Remote Start

They make a bypass mod for damn near every key chip system out there. The bypass mod will cost about an extra $75 - $100.

IMHO I would say that DEI (Directeted Electronics) makes the best and most reliable unit on the market.

And depending on your make and model and all the other bells and whistels you chose to add on, you can spend anywhere from $399 - $1,000 on a unit.

And yes fellas, the ladies will "LOVE YOU LONG TIME"!!!!

I'll check the laws here as well. I've honestly never heard of anyone getting a ticket for that.

I had a DEI Viper remote start installed on one of my vehicles. It works great. In Florida, we use it for just the opposite, to cool the car down in the summer.

I don't see this mentioned, but I don't think they can install remote start on manual transmission vehicles.

Other than that, its pretty common around here. Make sure it won't void any factory warranty that you have. And if you have a chip in your key, they'll have to work around that. I've read where people will order another factory key from the dealership and permanently install it somewhere in their dash (thereby bypassing the whole security feature provided by having a chip in the key), but it works.

Yes I have and yes they do.
There are fail safe features that are built into some units or can be built by a good mobile electronics installer that will allow a manual to have a remote start.

The extra key mod used under the dash is only active when the remote start is activated, there for not disturbing the factory security. If it was active all the time, your car would not start when you put your other coded key in because it would see a big difference in the two values added togather and not allow your car to start.

Well, I may have an "out" for you. Check with your local police department (or county) and see what their laws are for having a car running un-attened. In many counties is Wisconsin it carries a fine of like $100. The local news just ran a story where 4 or 5 people got tickets for warming up their cars in the Mall parking lot (I assume they had either left the car running and went in or started it from the mall and walked to the car).

They probably left their car running with keys in ignition, remote starts=no key, also doors stay locked.

And better yet, (dunno if all remotes do this) when I ue the remote start, as soon as you touch the brake pedal WITHOUT the keys in ingnition, it kills the engine. Took me awhile to getused to the engine running without the keys- I killed the engine more times than I care to remember before it became habit to put the key in... :p

So you put the key in and turn it like normal? It doesn't give you that screeching noise like you're trying to start it after it's started?

That only happens when you try to start it again, putting the key to the run (on) position wouldn't crank the starter or grind out the flywheel.

Thanks. I've never said I was the smartest guy when it came to cars :sign:

On my previous autostart systems, that was a concern...and I did it more than a few times.

My new system, however, has an anti-grind feature. No worries about turning the key too far anymore.

Stick with the DEI(Directed Electronics) brand. The top three they now offer are Viper, Python, and Clifford - aquired a few years back and now all Viper guts with the Clifford look. If you have the security chip in your key, you simply need a passlock module - which DEI makes for about every vehicle out there. Most of these can work around a stick shift also using the safety bypass switch. I suggest getting vehicle security along with the remote start. The alarm can still be protecting the vehicle while it is in the run mode. A/C or heater feature, starter kill, door locks - if you have pwr locks, and impact sensor are mostly standard now. Most the times the dealer contracts an afermarket company to do most of these installs. Go with an authorized aftermarket dealer - no worry on the voiding anything with an authorized dealer- you'll save money and get a superior product. IMHO

To me that makes sense, but depends on how the ordinance is written (and how picky the cops are). Old ordinances probably are worded "engine / cars running unattended" and there is no distinction between keyless starters. So if thats how its worded, it doesnt matter if the keys are not in the car and the door is locked.

I was shocked when I heard about those tickets here in the Milwaukee area, but I'm sure it is not just a Milwaukee thing.

It's against the law to have your car running/warming up?

Sheesh!

Varies from state to state. In Connecticut, diesel powered vehicles are in violation of Air Pollution Regulations if they are idling for more than three minutes while stationary. This isn't something the police would ticket you for but a DEP field inspector could issue a "Notice of Violation" which could result in a fine. I don't know if I've ever heard of it happening but it could.

over here it is illegal to idol car at all.I have a diesel makes it tough in the winter.

Does anyone have this on their vehicle? My wife is wanting this for Christmas and I'm not sure. Has anyone had it installed after market and how has it done? I guess I don't mind walking out to the car in the mornings and starting mine, but she is another story. She is taking this "her car" thing too far, LOL.

Suggestions/Ideas?

Just for your info.
http://www.cityoftulsa.org/ourcity/ordinances/Title37.asp

SECTION 511. MANNER OF PARKING

F. No vehicle with the motor running shall be parked on any street or alley
unless a licensed operator is in such vehicle.

we have by-laws here for that too. they dont apply when weather is below freezing, which is most of winter.

If you do get that remote starter, find a place that has installation included. i have a boxed one here, and its not an easy feat to install. usually car stereo/audio shops have deals, buy the starter there, includes installing.
