Why ISOM's suck

I find these discussions about construction and quality control to be pretty ridiculous. I've had more than my fair share of moldy Fuentes, loosely rolled Padrons, and tight Tatuajes to say that NCs are no different than Cubans when it comes to QC. All handmade cigars no matter what country of origin are going to have their share of construction problems. I'd rather have any handmade Cuban, tightly rolled or otherwise, than the vast majority of overpriced, one-dimensional NC crap that is on the market today.

I'm shocked that this post hasn't caused an uproar. I can only imagine the reaction if a thread was started that said all NCs suck

Good lord, do we need to have this come up every few months?

Some Cuban cigars are exceptional. Some Cuban cigars are utterly horrible. EDITED TO ADD: Some are pretty good.

Some Non-Cuban cigars are exceptional. Some Non-Cuban cigars are utterly horrible. EDITED TO ADD: Some are pretty good.

Find what you like and smoke it for crying out loud.

I'm not shocked. What was there to reply to or discuss? I looked at the original post and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Was there a point or an argument to be made? I couldn't find it. If there was, it wasn't coherent. Frankly, there wasn't anything of substance to respond to. And so I didn't.

I've got nothing against Matty Vegas. I've never met him and I'm sure he's a nice guy, but this post was sorta like his other recent post in this forum, here. An earlier, shorter post here, however, posed a question and was to the point and elicited some topical responses.

This forum could use more traffic. But...

This is a topic that has already been debated over & over again....kinda rediculous. Don't think it would be such a "big deal" but I can see why it is, given the way the topic was started...i.e. the TITLE!!! "Why ISOM's suck" seems a bit harsh. You are probabaly offending (or at least criticizing) what/how people choose to smoke! And to me, that shouldn't be done!

Just smoke what you like.............

........................plus, that leaves more ISOM's for me (someone who actually like them!) :D

Exactly.

Despite the occasional construction issue, I find that I tend to have a slightly higher rate of enjoyment with CCs. Nevertheless, some of my top smokes have been NCs. Thus, I smoke both! :p

(I want to qualify this by saying not all of them suck...but a majority does. I had a fabulous ISOM with Alex GTP a few weeks back)

Spending good money on these smokes is difficult. Often you get a box and smoke one just to find out if the rest of the box is any good. And then when it is not, you say that classic phrase "Oh these need to rest for a year or whatever"

Well, I've yet to have a bad ISOM, so perhaps I'm jaded, but I don't really see your point. Is it that there are no good CC's, which is patently false; that construction is shoddy in Cuba, which is arguable; that the price-performance for CC's is below that for cigars originating in central america - well, true, but nobody's even trying to debate that. As far as I can tell, the peak of price-performance is around the $25 that it costs to buy a bundle of Consuegras, but no one's saying that a box over $25 is not worth buying.

X3 or 4 ;) I will add that most CCs will draw poorly if stored at the same RH as NCs. 60% or less is the optimum range for most CCs although some will smoke fine at 65%. Also, some do need age before they will "open up" and some are even poorly constructed, although this is less of a problem for CCs than for NCs, in my experience.

Yes, I know it's anal, but I really do have 12 years of cigar notes. It's a hobby. :D

Wow!!! I've only been here 10 months and I am way ahead on number of post
My friends laugh because I take notes on special NC's, glad to know I am not the only one.

Good to meet you welcome to CP, buy a bigger humi

This would be the thread to build the women's club :whistling:

The point is, life is subjective and as you pointed out above, so too are our tastes in cigars.

What I like is how the European Cigar Cult Journal almost always rates Cuban cigars.

0 - 5 stars

Why? Because as they also always usually state, that either you get a dog-rocket or mana from the gods and that it can happen from stick to stick in the same box.

Cuba has great cigars no doubt about it, but they still have HUGE QC issues across the board that you just don't find in 99% of comparable Non-Cuban cigars.

I do have to say that my last box purchase of RASCC that I didn't have one bad cigar out of the box, I was amazed and delighted to say the very least.

I have nothing against Wilkey, but he sure does seem to enjoy breaking my chops at regullar intervals. I am not sure what response you are trying to illict either. I often just post when I have a thought. I am sorry if the mechanics of my posting are not up to your lofty standards. Please be gentle with me in the future, I am just a Noob in sheeps clothing.

Matty,

I don't go sharpshooting for you, honest. I'm also pretty sure these are the only 2 or 3 times ever, that I've commented directly on your posts. But it's not just my standards for content or approach that are at issue, Matty. Several others have commented in like fashion in this thread.

Listen, I really do want to hear what folks have to say. And yeah, sometimes Cuban cigars suck. Sometimes NCs suck . But that's like saying the sun rises and the moon is in the sky. Let's just think a little about what we want to say and what sort of discussion we want to foster. A good post with good questions or comments that foster lively and topical responses would be a good use of Rod's bandwidth.

Matty, I hope that someday we'll have the opportunity to sit down at the Casa, smoke some OpusX, and ogle the eye candy. I've never smoked with a man and then walked away thinking "what an a$$hole" and you're not going to break that streak. Perhaps after I finish grad school and am gainfully employed. Until then, I will endeavor to be a bit less of a hardass, especially on you. Better for my ulcers, too. :D

Obviously you haven't bought and had to suffer through a full box of Ghurkas.

... I've never smoked with a man and then walked away thinking "what an a$hole" ...

You've been lucky. It hasn't happened for me with anyone from CP yet, but it's happened several times with others.

There's always an a-hole in every group, if I'm not seeing them, I generally think it must be me.

:)

Point taken, I could always make a trip up north, but my mommy wont let me go out after the streetlights come on and it is awfully far to take the 10 speed. Maybe once I finish my art degree and become a broke filmmaker you can buy me an OpusX at the Casa and I can get you a date with some of that eye candy. :)

Sure have... full box of Gurkha Legend Torpedoes and every single one of them rocked my socks. In fact I really can't remember ever having a poorly rolled Gurkha (well rolled and bad tasting are two different things), and while I don't go out of my way to buy them anymore, I have smoked a crap-load of them in the last 3 years or so.
