Newbie or anybody for that matter pass.

We have responded to your posts with nothing but motivation, just caution. I have read back on your posts and the other thread, you ignored advice and carried on regardless.
You are still defending your motivation. Come on, the board has been very patient. In most cases someone with +- 20 posts would be shot down at the first suggestion. Your persistence
has been in your favor. However, you have not read sufficient passes in the archives. There are very few passes where one box of sticks has been sent out. The most succesful was a
box of Sharks...now that's something to perk people up, yours is not!

Take a breath, step back and let the chips fall as they will. Participate in other passes, do some trades etc. and enjoy what this board has to offer. Don't be offended, guys on here have seen
it all, they will help you in any way possible if you ask for help but at the same time, they will always protect the community as a whole.

Good luck.

Brian

To put it simply

1) Most people, even newbies, aren't gonna jump on a pass where they only get to take 2 cigars whose value is less than what it will take to ship out this pass to the next guy.

2) You've got 20 some posts and have only been active for the past week trying to get this pass off the ground. <---reason #2 this pass won't get off the ground.

3) You don't have an experienced member backing you or helping out with this pass to give guidence and suggestions to you when needed.

4) You've never participated in a pass so you have NO idea what kind of effort it takes to get it off the ground and having to keep up with it while it makes it's rounds.

5) You've shunned the advice of several well respected members during the course of this whole thing...2 even offered to help you with the pass. Did you contact mmburtch or NCCL for their help or advice??

6) You keep using the term " the big kids won't let us play" ...do you understand now why they won't? You have no credibility here and it doesn't matter how good you're intentions are....we'll always look out for each other first before we worry about hurting some new guys feelings because he doesn't understand.

Right on, Brian.

And unless I've read the posts incorrectly, no one has told you to cancel your pass. In fact you've gotten good advice and offers of support. If you choose to disregard all this, then I can't really see any indication that you're looking to become a fully participating member in good standing.

True, passes are the hallmark of this forum, but passes aren't primarily about the exchange of cigar value. First and foremost, it's about providing an opportunity and a setting for members to get to know each other. In other words, passes are a vehicle for building friendships and camaraderie. Sending around a box of cigars just happens to be the mechanics through which this takes place.

My feeling are not hurt but apparently from the number of replies some of you have hard feelings. I am really sorry that this has occurred.

All I wanted to do was send a box of cigars off in the mail and see what came back. It seemed like it would be fun. I now have the message loud and clear that this is highly inappropriate and I will never attempt it again until I have many more posts and a much better selection of cigars.

I'm not here to piss off any "big kids", but this is what bugs me. I understand that it takes a lot of work to put a pass together. I have yet to participate being there hasn't really been one for my area. But what infinity said hits home. I've posted about large events that I have helped organize and only 1 or 2 hsve shown interest. I was told in a PM by a menber whom I will not identify, that I am gettin no response because I am still a newb according to my post count. In my opinion we are all newbs in a sense that we learn about this glorious lifestyle every day. What determins your status? Post counts?

I realize also trust comes into play. If I don't know you or havn't seen you around the boards I may or maynot participate.

So I have basicly gone back and forth here. I understand the boards concerns, but I also understand the trials of a "newb" since I am still one. :D

I chose to cancel the pass because experienced posters said is was a bad pass. No where in my posts did I say I was told to cancel it. I am smart enough to know that if nine experienced posters say it is a bad idea, you are probably right and no newbie is going to go against your opinions. Why beat a dead horse? The pass wasn't going to go, so I cancelled it, appologized and I am ready to drop it and move on.

You are missing one important fact. Due to his persistence, he was encouraged to continue but first seek the help of an established member. He did not do this, went off on his own
which unfortunately did not work out. So, this had nothing to do a with noob doing a pass ;) I can assure you, if he had contacted an established member who would have advised him to
run with a selection of sticks and let it be known that this established member would be assisting, this pass would be full by now.

It is this "if I can't do it my way, I'm going to take my bat and ball and leave" attitude that is going to get you flack here. You were encouraged to go for it. No one has doubted your intentions. No one has told you you can't do this.

What you have been given was solid advice, and offers to help. Not once in this thread have I seen a "Thanks, that's a good idea" or a "Thanks for the offer of assistance". If you have been lurking for the past year, then you should have a very good understanding that this is a community first and formost. It is seldom in any community that "the loner" succeeds.

I still reccomend that you go forward with a pass. You have some passion around it that could make it a very fun experience for those involved. If you really want to do your pass as originally planned, great, put feelers out there to see if you can interest 7 guys in the pass. Find a way to package the pass in a small enough box to keep postage under $10, maybe even a flat rate box. Finally, re-read this and the other thread with a cool head, and take the advice as it was intended.

My offer stands

I am inclined to wait. I have no intention of rocking the boat or trying to change the way things are done. I seemed to have inadvertently stepped on some toes and I think I will have a much better chance of recruiting seven people after things cool off a little. If I was a newbie reading this thread, thinking about joining a pass, the first few posts saying it was a bad idea and wouldn't work, would really make me hesitate before joining this pass no matter how bad I wanted to join a pass. I had one person tell me they would like to join but didn't want to risk making others mad at them by joining my pass. I sent them a SLR in the mail today so they don't have miss out on a cigar due to controversy.

Thanks for the offer to help and I will take you up on it at a later date, if it is still available.

If you're done, then please follow the link at the top of the page and have this thread and your "would it be" thread moved to the completed folder. That will for the most part end this discussion, and allow your cooling off period to begin. Not to mention cleaning up the "open" folder.

I still didn't see the reason you just didn't buy a sampler of cigars at your B&M?

I thought it would be fun to send a box of cigars out and see what came back.

It HAS been done before, but the original was a box of Anejos, Sharks I think. The only reason it flew at all was because the cigars were rare and much sought after. I think it would have been much more fun to offer for blind trades. If I ever trip over a box of Sharks, or hit the Lottery or something, I think that's exactly what I'll do.

Yep, was also done w/ a box of Padrons by Moki, Milleniums I think.

I don't see wasting a good opportunity as it seems there are several up for doing this as long as there's a change or two.

So, if Steamboat is cancelling the pass, I would like to pick up the ball and run with it. If there are no objections, I d like to read up a little more on other passes, study the rules, and get help from one of the more experienced members to get this started. I have a fairly good selection that I would be more than happy to put up to start this thing.

Does anyone have objections to this? If no objections, who would be a good candidate/volunteer to give direction, pointers, advice, criticism (constructive), etc.?

My concern is why didn’t the first few posts tell you “it was a bad idea and wouldn't work”. Actually they did, you just dismissed it. So my concern is why is that you continue to dismiss the advice, suggestions, and offers to assist as “The Big Kids won’t let you play” or that your wanting to host a pass is “stepping on toes”.

What’s with this newbie entitlement mentality? I don’t understand this “I’d do it but I don’t want to make someone mad or rock the boat”. It’s pure BS. There’s no separation between “Fog” and “Newb”, this is a community of brothers and Sisters. Yes, reputation is important but reputation is the result of those you interact with getting to know your character. It’s the same in every aspect of society; this isn’t something unique to CigarPass.

Why on earth would you expect to be received differently here than at work, school, or anywhere else? In the real world do you always get what want from people who know nothing about you, just because you want it? And when you don’t get what you want, is it because “The Big Kids won’t let you play” or is it because you’ve not taken the opportunity to show yourself to be of good character?

Quit being the Newbie Martyr, it’s unbecoming a Brother.
