Many thanks to all of you for the kind words and prayers. It means alot to us, and I've relayed many (if not all) of the messages to my brother and my entire family. Its nice to hear such heartfelt kindness from people (they) don't know
Since many of you asked, I will update his situation. He's actually feeling better. He still looks terrible, but he's acting alot more like himself. He's finally started eating again after nearly a week. He's started sitting up in bed, walking (running) around the hospital room, laughing a little and playing. These are excellent signs. The doctors feel he's going to make a 100% recovery. He's still got lots of dead brown skin attached, which we are told will eventually rub off, flake off or otherwise come off. He's got LOTS of exposed raw bleeding skin- though the bleeding has slowed alot. He still has the IV in his hand, but they have stopped giving him the fluids (saline?) continuously because his last blood count said he was low on iron, which they explained was a direct result of him not eating for so long.
They are sill giving him Morphine, though not as frequently. And this weekend they want to try and get him to take something for pain by mouth instead of by IV. He is still in contact isolation, not because he is contagious or anything, but because of all the raw exposed skin/legions they are worried still about his coming in contact with germs, bacteria, etc... They're worried about visitors and stuff giving him something.
The family is doing the best we all can. Like most families (I would think), with lots of kids of all ages, its hard to see someone so little suffer so much- especially while all we can do is sit there and watch. We've all cried, yelled, prayed and cried some more. There is no one person to blame, except for maybe the original Doctor who should NOT have given a 19mo old such strong antibiotic...?
This is the longest visit in a hospital I can remember ever. The doctor said we've got another week or so until he's released, and it will depend entirely on how well his skin heals, since they won't release him until he's out of danger from infection or contact infection.
He's getting lots of love... His favorite place to rest is on the chest of one of us, and I can tell you that AquaPhor jelly they're covering him in twice a day doesn't come out of clothes in the wash.
So far, The Optomologist (eye dr) wants to see him for several weeks after he's dismissed, since his fear, is damage to his eye's... The other doctors haven't commented yet, but I'm sure they'll want follow up visits too, but we're not at that stage yet.
I can tell you all this, my 19 mo nephew is stronger than all of us...My hopes and prayers are that he won't have any scarring mentally or physically, or have any memory of this whole horrific ordeal. And that this will not reoccur, which I read it sometimes does.
God bless all the little children of the world... I've seen more pain in the faces of parents in that children's hospital than I'd ever thought I would. I've seen more pain in the faces of children, and heard the screams of pain and terror from innocent children coming from the rooms at night while visiting my nephew. This has been a nightmare- and I can't wait until its over.
Thank you all so much for your blessings and concern. It means alot to all of us.
