I'm new to this site (have been trolling about for a couple of weeks or so now) and as such have been reticent to post in the presence of folks who know so much. On this particular topic though I thought I would throw in. I currently have a collection of nearly 400 Padrons--about half of which are all 4 sizes of the 1926 line in maduro (except for an extra box of natural #6's); a third are 1964 maduros (torps and exclusivos), and a complete 100-count Millenium humidor. Before going further, I should say that I have never paid more than MSRP and now realize how lucky I am to be living in NYC with a choice of excellent and well conected Cigar stores from which to choose and make relationships. I really feel for the guys living in places with poor premium cigar coverage. In any event, here are my thoughts regarding these remarkable Padron lines, all of which are so perfectly constructed it is almost unbelieveable. In fact, in all the Padrons I have smoked I have encountered only 2 construction flaws, both the result of a big vein and both of which worked themself out during the course of the smoke.
IMO it is impossible to choose which are best.
The 1964 maduros (I've smoked most sizes but prefer the 2 I have in my collection best) are excellent go-to cigars. Sweet, strong (if you don't compare to the 1926s), incredibly flavorful. They start out with a lemon pepper tast, mellow slightly about a third of the way through (the Exclusivo seems to hold its taste a bit longer), and here the flavor becomes fuller and more complex, maybe a little fruit, certainly something that to this day makes me want to chew the smoke in my mouth. The last fourth of the gar can get hot if you smoke it too fast. I rarely put these out before my fingers are burning from the nub (unless bothered by the wife to do so.)
The 1926s are remarkable. Much fuller of strength and taste--strong black pepper, with a hint of sugary sweetness in the back. The #2 is my fav, followed by the #6 natural (the only Padron I prefer in natural BTW), the #1, #9, and #6 maddie. Again, almost impossible to stop smoking these.
The Milleniums are simply the best cigar I have ever smoked, combining the strength of the 1926s and the full, complex flavor of the 1964s. I smoke these only on the most special of occassions. This is pure heaven in construction, burn, aroma, appearance, draw and taste. Is there a flaw? Yes, they are no longer being made.
I would hold any of these mentioned above up to any Cuban, including the Cohiba Siglo VI, Diplimatico #2, and Monte #2, all of which I have in my humidor and enjoy smoking.
So after this lengthy tome, what's best? Firstly, only maduro (except for the 1926 #6). The 1964s for regular casual use; the 1926 for more serious time with friends/relatives, or following a scrumtous meal, or with a good scotch (or frankly whenever you can); the Millenium whenever you can find them.
