Happy Thread

I get more debilitating pain in that leg than I do in the remainder of my body. Every time I am assigned a new doctor, they do a jaw dropping double take at the volume of gabapentin I take daily just to keep the phantom pains manageable. "Maybe we should work on ramping you down a little bit, no?"

That IS ramped down, doc...
Interesting that you mention Gabapentin. I have a lot of neck and back pain from arthritis from abusing my body. The VA put me on Gabapentin for pain management. Any time I am prescribed a drug I am not familiar with I research the drug. There were warnings about "ramping up" and "ramping down" with this drug. DO NOT STOP THIS DRUG COLD TURKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the mean time I am ramped up to the max amount allowable.

So I go on to read about people who used Gabapentin regularly and were hospitalized for a car wreck, heart attack, etc. and the doctors had no idea about their use of Gabapentin and, thus, could not figure out why the patient was having odd symptoms. I ramped myself down and never took it again.

When my doc asked why, I explained it to her and she went on to tell me that these cases were extremely rare and the symptoms were not life threatening. I manage the pain now with stretching and ibuprofen.

It certainly can be a bad drug, but it does exactly what its suppose to also. I learned you weigh both sides for your situation and make the call.

My dad is in Gabapentin and a doctor abruptly stopped his Rx without any ramp down time and it had a severe effect on my dad. I agree about not stopping that cold Turkey.

Gabapentin/Neurontin was originally developed as an anti-seizure medication for children, I believe. The common usage now for nerve function suppression was actually a tertiary effect, from what I understand. Yeah, the stuff can be bad news if stopped abruptly but, as Chad says, it does what it is supposed to do. I'm currently on 1200 mg three times a day, so, 3600 mg daily. I was much higher, but we worked to get to a point where the chronic phantom pains were manageable (they are always there), and I started Cymbalta (Duloxetine) as a stack to help with acute pains at night that would wake me up. I'd much rather not take anything at all, but I've yet to get to the point of tapering off -- which probably won't happen, unfortunately.

I was honestly thinking it was something that was put in place or a band that was worn around the knee. I wouldn’t have thought it was a ligament.

Does stretching or yoga, help to ease the pain and swelling?
I am doing a series of stretches and isometric exercises. I am already noticing some minor relief.

Yeah, there are a couple stretches I do when my back is hurting or getting tight and it makes a huge difference, along with hamstring stretches.

1200 mg three times a day for a total of 3600 mg per day. I can tell (violently and painfully) when a dose is starting to wear off every 5-6 hours.

I took it prior to my back surgery for a little bit for the nerve pain. Unfortunately, the nerve pain wasn't nearly as bad as the pain in my back, so it did nothing for me.

Ah, ok. My wife is defending her thesis tomorrow.🤞
Best of luck to the future Dr. Sell! My wife is currently ABD, and will probably never complete her thesis for... reasons. But, she's made peace with that. What is your wife's thesis, and how many pages did it come out to?

Ed, has your primary ever tried you on pregablin (Lyrica)? Even with the gaba, try adding turmeric 3x daily along with cinnamon (ceylon only) in your coffee each morning (and anytime else you could use it). I put it in my coffee and protein shakes.

I now swear by the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and ceylon daily. I prescribed this for my 63 yr old mother about 3 months ago and it’s helped her tremendously. Also doing 325mg acetaminophen with 400mg ibuprofen for her breakthrough pain. Here's more info and tons of reviews:

Worth talking to your doc about the pregablin and what they think about the turmeric and ceylon. If anything, I would encourage everyone to learn more about the benefits and results from others using this combination. My mother is all over fb telling her peers how much better she is feeling overall. 👍
