The only car we every ordered was the wife's BMW X3. Our delivery date was about four months, but since her car was fine we weren't in a hurry to get the exact car we wanted. She was offerend a guaranteed trade in value and we got to drive her trade in until delivery.
BMW has a website and we were given a logon and password where we could follow the progress of the car through the factory, to shipping, to prep, to dealer delivery. It was really cool and they beat their quoted delivery date by a week and a half.
If the domestic car makers want to compete with the better european cars, this is the type of standard they'll have to step up to. It's not impossible, but someone in upper management has to "give a s#!t" enough to make flawless customer experiences happen.
