It's actually a common practice in many areas (mostly Northern) here. My lake house is just outside Spooner, WI and the bar/bait shop directly across the lake from me starts pouring one anytime I come in.
The joke is, after taking the shot and setting the glass down, you have to manage to say "smooth" in the most sincere way you can muster.
Don't even get me started on our Old Fashions...
