I was smoking an Anejo...one of 2 that I have left :(

...and thought to myself, "What makes people smoke/like cigars?".

I'd like to hear from the BOTL's themselves...from the experienced ones and from the newbies.

Here's my take on it:

I like the complex flavors...the roasty, coffee, slightly sweet, creamy, full flavors.
No cigarette can give me that. While smoking the Anejo, I got this sensation of eating a brownie...that feeling of satisfaction you get when you savor eating your favorite meal.

I like the history behind cigars. How the market has changed...how Cubans are no longer "the" cigars.

And of course, the buzz.

usually, since I smoke alone (oh woe is me... ) it's the fact that for the 1-2 hours no one will bother me. I get to sit in my hammock, on my deck, in the woods, or wherever, and I don't have to worry about crap. Nothing- nada, zilch, zero. It's just me, the cigar and whatever I want to think about. Sometimes it's work I think about, sometimes it's the wife, sometimes it's why the hell does this cigar suck so bad?? I just get to sit there and ignore the world and it's just me me me. Except when Porter is with me, then it's him him him! Hes become such a cigar hound... But basically, as Brandon said, it's all about relaxation and enjoying the moment.

yes...relaxation...how could I forget that one.

Smoking alone isn't that bad...you're right swissy...let's you enjoy your time on your own.

Im with Swissy on this one...when i smoke, i almost ALWAYS smoke alone except for when with "cigar" buddies...for the most part, people(most the wife!!!) tend to stay away when im smoking. I smoke to relax and get away from things for a while. Cruising the internet, hanging out in the back yard, working on projects in the garage, drinking with buddies...all favorite times for me to smoke a good cigar.

..exactly.

For me, a great smoke usually starts with the wife and me on the deck. She finishes her cigarette much quicker than I do, so I get some "private time" alone to reflect, relax and enjoy the smoke.

Other aspect is herfing with my local buddies. A great scotch on my friend's deck, with him and I checking out a new cigar and commenting on its taste is a fine afternoon.

I like both the solitary times and the times spent with quality friends; that's the smoking experience for me.

I've always been partial to tobacco products, 18 year snuff user and occassional cigarette smoker. I stopped using snuff the day that I started smoking cigars. I enjoy full time hobbies, and to me cigars are exactly that. I enjoy the ritual of collecting and taking care of my cigars as much as I do smoking them.

LMAO. I just didn't want to type what Swissy did :D

I almost always smoke alone, usually while I am driving home from work (50 miles). I find it a nice time to reflect on the successes of the day, and overlook the troubles, wind down...

I enjoy smoking with my old man, I enjoyed visiting with Scott, Brad and Dirick the other night.

The best times however are when I am alone, and setting in my lazyboy, a good brew, or iced tea, on the end table, some good tunes on the stereo, and nothing to really think about. I like to look the cigar over, contemplating it's journey, it's history. I like to try to blow smoke rings. I like the flavor. I like the solitude. It is my time.

FWIW...

I smoke for relaxation. I either smoke on the porch while reading, or smoke on the way home from school (my college is an hour away, so I can get through a decent smoke). The lifestyle could be documented in "Zen and the art of Cigar Smoking".

Nurture or Nature

a good head buzz ???

nah, it's just relaxing

For me its the relaxation, smoking a cigar almost forces you to slow down and relax. Selecting a cigar, examining it, cutting it, lighting it, and of course the smoking part, its all part of the experience. I never really do much besides read while smoking, newspaper and coffee in the morning or a good book in the evening. I used to smoke cigarettes during breaks while working at various restaurants and coffee shops, so I have always equated smoking with relaxing, and a cigar is a longer break with a flavor and complexity that is in a whole different dimension. That, and I have always thought smoke in any form is just really cool. Still working on the smoke rings, though.

I'm a bit high-strung (I know, it's hard to believe) but cigars actually have a calming effect for me. Enjoying a good cigar gives me time to slow down, think about things more in debth and most of all....relax!

It's nice to think back to certain cigars that really stand out because of the company I was in at the time, etc. :D

Just what Swissy said and I like to smoke with good friends for good times and good conversation.

I mainly smoke to relax and just chill. But another reason I smoke, is because I love to. Not sure why, something just attracts me to smoking. Maybe I have a smoke fetish... ??? Playing with the smoke is especially fun also. Trying to make smoke rings and whatnot. :D

Cause it makes more since to smoke them, then use them as chew toys for your dog!
