Cuban vs Others

IMO... Cuban tobacco in general is far superior to any other country...When a cigar is made right, with Cuban tobacco, nothing else comes close...
Snob! :p

But I didn't say you were too far off base.

Wilkey,

If I offered you a 10 year old Cohiba OR a 10 year old Opus, which would you take, you can only take one? :)

Oooooh,
Decisions, decisions. The Cohiba of course. But then I've gone on record as not being a fan of Opus and Fuente stuff in general. However, if Ashton VSG had been around ten years ago (they made their public appearance around 1999 IIRC) that would be a much harder choice.

Still, the idea of blending Padron and Cuban tobacco does not immediately strike me as something that makes me smack my lips. Perhaps that's because Padron maduros, which I smoke 8:1 over the naturals, are so distinctive and "un-Cuban." Maybe their natural tobacco or some of the leaf that goes into Tatuajes might make a superior hybrid blend. I could certainly see the VSG filler and wrapper working well with the fuller bodied Cuban blends but then I'd have to ask why? I guess I'll wait to see what the master blenders can do. No doubt there is the potential for some real magic but it will be a decade at least before some of these hybrids will cross our lips.

It'd be a tossup depending on my particular mood and expected accompaniment. Let's say a Siglo V and a VSG Illusion. I dare say I'd expect find both equally satisfying, but different. In all honesty I don't think I could make that decision until the sticks were right there in front of me.

I'd take the 10 year-old opus... no questions asked.

I like my cubans fresh.

I never tasted any opus with age (although I've got a few resting with a year or so on them) so I cannot say. I have smoked a 98 RyJ Churchill and a 98 Partagas Lusi' and along with a few others for 00 and 01 that I've found to be outstanding.

Smoked a 4 year old H Upman corona mejor A/T last night along with a 3 year vsg enchantment now when I first picked the Upmans up they were good but last night they were bland and on a scale of one to ten scored a three compared to the VSG's 9. So as Wilkey stated it's a matter of preference and taste. Yes cubans are the quintessential smokers delight but in many cases there are better smokes depending on the brand. Just mt .02

BS,

You certain they were real?

also, 1999-2001/2 was a very poor quality period for Habanos cigars.

Please don't take this as being a demeaning statement; but, I find this whole argument/thread/question pointless and arbitrary. To me it's exactly like asking, "What do you like better - apples or oranges". Of course, some will say apples and some will say oranges and nothing will really have been said of any value. It's just personal opinions which everyone has.

I know I could have held my tongue as I usually do. There have been so many of these threads lately I just couldn't hold it in this time.

So sue me :D

Oh, and I like Brazilian! ;) But if Wilkey ever publishes his reviews I may eventually like Costa Rican!

we are comparing tobacco to tobacco, same product, like comparing an orange from California to one from Florida.

Hi every one
I was wondering what your opinions on Cubans vs Others.
I have been smoking Cubans for over 20 years and have just (12 months ago) started on "Other" cigars.
IMHO I feel that the Nicaraguan, Dominican, Honduran Brands I have tried have been a much nicer smoke for me.Although I have tried some "Others" that I refused to smoke,on the whole I think they are very good cigars.
The only down side I have found on "Others" so far is that some of the quality control is sadly lacking on the wrapper,(small patches and tears).
An example of good "Others" would have to be Padron's, an unreal smoke for the money.

There's no real point in such a comparison... there are Cuban cigars you'll like, and ones you won't. There are cigars from places other than Cuba that you will like, and some you won't.

Compare brands, not places of origin.

That sums it up nicely. Cuban vs. non-Cuban is misguided and pointless.

Oh hell, everyone knows that California oranges are way better than Florida oranges anyday.

I don't think it is pointless or misguided to ask this question,There is obviously a lot of feeling and opinion to this topic and I think it is good to get so many replies.
As far as comparing brands go.............give me some comparisons..........
As Cuban cigars are easier to get in this country than "others"(and I certainly do not mean to tar all "Others" with the same brush)I have tried many different brands of Cubans and not very many "Others".
I was simply wondering what a few seasoned smokers thought about comparisons.
I also think if you are going to compare them to fruit grown in different regions there must be huge differences to them
And on that note I am going to smoke a large Cohiba (Cuban).
