Iced car - don't know how you east coast guys do it

I got up this morning to get in my car, and I noticed what appeared to be ice cubes all over my car. I've had ice on my car before, but never like this. I unlocked the door and attempted to open it, and it wouldn't open. Turns out it was iced shut. I had to push and pull several times before it would open, and when it did, all I heard was the sound of breaking ice. Had to get water to help break the ice on the windshield. Windows obviously wouldn't roll down. De-icing the car so I could drive was a 15 min job. If this is normal for you guys on the east, I don't know how you do it every day. Strange weather we're having it - it was in the low 30's here this morning.

15 minutes isn't too bad... but what we east coast guys do is we get a garage ;)

Global warming strikes again, Bubba!
Yup. The theory has been validated almost too well, which will be unfortunate for humanity. (Extreme weather is part of the theory.) It is both gratifying and scary seeing climate models that I ran on punched cards as a summer research assistant almost 30 years ago coming true. As an aside, I'd like to take a moment to thank the US Navy for funding weather research way back then.

To get back on topic, as Doc Wylie states, remote starting is the way to go. Makes for comfort both in the winter and summer.

Remote starters are for pussies. Real men carry ice picks and resort to urinating on their own vehicle to help melt the ice.

Planning gets it done.

Up here my wife has the car port and I park out on the street. I give myself an extra 15 minutes for ice scraping and truck warm up in the winter and plan another 20 minutes or so commute time if I have to drive more than a couple miles in bad weather. Seems folks up here always forget how to drive in the ice and snow. First major snowfall of each season sees a couple hundred fender benders and ditch divers during the morning commute.

Just take your time and give plenty of distance between you and the other drivers out there.

Real men have garages and mock people driving an iceball with a tiny little circle cleared on the front windshield that drivers use as a periscope while they drive towards their inevitable doom. :)

But urinating is a close second.

Note to self: Drink plenty of coffee on iced in mornings.

It's just the normal noises around here. I have a snow shovel and ice scrapper in the car just in case.

I have a self starter along with the car alarm. Just hit the button, the car starts up and run for 20m or so worm and ice gone.

The other day I used the cover of my calculator that was in my backpack to scrape the ice off the window. lol

This is bullshit huh Rod?
I woke yesterday and looked outside and said to myself it cant be Christmas morning... its too cold outside.

Hell I usually wear shorts on Christmas.

Who do we see about this problem?

Anyway, in all seriousness, if you're cheap like me and don't have a car with a remote starter (and refuse to shell out the coin to get one put in), go to your local AutoZone, O'Reilly's or whatever. Pick up the following things:

1) Rain-X. As I mentioned, lather up your windows once a week. Ice/snow/sleet/etc won't stick very well.
2) Cheap can of window de-icer. It's all the same stuff - look at the ingredients.
3) The de-icer for your windshield wiper reservoir. (I make my own with distilled water, 90+% isopropyl, and anti-freeze)

That combo really puts mother nature in check.

I also carry my Blazer torch at all times. That fixes the iced over lock in a no time flat.

I walked outside Christmas morning at my parents house in Hilton Head, SC and it was no lie.... 80 degrees. I'm not sure what you're talking about with it being cold on the east coast....

Ery

You west coast girls worried about a cold draft going up your skirt or something??? :)

Yep, was in the mid to upper 60's here Christmas (SC). We've had to turn the A/C on in the house several times this past week.

If you don't have a garage, get a car cover. Or, at least cover the windshield with a big beach towel and park the driver's side as close to the house as possible.

How do those "East Coast" guys do it? I hope the rest of the MN crew reads this, it will give us something to laugh about at our next herf. :)

Ah that's nuttin' Rod. Check out what my swimming pool looks like most of the time:
