What makes people smoke cigars?

Like many others - relaxation and self reflection. I love to sit on my back porch next to my pond with a good cigar in mouth and just gain a sense of peace and inner thoughts which often allude me throughout the day because I'm often so much on the go. I also like to smoke cigars because I gave up drinking a little over 2 years ago, and it serves as one of my few vices.

You hit that right on the head there Steve

My grandfather smoked cigars, my father smoked cigars. I grew up around it my whole life. As soon as I was able (12 or 13) I started stealing my old mans cigars and smoking them. They have always been a part of my life. Whether I'm around my smoking buddies or sitting here on my lanai alone surfing the web, I'm smoking my beloved cigars.

What makes me like to smoke cigars? ;)

I, like most here, smoke to relax...ponder...think about a lot or nothing. I have also always liked to smoke. As a former cigarette whore, I just like the act of smoking...so cigars are a less deadly way to enjoy smoking and still relax. Also like drinking wine...the way the flavor changes throughout the cigar, the differences of tobacco from different countries, different methods of rolling, shapes, sizes and what age can do to them. They are always different, no matter if it's from the same leaf and roller...just changes. That's why i like to smoke cigars.

It's a solitary moment for me to unwind and relax. Along with a good drink it can be downright transcendental

Wow! There is 2 parts to this answer.

One: Kind of the same as everybody else has stated with relaxation and flavor being important aspects. Flavor however is the biggest part of it for me. Chewie put it very well in comparing it to a good meal. I can't think of any food that is better than a good flavorful cigar. And believe me, I certainly enjoy my food!! (You probably knew that if you have met me or have seen my picture in the Taboada thread  )

Two: I am a recovering addict. Since I have been clean there has always been a "void" in my life. I am not one to follow the "program" to the tee so I would stil always find stuff to obsess about. But I would always change my obsessions. Cigars are my answer! They fill the void. Yes, I obsess about them but that has not changed for a long time now. Cigars fit in to my addictive personality perfectly. Consider a typical time for smoking a cigar and compare it to a time when I used to get stoned. Time spent relaxing doing "something" that I enjoy. Sometimes friends come over just to do that "something". That "something" takes about 2 hrs from beginning to end. But with cigars my brain isn't mad at me later. I can still live up to my responsibilities in life. My family no longer suffers from all the negative consequences of my using and lack of good judgement because my brain was impaired.

Now that might be a strange answer to some of you but it makes a lot of sense to me. And those are the reasons "WHY" I smoke cigars.

I'm glad that cigars has helped you, atuck.

That's one to go into the books!

smoking cigars are for me a chance to to release some pressure, while driving i get real tense, a cigar helps to calm me down. at work we can smoke, imagine that, so we can unwind with a stogie. imo, relaxation, is the reason for lighting up. ymmv!

I enjoy the whole aspect. The brotherhood, the flavors, the hour to relax, the fun in collecting.

Relaxing and time alone, unless the wife wants to talk to me about something while I am outside.

Nice comments everyone!

This is the first online forum I've belonged to.
And with the looks of it, I'll be here for a long while.

The one aspect I didn't comment on, which I saw others commenting on, is the community CP shares.

We may get some idiots and selfish bastards...but all in all, this forum brings a large group of cigar fanatics together.

I'm glad to be a part of this forum.

The quiet time alone to just relax and and let time pass me by. To just get away from the hussle and bussle of wife, kids, dog, work, school, traffic, etc.

At first, it seemed the thing to do since I was hanging out at a cigar bar. Once I started buying them for home, I noticed that I could get a little piece and relaxation from the Fiancee and kids. (Ever notice that once you light up, non-smokers go away?)

I have been able to reclaim my porch thanks (in large part) to the Fuente family. I should send them a thank-you card...

I smoke because it is relaxing.
I love finding out about what makes a good cigar. Maduros especially churchills or figurados.
I also recall my uncles and father burning one on special occasions and those quiet times where nobody really said much except there was a stronger connection between the cigar smokers. It also reminds me of my Uncle Pete and how his tavern smelled of cigars. I could go on and on. My nine year old decided when we go to Vegas for his 21st birthday he'll have a cigar with me. My wife likes the smell of a good cigar :D need I say more.

To me, it's all about stepping away from everything else. I'm a father of two young girls, and I have a fairly high-pressure job. When I smoke a cigar, I step away from all that awhile and just concentrate on the cigar, my thoughts for the day, my thoughts for the future, that sort of thing. If I'm smoking with other people, then it's about fellowship and camaraderie, doing something you enjoy in the company of other people.

I don't like to smoke if I'm rushed, or if I'm likely to be interupted, as it defeats the purpose.

After that, it's about making the most of that time: choosing a really good cigar that entertains me during this quiet time, something that allows me to deepen my appreciation for quality and subtelty, something that allows me to experience new flavors and expressions of the tobacco.
