Barry Bonds

A few of the headlines about 756.

New York Post: BIG SH*T
New York Daily News: DEATH OF A RECORD and KING OF SHAME
Boston Herald: KING CON
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: A key stroke

I like the Post headline best; you can read it a few ways. The MJS is lame; I guess they were trying to be cute with the asterisk be a "key stroke'?

You know it's true that guys like Ty Cobb and Ted Williams were known to be as*holes but they were not cheaters. Barry Bonds is an as*hole but he is also a cheater. True, he's never tested positive for steroid use but he HAS admitted to using them with regards to the BALCO hearings. He just claimed he "didn't know they were steroids when he was taking them". Now I find it quite rediculous that a professional athlete would take any substance without fully knowing exactly what it is. Was Barry a great player before the steriod use? Yes he was. But consider this, prior to his relationship with BALCO he had a career slugging percentage of .569 over 15 years and was hiting homeruns at a rate of 1 every 15 ABs. Then at age 37, after an extensive training program with BALCO, his slugging percentage over the following 4 years jumped to .805 and he began hitting homeruns at a rate of 1 every 7.85 ABs. I'm not disputing the fact that Barry is a talented athlete but you cannot dispute the fact that he is a CHEATER.

May he rot in hell.
I take exception to this statement. I'm old enough to remember him and saw his last at bat a home run. Ty Cobb was more than an asshole. He was a bigoted, drunken, gun waving, paranoid jerk. If he can be in the hall of fame anyone can. Ted Williams was one of the few men who was great at three things. Hitting a baseball, flying a fighter plane and casting a fly. He may have had a piss poor relationship with the Boston media, but Williams was a true American hero who gave up the best years of his life for his country. If he had had those years that he served with the Navy and the Marines, I don't think we'd be having this conversation.

Doc.

Doc.

Just wait 'til they unfreeze and reattach his head to a robot.

You could be right Doc 6 years of 36-42 homers would add another 240 or so to his 521. It'd be close.

Tell that to Pete Rose.

Rose commited the unforgivable sin. He bet on baseball. Just ask Shoeless Joe Jackson, who by the way, Ted lobbied hard to get into the hall, and is indeed in Williams' Hitters Hall of fame.Linky

Doc

You need to read up on your baseball history. Ty was known for sharpening his spikes so he could break up double plays, just for one example. I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Williams took uppers too since that was the drug of the day in his era.

IDK man, if he simply bet and didn't fix anything it was a poor choice yes, but comparable to what there doing these days hardly something to ban the man from the hall of fame for. Imo he's paid his dues.

He paid his dues coming up. The question now is whether he's paid his penance and whether or not that figures into the decision on whether or not to induct.

Wilkey

Last I recall, Ty Cobb was a helluva player, but an asshole. So you in part blame Bonds' relationship with the media? That's funny to me.

There's alot more than just his relationship w/ the media, he's a ass, been one along time, it's pretty well documented.

Take that back. D*ckhead seems to be more appropriate.

Thank god we don't judge all athletes by their attitudes. Just Barry.

We'd have a lot less people in the Hall of Fame.

I'm not old enough to have seen Williams play, but I did meet him twice, 3 years apart. The second time he remembered who I was and the conversation we had been involved in the first time we had met. He was a gentleman and an all around nice man. He was very willing to entertain us youngsters with stories about baseball, fishing, and life in general. He even signed stuff for us. I don't really know how he was when he was playing, but he was far from an asshole when I met him.

Like Doc says, Ted Williams is an American hero who deserves any and all accolades bestowed upon him. To even put him in the same conversation as Bonds and a piece of work like Ty Cobb is insulting.
