry's electronics has a Clifford brand keyless entry and remote start for $119.

I can guarantee you for the keyless part, you will need a $30 module to interface with the door locks - we needed one. There is also a seperate module for the remote start, but we havn't gotten to that stage of it yet.... I also believe they (DEI) make a combo module with door lock interface and the remote start interface? (GARY???) I'm not sure on that though.

We (my son and I) are going to install the remote start after christmas... we did the alarm- it only took a couple of hours and we had a blast doing it. I figure it will be the same for the remote start, give or take... I've already got the Clifford Intellistart module, all we need is the DEI module for the remote start interface and an extra key

I had an aftermarket AutoStart installed in my wifes 05 Altima, and she loves it. If your car has the type of key with the chip, they make aftermarket sets that have the spare key installed inside of them to clear this hurdle. I only paid 299 installed, but it does not have all the "bells and whistles" that some models have. Just keep in mind that if the car is manual, you run the risk of autostarting while in gear! :0

I'm sure a garage would cost slightly more than that remote start, however I agree with whoever mentioned that earlier! This way you've got a warm car, no frost and no snow to clear off!

I wish I could get remote starts in our cars, I'd do it in a second! Although the garage is warm, the parking lots around town are not!
