Ok...I did a search before posting this and I came up with this.

I went by my B&M the other day for some sticks and started talking w/ the owner. The conversation got switched to whether or not I had tried an Opus. I said no and she said don't even bother. She said if I wanted a cigar that stacks up to an Opus 100% and is 50% cheaper than I should go with an LG Chisel Diez. She said she won't ever smoke an Opus again since she found this stick.

In my searches I found that some CPers thought the quality of tobacco was lacking in the LGs. Does this still apply? I'm looking for some fresh opinions on this because the earliest posts I could find were from 2005.

Does the flavor really stack up to what it is supposed to?

Thanks for all the replies/criticism

Sounds like a sales pitch to me. I don't think the LG Diez tastes much like an Opus, despite the fact that they are both Dominican puros. You may like them, you may not, the same with Opus.

I like both, but they certainly do not taste alike.

Lurch, there is only one way to find out if you like a certain cigar, and that is to try it for yourself.

Thanks to a generous brother here, I've been able to smoke a steady diet of LG Diez cigars. Are they as good as Opus? Yes. Do they tast like Opus? You can tell they are both DR Puros, and I used to think they did taste similar, but the more I smoke them the less, I think that.
Doc.

I find that Yes, I do like the LG lines. I don't compare them to the Opus. They both have good profiles, but IMO not similar.

Although if you offered an Opus RDC or a Small Batch No.1 to me, I think that Carlito might be a little upset.

Yea, I read that they were both 100% DR except the filler in the LG had some imperfections such as short mixed with the long. If thats the case than I can see why it would be 50% cheaper.

I never heard that and I doubt it's true. And I wouldn't say they're 50% cheaper either.linky

Compare the price for the LG Chisel which is $10 to these. I know these are internet prices but this still gives some kind of idea.

edit to include this link to show where I heard about the short filler

LUMBERG! Do a search on that asshat. He tried to tell folks to use anti-freeze as a humidifying agent. Don't believe anything he has said.

Oddly enough I was told the same thing by a B&M salesman in South Carolina when I asked if he had any opus in stock. Having tried both I didn't agree with the comparison in taste, but figured it was just a sales pitch. Strange that other people are giving the same pitch.

The only thing I have found that taste in some ways like an Opus is Diamond Crown Max, and I did say in some ways.

Keep in mind most cigar smokers are not as discriminating as the folks who roam these hallowed forums. Most cigar smokers believe the crap they read in CA and wouldn't know a good cigar if it bit them in the ass.

Lumberg:
...Finally, about the CLimaxx beads, I disagree. I use low-tox automotive antifreeze with great results and it is WAY cheaper than Climaxx! Yes it is made with PG (the regular stuff is Ethylene Glycol) and it's about $6 for A GALLON! That's just about a lifetime supply. And my humi has been at EXACTLY 70% since I started using it!...

Yes, it does seem that he is a complete tool...Thanks for the advice

The LG chisel in my opinion isn't much. I smoked one not to long ago and suffered through it. Won't be buying anymore.

I agree the Small Batch No.1 is a great smoke -- Small Batch No.2 should be out soon! :)

Well, if they have no Opus in stock, they want to sell you something that you might like, which is similarly strong in some ways.

At the risk of replying to the same thread 4x in a row... this I don't get. I've never noticed a taste similarity between the two. DCMs are much milder, and to me a very different blend.

i dunno....i'm just gonna try and find both and give them a smoke....
