Black Widow encounter

So I'm out front planting wax leaf privet's. As I'm done placing the plants into their new home, I'm walking up to the garage carrying the pots they came in when all of a sudden I feel something crawling on my hand. I look down and notice a rather large widow crawling around the backside of my left hand. I instinctively swat it with my other hand and it quickly fell to the floor. To my surprise, it was a black widow. We have a lot of them around here, however this is the first time I've had one crawl on me (at least that I know of).

So far no muscle cramps, so I think I'm fine. :D

If you got bit you would know right away. They are in every valve box I open all summer long!

Holy schnit Rod....I would have freaked out like a girly wuss and been jumping around screaming. LOL. I hate big nasty spiders!

I've been bitten by one of them before, and it knocks you on your ass for a couple days, but an adult male really doesn't have too much to worry about. The local paper just ran an article about Brown Widows taking over in SoCal, and causing there to be fewer and fewer Black Widows.

Yes! They love those areas. As a young fella, I ran a landscape / irrigation crew. Little buggers were always in there,

Gavin, do you mean Brown Recluse? Never seen a brown widow. I had a bunch of black widows all over my yard, hit them hard and they're gone now. Even in Hawaii!

We have quite a few black widows around. I need to spray the backyard again, however they mainly hang out in dark/moist areas. The brown recluse is the mother of all spiders; limbs fall off when they bite if not treated quickly.

I keep on trying to get someone out here to spray! I have way to many of the brown ones around! I hate it! I have not seen a widow yet, but have killed my fair share of the recluse and hobo's.

I have no issue with spiders growing up in the mid west...but when tehy can kill you it creeps me out big time!

ahh, just gives me the chills

Nope, a Brown Widow. Same hourglass on the abdomen, but brown bodies. Their venom is more powerful than a Black Widow's, but they inject a lot less of it, making them ultimately a lot less dangerous. I'll try to find a picture.

Alright! So I offically stumbled upon the worst thread ever!!! Haha And Rod you are correct...brown recluses are the spawn of hell. We recently (within the last 10 years) started having them in alaska thanks to tourists and warmer climate...now they thrive up here in the summers and move indoors in the winters. Alaskan winters are awful because your in home spider encounters go up like a bazillion percent. In fact I have a wicked bite on my elbow right now and honestly...I think I got bit by a spider that makes limbs grow back because my second elbow is shaping along quite nicely ;) I'm about to bomb my house however cuz we spotted a recluse in my shed last week and that bad boy IS NOT moving into my home...no way

I'm very arachnophobic and if I saw a black widow crawling on my hand, I would have simply shat myself.

Wow... that would have been a scary encounter. One of the great things about the Winnipeg climate is we don't get the same kind of creepy crawly and bitey bugs and critters that some of the warmer-year-round areas. Not too much is poisonous around here, at least not to the degree of widows and such.

Yuck, not digging this thread :)

I have quite a bit of spiders at my new house, I'm just hoping for the cold weather to come along and put them away for the season.....though maybe that means they'll run for cover inside the house.

Remind me never to move to Alaska. It's the opposite here. Spiders and all creepy crawlies are much more active during the summer and go away during the winter. Yet another reason I prefer winter. Winter rules, summer drools.
