Or does it seem that most new members have the "I want it now" mentality? Are they young and just expect people to give them what they want? Or they just not capable of hanging around first before expecting things?

I think the "brotherhood" is falling short on these guys. When I joined people actually participated more and knew others from trading, bullshitting, poking fun at each other, participating in passes (before hosting one), reading more and posting less.

Now it seems that we are having an influx of guys who want it now w/out putting any time or effort. Am I the only one that is getting annoyed by this? I'm sure it's cyclical, but damn it's just rubbing me the wrong way.

I would say yes and no to this…

I’ve been here a little over a year now and have seen lots of “crash and burns”.
Young guys (and some not so young guys) come to this board and expect to get hard to find cigars immediately.
They treat this place like a cigar store and they are just shopping for what they want.

Then there are the guys that “read more and post less”. Those folks understand (thru reading past threads) that this
place operates a little differently than other cigar boards. They tend to start slow, learn about cigars, get acquainted with
other members and hang around longer.

New members need to realize this board is not a cigar store; it is a community of folks that enjoy the same hobby and
like to share their knowledge (and some good smokes). The trading of cigars is secondary to the community of cigar smokers that
Rod (and others) has cultivated here.

I was a noob (still am) but when i first came aboard, i became known to the players, and participated and read more and posted less. I got inoloved in the newbie trades, was INVITED into a box pass and didn't hop on every box split. Newbies, read more, get more involoved, and please don't make an asshat of yourself early here...you will get spanked, and spanked hard. Seems to me the community feeling is absent in the newest of the noobs, and that is not what this placec is about. it may say cigar pass on the page header, but i feel it is less about cigars and more about community and friendships.
i hope i don't come across as an elitist douchebag, as those who know me can attest, i am not that (well, maybe a little ;) ).

As a newbie and a young guy (25) I have to say i agree and disagree with this. I can only speak for myself but I started here from another board with the intention of hanging out a bit where some of the guys I met there came to often. I did a lot of reading and found that as far as information goes I don't have nearly as much to contribute as most of you guys and with the close nit family aspects of a community like this it can be a bit hard to be assertive and allow the FOG's to see your true personality and sense of humor.

I do want to be involved in trades and passes as well but mainly to have more interactions with the members here, hence my wanting to get an Iowa herf going sometime. George seriously one of these days I'm visiting Chicago, prolly not soon but sometime.

Now with my 4 hours of sleep and being awake since 2:30 am I have totally forgot what I am getting at...... I guess what I'm saying is just what I said in the first sentence. I have a want it now mentality, but I want the community more, so yes and no.

I think you got this right dead center. Newbs are showing up with that instant gratification attitude, like CP was just another cigar store. If you are being paid for your opinion, NOW is a reasonable expectation.

To our credit, I've seen brothers take the time to "salvage" some of the impetuous few who would have been chased away otherwise.
 
With an ever increasing membership it is harder to know the newer members as well as you did the older ones. Also, with this increase will come more of the "instant gratifacation" guys. I don't think it is a greater percentage of what it used to be but it is a greater number and we tend to key in on people who are like that so it seems that they are here more when it really is about the same ratio as before.
 
Ive been on here for a little over a year and i feel like if you don't lurk around for a while you dont really get the ability to see what this place is about. However post an intro and look around at whats out there. If you have something positive to add, add it. Don't come in here however with this know it all attitude or this my way or the highway it doesn't work. Be civil and learn before you try to overtake.

Like i said, I've been involved in my fair share of things, but i also lurked truthfully for damn year a year before i really got into posting and invovled. I've also learned you have to have thick skin but also you have to think before you post anything here.

Best advice to the newbs reading this is LURK and watch what goes on. Read lots post less. After you are comfortable with things jump on in and start contributing, make a name for yourself and become a FOG eventually.

EDIT: I'm also pretty young (20) and i think its not that hard to be level headed it's all in the presentation of yourself.

For me,I joined 5 cigar forums the same week.some you all belong to,some none,I joined with intentions of shareing my love for gars and the whole scene.I also started because I am just starting collecting and even though I smoked for years,I am new to collecting.
I am not new to forums and as I mentioned in one of the five forums intro thread,I mod some and just talk on some but I do not have an alternative posting style.I am me and thats how I post.I am honest and up front and never joined with intentions of getting something for free.Its not my style and I feel it shows bad character,much like the non working friend who mooches everything from friends.

Even a noob can offer advice,for me,I will share some of how I like to conduct myself on forums....I like to read,always have so I will read more than start threads.I reply to offer help primarily and have fun discussions secondary.Most of the questions I have can be found with a simple search of the forums or google.Research is easy and the internet is the worlds largest and simplest reference guides,a tool so to speak.
I play a game on some tech forums with myself when bored...if I do not know an answer to a question,I search until I find it,then reply if there was no resolution offering what I have just learned.In the process I learn as well.

For me, giveing gives more satisfaction to me.

Again if the you feel the op is generaliseing towards all newbs and it doesn't apply to you,let it fly...no biggy.

I would have to say, that lurking and reading is definitely the best way to go. Still a newb, and 33yrs old, I have been on the board since last Sept, and have eased into it. I have done some purchases, and have done some trading, but you have to be willing to contribute to the "overall", CP experience, and not go for broke and get shot down early on. I guess I would say, "Just give it time." Be willing to read, learn and make friends. Maybe try giving first, and receiving later, rather than expecting first.

Brandon is dead on target. Seems like a bunch of em want it all right now. There is a definate pecking order here. Read more, post less, figure it out. Once you get it...Well you know. :thumbs:
 
I'm a noob, a young noob (19). However, I wouldn't have the love or respect for cigars and the cigar forums that I'm on if it wasn't for the people that I have gotten to know over the years showing me those new worlds. Lkyman created a cigar loving monster when I started to hang out with him; Matty Vegas has been nothing but a great BOTL to Lkyman and myself since we have met him. Brandon along with a few other "trusted members" of the forum have allowed me to buy, sell, and trade with them over my time here and have also become people that I have developed a huge amount of respect for as my fellow BOTL's. I just think that if I was able to do this than the newer people who join this forum should expect the same amount of respect to be given to them as they give their respects first to the people who make this forum what it is, instead of trying to find some "rare sticks". My $0.02, Nothing but love for all my BOTL's :thumbs:

I can give you a million good reasons to hang around, but if you don't get it - you don't get it. If you feel that way - it's time to move on... This "behind the scenes" BS is just that - BS... If you can't say it in public, don't be sneaking off to a corner to whisper like a friggen nerd. Your argument is very weak if all you have is a legion of silent warriors... :rolleyes:
