Humidor Problem

What do you mean? How do you calibrate a digital LCD hygrometer? I don't see any adjustment/reset buttons on it. I always thought that a digital LCD hygrometer comes pre-adjusted from the factory or that its internal integrated circuitry electronics are pre-set at the factory to the fullest accuracy.

Sorry George...your assumptions are just wrong. No digital hygrometer is 100% accurate, even the set and forget system in my aristocrat can be 1% off in either direction. They are little pieces of hong kong electronics, not highly specialized finely crafted detail eqipment. My radio shack is off by more than 7%

You don't calibrate it, you simply add the difference in your head. If you open your weatherstripador and the device reads 70%, and is for example, like yours 5% off, then the actuall humidity is closer to 75%. Just add it up in your head, don't mess with your hygrometer.

From what I can tell, mine is functioning correctly. I've even used it in some of my other humidors and its registered the correct humidity level. So, if you think that my hygrometer is inaccurate, it's not.

The point is this George. Believe it. Your hygrometer is not reading accuaretely. Do you know what the proper reading should have been when you performed the salt test? Assuming you did everything properly, the reading should have been 75%, NOT 70%. Thats just the truth, no opinion. If what you told us is accurate...then your hygrometer is off by at least 5%. No debate. Sorry if you don't want to hear it.

you are using a hygrometer that is 5% off no matter what humidor you keep it in.

Your humidor was probably working right until you started to screw with it based on a 5% flucuation in your hygrometer. Now its all messed up and will probably never be right agin. You've over wet your beads and now your cigars are over humidified.

Just listen for once...seriously...

All this information is available. In fact, I don't know how you found the direction to do a salt test without reading what the humidity should be. Its like reading the recipie for backing a pie but you stopped reading before you saw the temp the oven should be set at. Your pie turns out raw. Your oven maybe working right, your not using your head or the oven properly...

I can tell you with complete authority that:

1. Just because your hygrometer used to be perfect, it will most likely not remain so.
2. Very few humidity sensors come pre-adjusted from the factory. Most are lucky to be within 5% at 70F.

I do building \ environmental controls for a living. The humidity sensors we install are generally 3% accurate sensors. ($100) These sensors are seldom spot on from the factory, and must be calibrated. We also install 1% accurate sensors on occasion,($200+) they are also seldom spot on out of the box and must be calibrated.

ALL of these humidity sensors must be recalibrated from time to time, usually on a yearly basis, sometimes sooner depending on the environment. An environment that is inherently moist (like your humidor) will need more frequent calibration.

Do not doubt me, this is my business, it is what I do.

Now, do the damned salt test on your hygrometer.

Just had a thought. I do not have experience with a digital hygrometer. But as an electronic component it may be showing signs of a battery going flat. Maybe a new battery and then the tests etc.. would be the way to go :)

If I were a troll, I wouldn't own 7 humidors and a few hundred premium cigars.

Ok, so lemme get this straight... you have 7 humidors and a few hundred premium cigars? how does that translate then? 50 cigars per humidor? whats the capacity of each humidor??

here's a couple of options for the sake of expediency and my ever dwindling sanity:

1) Chuck/sell/trade all the rest of those humidors and get a new one, preferably one that many FOGs already have given 2 thumbs up about.

2) get the sail wax and do what was recommended that you do with it (if you have no time to get it, how in the hell do you have the time to check 7 humidors for the proper RH% and seal integrity as well as posting to the newsgroup? that doesn't add up).

3) calibrate your hygrometer (you've been on a few cigar communities and this never came up? ever???) UGH!

4) bring the humidor back and ask for a refund or at least an explanation as to what the deal is.

5) take up something a little less stressfull like shadow puppets.

Maybe booting him sor being a pain in the ass just to set precedence. LMAO< HERe he is all gung ho, still nont phucking wanting to listen to anyone. WHAT a loser.

I can't believe this thread is still going. I'm a bloody newbie of newbies and EVEN I did the salt test on my hygrometer. Fuck. This thread has got to end.

I've decided that I am going to transfer some of my full cigar boxes into a cooler. My humidor is still holding the humidity and the humidity level is at 65% the last time that I checked it. I've decided to go the cooler route in exchange for only the one humidor that's been giving me problems and because of the mention in a previous post that my hygrometer might be off with the humidity level reading. This is why I am going this route. I'm going to check out places like Walmart and Sears. When I get the cooler, I am going to let it air out outside in the freezing cold for 1 day so there is no smell coming from the inside of it.
I am then going to get some empty cigar boxes that have the cedar smell inside them. I will break up the empty boxes and place some of the cedar inside the cooler so there can be some cedar odor in the cooler. Then I will put my cigar boxes, beads and hygrometer inside the cooler and seal it shut. Hopefully, this will end the humidity problems.

LOL.... I can't believe yall are still responding to this guy. He makes this crap up as he goes..... he's a liar.

You don't have 7 humidors filed with premium cigars and not have a clue about regulating humidity. Oh yea, I have 7 humidors that are perfect with all this super expensive cigars but I have this one cheap azz humidor that I don't know what is wrong with it and even though everyone is telling me whats wrong with it well, I have these 7 humidors filled with premium cigars and know what I'm doing so I can't be wrong but I still have this cheap azz humidor that dosn't hold humidity and my hygrometer is correct because I did a salt test and it read 70% (yes, it should be 75 but I have 7 other humidors that are perfect) and I have these other 7 humidors that are perfect with all these expensive cigars and I'm not wrong and neither is my hygrometer because I did a salt test and I know what I'm doing so I added more water to my beads because well I have these other perfect humidors and I know what I'm doing........

This guy is catching more fish then Bill Dance.

Now I'm going to check on all seven of my imaginary humidors with their imaginary hyrogmeters reading exactly 75% which were calibrated with the imaginary salt test at 70%. :D :D Where's my precious oh precious one humidor to rule them all!!!

This guy has only one redeeming value. He's driven me to drink. Thank you Bill

Doc.

I'd be careful if I were you. Letting your cooler sit outside in the cold could shrink the plastic. Once that happens you are screwed because you will have no seal left whatsoever! Sailwax won't even help you at that point! If you have already done this, no worries...put all of your hundreds of premium cigars inside the shrunken cooler along with a 50/50 mix of anit-freeze (make sure it's the green kind, that's the best) and water. To ensure a good seal and to maintain humidity, add a large line of superglue around the entire perimeter of the lid. (Be liberal with the superglue at this step.) Close the lid tightly (listen for the "whoosh" ...that's the sound of all your problems disappearing) and sit on the lid for 30 minutes. Leave the cooler in a temp. regulated place for 2 weeks undisturbed (whatever you do, DON'T OPEN IT!) If you can be patient and follow these instructions meticulously, you shouldnt have anymore humidity problems. Good luck and good smoking! :whistling:

I tried to add my own touch with the Bill Dance remark.... the rest is pure SamClemmons.

Most of us here think you are a troll. But since none of us here are moderators or admins, the only thing we can do is give you a hard time. Okie dokie Bill, since neither your humidor nor Monica can keep the perfect moisture level for you, and seeing how you aren't here to take anyones advice, I have forwarded this thread on Rod. He can have the last say in this.

I think we might be better off without Billy. Looks like a troll to me. Funny thing is, his IP points to an AOL Proxy, much like our old friend Barney. Interesting.

I say we kick Billy out. No need for this BS. Nothing but a troll.

Al Gore....after all, he did invent the interweb.

Wait a minute. Why are you accusing me of being a troll? I haven't been posting BS in this forum. And I don't know why Alofus thinks that I have been talking crap in here? This is NOT true.

Everything that I have said about me owning 7 humidors is NOT BS. And another thing, I AM taking other people's advice in here about getting myself a cooler to transfer some of my cigars into. So, I don't see why some of you think that I am making things up here. I am NOT.
I just wanted you all to know this.
