Iced car - don't know how you east coast guys do it

I got up this morning to get in my car, and I noticed what appeared to be ice cubes all over my car. I've had ice on my car before, but never like this. I unlocked the door and attempted to open it, and it wouldn't open. Turns out it was iced shut. I had to push and pull several times before it would open, and when it did, all I heard was the sound of breaking ice. Had to get water to help break the ice on the windshield. Windows obviously wouldn't roll down. De-icing the car so I could drive was a 15 min job. If this is normal for you guys on the east, I don't know how you do it every day. Strange weather we're having it - it was in the low 30's here this morning.
 
I have a two car garage that eliminates that problem in the morning. Sometimes if we're out I have to scrape the windows to get home though.
 
It's just the normal noises around here. I have a snow shovel and ice scrapper in the car just in case.
 
I mix my own de-icer and put it in my windshield washer fluid reservoir. Carry a can in the back seat as well. I have some pretty hardcore scrapers, too. The other day we got about 3/4" of ice covering everything. Level 3 travel emergency. I think we saw about 12 wrecks in the ER that night.

Took me 25 minutes to dig my car out. Locks frozen shut, doors froze shut, and I drive a hatchback. Terrible, really. Welcome to our world, Rod. :D

Edit: By the way, the key is lather up your windows in Rain-X once a week. If you get a lot of snow and ice, the stuff doesn't stick to it very well - slides right off. Pro tip.
 
The de-icer works great if you can get into the car to use it. There are a couple of cans in the house for that reason. We have been getting freezing rain on and off all week so both trucks were frozen pretty good, luckily I have a remote starter in mine.

Rod, never do that again!!! I speak from experience. Sometimes that ice can be so strong, what ends up breaking is your door handle and not the ice. :angry: You do not want that to happen. Next time, enter the car via trunk ( I am not kidding), or enter through the passenger side. Once inside use your feet and push open the driver door.

OK Todd, you may have been able to get away with this if it was barely hitting freezing temps but for future reference... oh hell, just bring a camera and take pictures for us. LOL :)
 
30 degrees? Wow! You California guys get all the breaks with that warm weather. :whistling:

My solution to frozen car syndrome is remote starting. That way, after the car has had a few minutes to warm up and get the defroster running the ice is melted enough for you to finish the job.
 
My car was frozen the other day but not too badly. Around here there aren't too many days of the year where the car will be that frozen, maybe a couple times a year. It's almost worse when there's just a coat of thick frost on it because even after you scrape for ten minutes you still have to sit in your car and wait for the defroster to clear enough of the windshield so you can see.
 
Kenny - yeah, it was just above freezing (35F to be exact). Used cold water to help break apart the ice. I know better than to use warm water. ;)

No kidding about the door handle. I'd enter through the trunk, but then if someone saw me, that would be pretty strange... Kinda hard to go through the trunk of a mustang anyways. I can't believe you guys deal with this type of stuff on a regular basis. Things us guys on the left never (almost never) experience. I can only imagine how bad it must be when it's below 0.
 
I lived in Atlanta and Dallas for a few years prior to returning home to NJ after school. I miss those places greatly. I really can't stand winter in the northeast.
 
I had 3 inches of ice all around the car this am. Took me 20 minutes to cut thru the ice. And the commute was a nightmare. I have never seen the roads so slick today. It was like driving on an Ice rink. So many accidents. Luckily it is warming up and the city decided to start salting.
 
Most of my team's patrol units were frozen over this morning as well. One of my Officers used his Dragonball-Z ninja asian powers and blew all the ice off by performing a roundhouse kick near our vehicles.

it looks like we have some seasoned pros here. Rain-X does wonders and make sure to pick up your wipers before getting out of your car. If they get iced in it will be more problems. To tell you the truth, i have never used deicer. But i have gone to a liquor store and bought a cheap bottle of vodka. That does the trick, but your vents will smell for a while.
 
I will trade I had to shovel two feet of snow and ice of my car the other day PDX got his pretty hard for a week it sucks now worse cause it has turned into shush and ice on the road and that stuff is a pain in the ass to drive in rp
