I received my CD from Mircosoft today, got a couple of questions before I install.

I'm concerned about the various warnings about some programs that aren't compatible with SP2. Mainly, is this Gates blocking out competitor's software?

I really don't want to install this if it going to cause a bunch of problems. With MaCafee suite and a couple of spyware programs I run I'm not having any problems for now.

I guess the main question is it necessary to install SP2?

I haven't run into any problems so far at work or home with SP2 but I use Trend Micro for anti-virus at home. As with anything, they can't test all possible combos so there could be problems. If you keep up on your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, don't open strange email and don't dig into the fringes of the internet I guess you could skip the upgrade without any problem.

I had a problem with connecting with Verizon DSL. Couldn't/Wouldn't connect. Like its said above, keep your virus and firewall up to date and you'll be fine.

There is absolutely no compelling reason to apply it at this point. Keep up to date with windows update and wait another six months to a year until they find and fix the major problems with SP2.

I have updated my XP to SP2 and have no problems. It was a little slower at first, especially booting up, but I have no issues now. I use Norton A/V and programs like ad-aware and Zone Alarm, and haven't had any issues at all.

Its not a problem.. You dont need the CD, just doing windows update will install it.
