Gwheato has convinced me to go w/ our Church group to the Philippines the end of May, so i'm going, and taking my (then) 16 yo daughters, it should be a heck of an experience. Can real cuban cigars be found in Manila? Any other advice on going to that area, other than find some air conditioning

Congratulations. It will be an exciting adventure for the both of you. How long we you be there?? Good luck.

Everything I know about the PI would not be allowed on this forum. That was years ago but still.......

Right DOC!

2 weeks. It's supposed to be a demanding but rewarding trip, and i'm nervous to be totally honest.

Good for you Frank! I bet you'll have a good time and, it will be one of those experiences that you remember forever.

Most of my experience fits in this category, however.....

Manila is nice, a bit crowded (like most Asian cities) but not bad at all.

Yes you can find Cubans in the PI, but they are not easy to find. Ninety-nine out of every hundred are fakes though, so be careful.

Otherwise, if you drive, be very careful. Enjoy the culture and language (Magandang Umaga/Hapon/Gali - Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening, Kumusta - How are you?, Salamat - Thank you, Walang Anuman - You're Welcome, Iki nagagalak kang makilala kayo - A pleasure to make your aquaintance) Pronounce every vowel and the vowel sounds are identical to Spanish - Ah, Ae, E, Oh, OO.

That's all off the top of my head.

-K-

Enjoy your holiday mate
Watch the fake Cubans,There are a few of them there.
Try the local Cigars they are interesting :whistling:
And finally, If you go via Sydney let me know and I will meet you at the airport and sort you out with a bed,Transport and smoke while you are here

Pretty decent surfing (and diving...esp. some WWII wrecks) there.

Try to hit Catanduanes, Siargao, Pangutaran Islands, and other spots like Pancit Reef, Horseshoes, Pilar Point, Tuason Point...the Luzon region has some of the best spots/breaks too. Very nice.

Enjoy your trip and, as others, I would suggest bringing your own sticks.

The people there are, by and large, amazingly gracious and hospitable.

Other than that, my knowledge of the Phillipines is right in line with Ray's and would not, at all, be the subject of any manner of church mission I've ever known about. :D

I'm staying right out of this. I have no idea what those two Jarheads are talking about.

Doc.

Before a "Silver Bullet" was a P.O.S. watered down beer, Doc used to give out silver bullets to all his PI vets :p

I worked at a company that had computer installations at both Subic Bay and Clarke. One day CAFB was overrun by protesters. Our system went off line and a couple of days later, when things finally calmed down, they called us and said that somebody had broken into the telephone switch room and taken an axe to most of the machines. They left the axe sticking out of the AT&T 3B2! We told them to keep the computer and we sent them a new one. Years later, long after I had left the company, somebody called me at home from a computer depot somewhere and said, "I have this old 3B2 with your business card taped on it. We found your name in the phone book. The computer is damaged, in fact it looks like somebody took an axe to it! What should we do with it?"

During user acceptance, the local volcano started rumbling and they decided to close the base. Since we hadn't completed our user acceptance yet, the customer (US Navy) wasn't going to pay us. My company decided that getting paid was very important so the folks onsite had to run around the mostly deserted base, risking life and limb to confirm that all the phones had dial tone, call forwarding, etc...once they confirmed, the user signed off on the acceptance, we got paid and they had just enough time to rip the whole thing out before the volcano blew....

are you gonna be spending the whole time in manila or are you going to be going to some other islands? I was just in the Philippines in January for a missions trip, and I spent most of my time on a small island off the northern coast of Samar. It's really an incredible country and I hope you have a great time.

I think we're going to be close to Manila, mainly at squatter camps and orphanages. We're supposed to take a break for a couple days at Puerto Galera, that looks very interesting

So, you saw the women in the clubs stacking quarters without using her hands too?

That sounds like a great opportunity to see an amazing place. Have fun and take lots of pictures.
