Quite honestly, Reds (sockeye) are the tastiest of the pacific salmon. More fat/oil in them and tasty tasty tasty. Best for smoking as well for the same reasons. Coho are the most fun to catch as they fight like mad to get away. Kings are just big lunkers that will sometimes fight, sometimes not and taste 2nd best (unless you get a rare white king- then they are tied with reds)

As far as the halibut go, just keep in mind I'll have my own ocean going boat starting spring 2007! there'll be a heck of a party- my mortgage burning party in conjunction with a boat christening party... open invitations all around.

to whet your appetite...

not the barn door variety, but the big one on the left (mine!!) was 65#

Well, I don't have any clue how to catch sockeye with a hook but you put a quarter mile of net behind and I'll catch ya some REDS!

Uumm...that has nothing to with anything, I'll guess 84 and thanks for the contest Swissy.

Hey, Swissy. Too beer-ed out to read the rules to your contest. Just send me a couple cans of Copper River Reds smoked. :D Will trade for Habanas
Enjoyed some nice halibut out of Seward with some friends last night. Fond memories of killing fish with friends and family....

Way ahead of ya, brother! ;) use the redfish and the seafood magic like it was salt and pepper! put it on damn near everything...

Blue Dragon (visiting), Peter's Creek and I got together last night for a fish fry (Halibut, Salmon and Scallops!), beer/Whiskey drinkning and of course a cigar or two. Used the seafood magic- on everything!
Yums all around!

DING DING DING DING!!

We have a winner! It's Friday, early, but I'll be busy all day at work. Since this is the EXACT number of red salmon we caught, there's no reason to wait until this evening.

jcpyro, you got PM!!

Congrats, and fish fry at jcpyro's place! we'll work out the details as to when he wants it and when he'll be there to accept it.

Good Guess! Here's the breakdown

1st trip to China Poot bay = 2 (all rod & reel)
2nd trip to China Poot bay = 7 (1 rod, 6 dip net)
3rd trip to China Poot bay = 12 (all dip net)
4th trip to China Poot bay = 12 (all dip net)
1st trip to Copper River = 0 (that sucked!)
2nd trip to Copper River = 30 (all dip net)
GRAND TOTAL = 63

and that's just the reds... not included are the kings and the silvers!!

When you dip net them are they starting to decompose yet?I remember fishing for coho and chinook in michigan and when they got a certain way up the river they started to decompose, thats when you could snag hook them and dip net them.

Nope... these are frsh from the ocean! The China Poot fish are 50 feet from the ocean. The Copper River are abiout 15 miles, but still shiny silver and fresh.
