Wineador Build #2

Hey everyone its been a while since I have been around. So for that sorry. I didn't forget about everyone here, I have just been super busy with work and family. So since I have been gone my 1st little wineador just was not cutting it anymore. SO what does one do? Build a bigger and better one. So that is just what I did. I will below post a bunch of pictures of the build with some of the info on the design and so on.
 
 
1st I picked up this brand new wine cooler Not sure what brand it is but its MINT. A friend of the family is a carpenter. He also owns a saw mill ex.... So I did some reading.... WHY SPANISH CEDAR? is Any Cedar OK? What I found was although Spanish Cedar always ranked #1 there was also American Cedar at the number 2 spot, followed by Honduran Mahogany. So I told my buddy what I needed. He happened to have cut down a NICE american cedar and ran it through his saw mill last year. It has been drying out since then. He said it was perfect for working with. So I googled up some pictures of what I liked and did not like and gave him my ideas. He then created me exactly what I was looking for! And he to is a cigar smoker and was extremely excited to be a part of this build and charged me nothing! Does not get much better then that now does it?!?! 
 
So now I have my unit. I have my draws and my shelves. What else do I need???? I picked up these 2 Green Led 120mm computer fans. Then I picked up some Green LED light strips to place on the door for some custom flash! So I started thinking...... Shit I went this far why not grab a Fan controller? So I picked up a 4 fan controller. Yes I know I only have 2 fans. But there is now room for upgrade. So what I have done was wired 2 fans to 2 knobs. and wired my LED lights to my 3rd knob, this allows me to dim the lights from the fan controller.
 
I was about to mount the fans directly to the bottom of the unit, when I thought I dont want to drill holes in the bottom of the unit, why not have my buddy just cut me another piece of cedar? So thats what he did, and I had him make 4 little legs so that there was air flow under the platform. This also allowed me to mount the fan controller under the board and run fan wires through and down where they would not be seen when you look in the unit.
 
On the the internals. I was going to use a 12v adapter spliced into the controller to power the fans and lights, but I did not want to have 2 power plugs coming out the back. So what I did was removed the back panel and mounted a surge protector on the inside. From here I still used a 12v adapter spliced into the fan controller, but this also allowed me to plug the unit into it. and snake the surge plug out the existing unit slot. Now I plug in the surge and we have power throughout.
 
Now the last part of the build is not done yet. But I have about 8lbs of humi beads NO I AM NOT USING ALL 8lbs hahaha, I was thinking about starting with about 1lb. To see how it reacts to the unit cooling on and off. I assume the more beads the more stable the RH will stay as the unit cools? So I need to still plug the condensation hole on the unit that leads out the back into a drip tray. The reason for this is I don't want any outside environment sneaking in, and not to mention the unit doesnt drain perfect anyway it usually ends up on the base of the unit. a NO GO when there is wood, and electrical there. So my thoughts here are (seen this online but none very nicely done yet) I am going to create some sort of slide, funnel if you will that mounts under the cooler units to allow the condensation to slide down it and directly into either a container or into a container containing beads. (self dehydration?) After coming off the thermo unit I would have to also assume it is some what distilled or untainted at this point so this should be ok?
 
 
Back to the fans. The fans are mounted on plastic risers. I have my fans on 24/7. I also as in my first wineador have them blowing downward. I feel that this way there is no direct air flow on to my cigars, and still creates air movement with out drying anything out. I mounted them on the front of my bottom shelf so that there was room behind them to make the slide for the condensation and a catch can. ( or at least this is my hope.)
 
I also just because, Had a boveda 4 pack Spanish cedar holder. I mounted this to the inside TOP of the unit I can toss in 4 boveda packs if needed or for good measure. If it gets in my way at any point its magnetic and can be removed.

Have not reintroduced all of my cigars yet, slowly keeping a eye on it making sure its running smooth. More photo's to come.

Isn't American cedar the same as red cedar?
If it is from what I've been reading the smell is a lot stronger than Spanish cedar...supposedly...
When I got my humidor and opened the lid for the first time the cedar smell nearly made me high.
And Cheap Humidors swears it's Spanish cedar.
 
I'm actually using red cedar that's been wiped down with Captain Morgan (my "penalty box") for  my less than stellar cigars La Perla Habana WIDE & Gurkha Titan so far.
The way I see it some extra wood flavor and smell certainly couldn't make these sticks any worse

Red or American cedar is an aromatic. This could potentially flavor all your cigars where they taste only of cedar. Spanish cedar or Honduran mahogany is suggested to use for cigar humidors.

Hate to tell you this, but you're going to have problems with red cedar.  There's a reason why all humidors and cigar boxes are made of Spanish cedar.  Like C said, it's going to negatively impact the flavor of your cigars.

Red cedar will actually take the moisture out of your smokes. Looks cool, but this is not going to end well if you continue down this path.

I dont know. You are correct should of asked. I did a few google searches and didnt seem to be a issue. So whats the worse thats going to happen? Overpowering cedar flavor? or hard RH maintenance? As of right now it holds nicely at 68% and the cedar is dominant but not over powering.

Every cigar is going to taste exactly the same - like you are smoking a split of American red cedar.

god damnit. LOL I always step on my own dick. Im going to remove most of my cigars then, Keep them in my secondary. And leave a few that I have allot of, and that I have a taste for. And smoke them in a few weeks and see what has happened to the profile. Thanks for the heads up!

Jeff, nice build brother and give you props on creativity. However, as much as it might be a pain in the arse to remove that red cedar and redo, it's probably your best option long term before it's too late.
