I enjoy all of the oddball events of the Olympics. I was skeptical that the trampoline was an appropriate sport, but after watching it, I take it all back. Pretty crazy stuff, and I can't believe how sharply they stop. Their knees must turn to jello when they get older.
I've always thought that some sort of combination snowboarding/pistol shooting event would be awesome for the winter games. Race down the mountain as fast as possible while shooting at targets on either side of the run. How cool would that be?
As long as BMX racing has been added, I'd like to see some halfpipe action added...maybe BMX and skateboard halfpipe.
I was watching some BMX late last night (don't know if it'll be tape delayed and aired tonight so I won't post any spoilers) and it was pretty crazy.
That being said, very few skateboarders are interested in having it added to the Olympics. Most will tell you that it isn't a sport in the truest sense of the word to begin with. Many (though there are exceptions) got into it because traditional sports along with scores, winning and losing, training, practice, routine, coaching, etc. didn't appeal to them, and to add all of those elements and then some in order to make it Olympified would foster great resentment and resistance among skateboarders.
It's likely going to have some sort of provisional status for the 2012 games in London. The International Cycling Union (that makes perfect sense to the IOC because both skateboards and bicycles have wheels) has taken over the formalities since there must be an official governing body before an event can be added, and there is no international skateboarding governing body--quite intentionally. It's all a money grab and I could ramble on for quite some time on the topic, but I'll nip it in the bud with the simple prediction that it will be a total flop with a great deal of sabotage coming from skateboarders themselves.
