Would like some opinions

Personnally - I'd buy the Magnum and get a Jeep later.

1) Don't forget with the Magnum...you'll prolly get around 16mpg around town....w/o the extra burn outs!
2) Don't forget to figure in cost of insurance and taxes!!!
3) They won't be making them after 2008 - from what I'm hearing.
 
I would hold onto the Jeep, since you said it doesnt cost you thing. Let it go unregistered/uninsured until you can afford it. Get the Magum. That is such a great vehicle for a college guy. Lots of room for friends for road trips. Plus the fuel encomy will help out too. With gas prices the way they are you are going to save a bundle right there.
 
yeah ill play devil here with jaydee, i have a custom honda civic that basically sits all winter because it doesnt like snow and nyc potholes in the winter. it comes out in the summer and pretty much just the weekends but its my first car that i paid for and built. no matter what extra money it would get me if i sold it i wont because its my baby. if your invested in the jeep keep it. if you keep it unregistered and uninsured you just need to turn it on every so often to keep the fluids going and do all the neccessary things to store it.
 
i made the mistake of selling my baby in college, i used the funds to pay for COLLEGE, bleh :(

she was 1965 Ford Mustang that i bought with my birthday/christmas money i had saved up when i was 12. I then spent the next 4-5 years restoring her. By my senior year in high school she was cherry. i still kick myself to this day for selling her. i should have just taken the loans on the chin, but like someone said already if it was meant for me to have one, someday i will have another chance at one.
 
The best advice has been given: Sell the Jeep and buy a small fuel efficient vehicle to get you through college.

You are a college student. You are still dependent on your parents to get you through the year financially. You are in absolutely zero position to own two vehicles, especially when one of the two vehicles isn't really practical at all. Life is tough, college life is tough, there's no use making it tougher by taking on financial burdens that are unnecessary just because you want a nice newer car. The Magnum may end up paid for, but the insurance and other costs associated with it are going to come back to you eventually.

You've got plenty of time to be cool when you can afford it: after you graduate, get out on your own, and get your finances in order. It's not realistic to think you can have it all while you are a college student that still depends on his parents financially. Do what makes sense, do what is responsible, and do what you have to do to get through college with as little debt and hardship as possible. If you do that, you'll be in a much better position than most of your friends will likely be in once they graduate under a pile of debt. You'll be able to afford to have toys and all kinds of fun then as long as you avoid the typical college student mistakes now. I speak from experience here. I made those mistakes.

Besides, you'll impress the hell out of your parents.

In the end you'll do whatever you want. People always do.

(I wish I sounded like my father here, unfortunately, I was never given this type of guidance.)

I just want to reiterate, there's 2 options here: Magnum or jeep.

I'm not buying something else, period.

Fuel economy is not that big a deal, I rate the jeep in "Smiles per gallon" anyways. I'm happy as a clam when driving it, other than the lack of AC. The only reason I consider getting rid of it is pretty much because I have an opportunity for a straight trade with the magnum, which is worth way more than the jeep.

I'm sorry if I sound like I'm ignoring advice, I'm not, I've taken in everything I read, but I'm just not going to buy a 3rd car. It's magnum or keep the jeep.

Insurance will most likely be way more because its new and it's a muscle car.

Given this then I would keep the Jeep. You should suffer a little, it's good for the soul. :)
 
yeah just keep the jeep. who needs AC anyway. my dad used to say he has 2/55 AC
2 windows open at 55mph you at least get to take the whole top off. just get the leather top cover to block out the direct sunlight
 
Going uninsured and unregistered is a massive mistake that could cost you more in the long run. If you make that choice and something happens, it's karma's way of coming back and kicking you in your irresponsible ass!

That said, everything I've read, along with the photos, your answer is clear: keep the jeep. Does it suck without AC? Sure. But you will regret getting rid of a car you love.

It doesn't sound like you "love" the Magnum -- except for the "deal" you're getting. My guess is that the extra $$ value you gain from the Magnum will be unimportant with the regret you'll harbor every beautiful day you could be 4-wheeling.

I got rid of a 1987 Toyota 4-Runner (not by choice -- an idiot t-boned me) and replaced it with a Volvo. Great car. The "right" and "safe" choice. But tons of regret until I got my Special Edition FJ Cruiser last year. Now I am happy again.

So don't get caught in the dollars and cents. A car is as much as an emotional choice than anything we ever do in life. Ditch the Magnum, keep the Jeep, and sweat a little bit in the Vegas summer. You'll be happier.
 
  • Keep the Jeep.
  • Parent's sell or trade in Magnum R/T- they make twice the $$$ that you would pay them.
  • Work full time all summer to save money to put towards paying your rent during the school year.

You : Same vehicle. No increase in insurance and the inevitable speeding ticket(s) from driving a much more powerful vehicle.
Parents : Recoup an extra $7K-$8K on the car they've paid for, plus they don't have the burden of paying your rent for 9 months ( $500-$900 a month?)

Learn to live financially responsible now, not later.
 
From all I've read in this post, you've had your mind made up since the beginning. You're going to keep the jeep because it's fun. Good for you. Reality is going to kick you in the nuts in a few years anyway, might as well do what you want now while you have little responsibility.

jeep has full top, full doors windows etc.

Issue lies ion that it's a 2.5l 4 cylinder, sitting on 32" tires, with 4.10 gears. I cant go 65 on an inclined highway, it's slow as crap around town too...

Adding AC to that engine will zap what little power it has and leave me goin' 45 on the highway.

Also, by a "toy" jeep after the magnum I'm talkin' about old CJ, something that's only a few grand. And Also understand that I don't have a family or a wife or anything, and don't plan on it in the next year or 3, but things could change haha.

I love the jeep, it;'s my main source of transportation, it's been fun and reliable but it's just so impractical. slow ass 4 cylinder that gets 16 miles per gallon, I can only put 3 other people, with NO cargo in it, or 1 person with some cargo, it's horribly loud on the highway, handles like crap, stops hard, etc. But I love it, it's a away of life, and it has given me some incredible times.

I suppose there are times when you need to be realistic and down to earth. Sure, I could keep the jeep, but when is the opportunity to buy a luxury muscle car at less than half it's value going to come around again, vs. the opportunity to buy any given jeep? I need to put sentimental value aside and look at what's best financially and practically I suppose. It's just really hard to do.

First off who puts 32" tires with 4.10 gearing on a 4 banger????

Drop the tires back to standard size and change the gearing back to 3.73 or higher. This will increase your MPG and is cheaper fix. On the AC problem roll the windows down and drive faster. Learn to deal with it.

If you need AC hit the junk yard and add it on.

Aight dude...Enough. Your ONLY option is to keep the damn car that you have! Suck it up not having A/C. If you love your car so much, and the only thing it is missing is A/C and cargo room..then there is no discussion here. Save yourself THOUSANDS and possibly keep from going in debt, for a stupid car? btw - magnum...not that cool. I'd rather have money to take my GF out, smoke great cigars, and go on trips. Oh and I also enjoy saving. Also, whats to say that the magnum wont need repairs at all down the line..you never know...i'm about ot be smacked in the nuts by a bill to replace a stupid window motor...I mean cmon stupid fucking cars. lol.

Dude, I was harsh b/c I want you to realize there is no discussion here. The magnum and jeep are just pieces of metal that could any day get ruined (heaven forbid). Keep what you have, and enjoy everything that the Jeep gives you. It's pretty damn clear to me that you're obsessed w/ it...you have freakin 1,000 pictures of your car! :laugh:

Take care bro and just dress accordingly in your Jeep this summer :) you'll be okay. Also, invest in some Old Spice wet towels
 
I spent two summers in Vegas in a Honda with no AC or a motorcycle. It's not fun, but it's not that bad.

Suck it up and keep the Jeep.
 
Well, thanks guys. Obviously my mind isn't made up but I think I know my decision. There's a while to think about all this, about a month, but I'm pretty sure of my situation.

Thanks again, I kinda consider this situation closed for a few reasons. It seems to be full of a few suggestions that are not going to happen, and I don't really wanna get into that.

So, my friends, I thank you for the advice, and have taken it to heart, as I said before, a lot of good perspectives I wouldn't have gotten on my own, or from my peers here.

OH, and who puts 32's on 4.10's with a 4cyl? The kid who cannot afford a 6cyl, doesn't want to bust the D35 in a 6 cyl, Puts on 32's instead of 33's to protect the D35 in his 4cyl, which came with 4.10 gears from the factory, and who wants a somewhat street friendly jeep that can keep up with the big boy's off road, that's who. :-) Don't question the setup I've built on the jeep, that is not in question.
