Mezcal de Lerendas - Pichumel If you have had another mezcal like it you must be a real connoisseur (I am not; I just was introduced to it by a bartender). It is nothing like other ones I have tried.

While in KC for the weekend, I had the good fortune of being able take a tour led by the company co-founder as well as the master distiller for the recently resurrected whiskey/bourbon brand J. Rieger & Co., which was the largest mail-order (250K+ customers nationwide) whiskey house in the United States prior to the onset of federal Prohibition in 1920. As part of it, I acquired a bottle of their single barrel, cask strength rye, which is a gem. Today I am enjoying their 10 Years of Cheers Anniversary Kansas City Whiskey, which tweaks their KC Whiskey recipe to include a touch of 20-year-old Williams & Humbert Palo Cortado sherry (something that was commonly done to whiskey pre-prohibition).

Two fun facts: the federal government wasn't going to let them call it whiskey because of the sherry; they had to point out to them that it was in their own regulations and had been since prior to Prohibition. No one at the fed knew.

Dave Pickerell helped them re-create their historic recipe (former Maker's Mark master distiller for 14 years, he also helped WhistlePig, George Washington distillery, Garrison Brothers get started among others).
