Blind leading the Blind Pass - pt. 2

You say join a pass before hosting one. With that said all I can say is "where are they?".

Why wait for a pass to come along in hopes to be a part of something this board was made up of.

I see your thoughts but have to disagree with them.

Like JaeWing said. Its not getting better ones but a different variety. If thats his intentions then I still see no wrong doing. I havent tried most of the ones on his list and would like to diverisfy my selection as well.

To all those appose thats fine, but dont hammer this man for wanting to be a part of this BB. And like I said why wait for someone to host it if your willing to do it yourself. The first person to host a Pass didnt learn from anyone else.

Just my .02

DM,

There are no passes currently b/c it's the dead of summer. Are you going to risk shipping cigars from state to state during the 100 degree summer? If you've been here long enough, you will know that the number of passes decreases as the weather warms up.

You can disagree, that's your right.

You don't see anything wrong w/ him wanting better cigars then he puts in his pass? If he is wanting to try different ones, fine. If he is wanting to get better ones in return, again, that's not what this site is about. Passes are a great way for people to try different cigars. They are not however, a way for a new guy to get better cigars.

Nobody is hammering him for wanting to be a part of this board. I just think he is going about it too quickly. If he truly wants to become a part of this board, great. He needs to create relationships, do trades, get to know people, join in other then to do his pass. It's not that hard.

I'm in no way a FOG, nor do I pretend to be. I've been here for over a year, and regret not finding this place sooner. I've learned tons of info, participated in passes, done numerous trades and have become friends w/ several people on this board. By all means, he has every right to do this pass and you have every right to participate. I disagree with it, but like you, I am entitled to my opinion.

It's not the fact that people will lose anything.  It's the fact that the "host" has never participated in any previous passes.  It's a risk b/c it might not get ran correctly, the Puts/Takes will be skewed, etc.  I'm not saying not to join.  I understand that everyone has to start somewhere, but it's usually participating in a pass before actually running one.

It just seems to me that he is sending out the only sticks he has and is hoping for better ones in return.  That's not what passing is all about.

Of couse we all join with that thought in mind. As for him getting "better" sticks in return . . . read the original idea behind this pass. Also, if we put equivalent sticks in for what is taken out then the host should not be getting "better" ones (higher value) but merely "different" smokes than he already has. I don't think he is doing anything here but trying to be a part of CigarPass. Nobody joining this pass shoudl be expecting, when the box comes to them, to find an Opus, Anejo or ISOM nor are they planning to put one either. I consider this pass an opportunity to sample a couple mid-range brands that maybe I have not tried.

Don't join if you think he is trying to scam us out of our smokes. I happen to like many of the ones he has in the line-up and have a few to contribute. I also think this is a good way for a newbie (like our host) to extend the range of his humidor (not in quantity or quality but rather selection) while at the same time being a positive contribution to this board.

I am going to start this off by saying if this comes out the wrong way I am sure one of the FOGs will let us(me) know...that being said....

Agreeing with Jason here I think he may be trying to increase the selection in his Humi. This is the main reason I am up for it and honestly it gives me a chance to be in a pass that is not a high end pass or something that I may not have the stock on hand right away to do my puts/takes. I get to try a few new sticks and make a few friends in the process. Should anyone join with other expectations they will most likely be a tad disappointed.

"What do you have to lose?" is the main question everyone has to ask, well financially nothing is the right answer, but it is not all about the cost of the pass or even the cigars in the pass. This board was built and remains the best around due to the FOGs that keep it going. Those of us NEWBs that show up are welcomed with open arms into the CP family, we are given all the information we need to become a true BOTL and asset to this and other boards(but honestly why go anywhere but home...CP  ). Something or someone breaks the trust that is established on this board the fogs have taken care of it in the past and will take care of it in the future....IF things were handled the right way(trust me look at some of the older post(s) dont piss with those old bastids they get evil without the viagra :p ).

NOW..."What do I have to lose?" should be the question every newb should be asking with this and every pass you take on that may be questionable. This pass being offered by a person newer than any of us makes it fairly obvious that anyone who jumps onboard is taking the risk of being in a pass that doesn't perform as expected but you can bet will be watched closely. It may make it tougher to get in other passes down the road unless you follow every rule to the T, Document everything you do, pay the extra cash for the DC and possibly signature, Label your Puts/takes properly then check and double check those puts and box contents, get that box out fast, and CYA in every possible way you can.(I personally will be using the camera just as BD has above).

I would not expect a FOG to jump in and get involved if it does go south(even though I am fairly sure at least one of them would), THEY have made this board what it is today and us newbs to the board get to enjoy the great place they maintain. But we were all aware of the stats on this pass beforehand.

Sorry for the rant but the "what do you have to lose" question gets me on this one because in my opinion WE have a great place that I want to be a part of for a long time and I, personally, DO NOT want to lose that and I am sure most of you don't either...so THAT is what WE have to lose.

NOW that the question is answered.....

Sign up for the damn pass :D :p

just my fiddy cent :whistling:

EDIT: Spelling and stuff :whistling:

bfreebern,

I agree with you that not everyone will agree with his move. Sure I too agree with it being awful quick upon coming aboard but then again the risk's are the same. Heat of the summer. I agree during the summer passes will slow down but summer in Florida is almost year round.

Not too continue an arguement but just incase you thought I said that he wanted better smokes I did not. I said different smokes. Sure his selection is limited but you have to start somewhere.

Exactly and I just picked up a box of White Owls this morning so I could be prepared when the box hits the door :p

And thanks DM

You got it BGarv3

BTW, bfreebern was a big asset to my first pass. I'd have tough time hosting or being a member of any pass that didn't have the support of FOG's and established members. I have seen what can happen and it isn't pretty :0

How should I start this ... Well, we now have 6 in the line up for this pass. Over half way there; ROCK ON!!!

As it can be plainly seen from previous posts, we Newbies are under a high level of scrutiny. Obviously there have been ppl before us that have left a bad taste in some people's mouths. (me thinks, maybe they are People of the Dog Rocket Clan?:p) However, IMNSHO I believe that you can only truely assess one's integrity through the actions of that individual.

That being said, Welcome to the pass Fyodor and Shibumi. Since this is your first pass as well as mine, all I ask is that you help to vindicate the Newbie through your actions. And the best way to do that is through communication. So, make sure to post in this thread your puts, your story behind the puts (mine will come by the time the list is filled), and the tracking number when you send off the pass (hopefully in an expeditious manner). ... And of course, Welcome to this pass Diesel Grinch!

If you don't think you can follow those guidelines, feel free to request to be removed from the pass list. But these were things already posted, and from your request I take it you have already agreed to do your best in these areas. :D

Dude .. how the bleepidy blank do you have any idea what is in my humidor. Grr, growl, hiss. If you read what I posted, instead of interpreting something other than what was posted, it specifically states:

Worst case, I lose my cigars. Best case, I get back some different cigars to try. But like I said, I don't have the $$ to start on the Newbie Trade, but I do have some extra smokes. So the pass seems like the best option.

..different.. different does not mean better. This thread was pinned for a reason. And yes, I did read it. AND I AGREE W/ IT.

Moving right along. Thanks for the heads up on the weather.

I am putting a little humidifier out of my little portable humidor into the tubidor to help w/ humidity, temp, etc. The hygrometer did read 83 humidity, so I closed it a little and this afternoon it read a beautiful 71. I plan on sending this w/ the tubidor, but it isn't an option for the takes. :) I really do need it back. But for all in the pass, it seems like it needs to be open just about .5 - 1 mm when looking at the large hole.

So ... there are only 4 more spots needed. Jump right in, the water is warm.

Thanks,
- C

I see there has been an updated pic added to the original post. I only have one suggestion and that is to grab some of those little "singles bags" and place all the smokes in them and include extras for the puts to go back in.(Just in case no one likes my White Owl Cherry(s) or DM's Phillies) :whistling:

As for the Box contents....

1. Have you made up a pass content sheet(listing all the cigars and including extra spaces for everyone to list their puts)?

2. Are you going to be making the shipping labels up for everyone and placing in the box or are we going to do it on our end(let everyone know so they can plan in advance and have them readily available)? They are free at the P.O. Get them early/Get them Often NO BOTL should be without!!

3. Once the player list is finalized with Names Addresses and Pass Order....print it off and place in the box as well. This way there is NO QUESTION as to where it goes should someone lose internet connectivity or be doing their puts/takes at work or away from home. Do this weather you print the labels for everyone or not.

4. If it were my pass I would even throw in a writing utensil(Sharpie), a small roll of packing tape, and 10 Shipping Labels(Just to be safe). The way I see it the cost and weight of the additional supplies(if any) would be made up in the preparation of the pass for everyone involved and hopefully eliminate the use of 200mph tape.

Just a few ideas that I have jotted down for whenever I decided to host my first box pass. These ideas come from reading MANY of the successful and failed passes from the Completed Pass Threads and from my experience so far with these fine folks around here in trades.

Cory, I'd still like to get together this weekend to meet you and have a smoke. I'm just trying to see if Sat or Sun would be better. Do you have a preference, or a good time for either day? I'd like for us to get together with KiltedCraftsman so you can meet him also. Just PM me with your thoughts.

Anyway, if you'd like, we can discuss the pass then and I can lend my assistance with ideas/suggestions/etc. I'm no FOG, but I've participated in a few passes. I can also help set up the pass order (which is critical) and help monitor the pass while it's on the road if you'd like. I don't want to intrude on your pass, so let me know if I'm outta line. I'm just offering my help.

I think it's great that this pass is getting up and running, even if it is summer. After all, this is Cigar Pass, right?

Steve Hawk,

What a guy! Thanks Steve. See you at poker!

Brad

Let me know when you come to Florida.

Blue,

I just got done doing the same thing you are trying to do (starting a pass having never been in one before). My pass just got done today and it went great. The guys in my pass were all awesome. It's not rocket science starting a pass, so no one should have any worries. If you want any tips let me know, the key is organization.

I will also be glad to participate in your pass if you will have me.

BGarv3, Thanks for all the input. :)

"Singles bags"? Not sure I know of them. I'll swing by a local cigar shop and see if they have anything like that. I don't want to put all the cigars in baggies or else there would be no point of putting in the humidifier. But I agree w/ putting the flavored smokes into baggies. (You know, I have never tried a flavored cigar).

I will put a content and contact sheet in there. Good idea about the extra lines. I might even add a spot where ppl can put their nick to show they took X.

That is a great idea. I went to the PO today and grabbed 13. I'll make them out and stick them in the box. :)

I will probably just do the three extras and a sharpie. I don't even know if I have packing tape. I usually just get them to tape it at the post office when I drop it off.

SteveHawk and Peekay, or anyone else for that matter, feel free to send me some helpful hints. I don't pretend to know everything or even have the best ways to do it. But I would like to see everyone have fun in the process. So if the suggestions will help us all, please send `em. :)

So, w/ Peekay, that makes 7. :D :whistling: :D Three more and we are off to the smoke track. I know DevilsMilk is itching to get this started. So jump on so this train can start a rollin. :)

the single baggies just make it easier to identify what is what. take look at some of the older passes and you will see where they come in useful. I currently do not have any buy MAYBE if a FOG around has some they can get them out to one of us in the pass and we can get it straight.(I did place an oder from the company given in an earlier thread but have NOT received them yet). IF you really want a flavored let me know I will get you a Teten(I hear I have a few coming hehehe but I was saving them for those that are "special" to me the d@mn bums)

Seriously I will make one of my puts a Kaluha(tried one this afternoon and not my thing but hey to each their own) and have another!

and there are always the White Owls or Phillies Choc. Dm and I promised!!
