As most of you know, I'm a huge Houston Astros fan and I subscribe to the MLB package through my local cable company so I can watch all the Astros games throughout the year.

Sometimes the announcers are the regular Astros announcers and other time it's the announcers from the "other" team and at times they're pathetic.

Last week, the Astros were playing the Dodgers in Los Angeles and the announcer for all the games was Vin Scully. He's been around forever and he's known for his "deuces wild" comment every time the count is 2-2 with two outs :D

I have to say, Vin Scully is a class act. He is probably the best play by play guy in the business. He is alone in the broadcast booth which is rare these days, most teams have two or three guys and sometimes, they're doing everything BUT calling the game.

Vin ALWAYS had some very unique trivia about EVERY player who's batting which I think is amazing. He obviously prepares more than anyone I've ever seen for a game and it's a real treat to listen to him call a game. When the Dodgers are faltering, he keeps a positive attitude and when the Dodgers are killing their opponent, he doesn't rub it in or act like a jerk like some of these other guys do.

You Dodgers fans should be very proud of Vin, he's one of the best!

He is an F'n Baseball God, and I am privilaged to have him call our games. He will be missed when he hangs 'em up, or departs this world like another legend Chick Hearn...

I've always liked Vin. Especially his call of Hank's 715th.

I can't argue with your post Bill. Vin is the last of an era. :( To be with the same team for as long as he has been with the Dodgers is an amazing feat as well. I will say this, even though I am a Giants fan I still love listening to Vin. When I get to watch the Giants play the Padres locally (SD) there are a couple of nimrods, Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grant, calling the game or if they are televised on ESPN its with Joe Morgan and Jon Miller. Jon Miller I can stand but Joe Morgan, please get the hook! Now all the chat is about technique and calling strikes and balls but very little history as Vinny does. Love Vinny, just love the man.

I didn't want to point my finger at a specific team's announcers but yeah, those guys are not too good.... :whistling:

coventrycat,

we definitely are. when i was a kid, there was nothing like listening to vin call the games on my transistor radio (remember those?).

from what i have heard recently, he only calls home games and away games west of the rockies. further, i believe his contract is up after the 2008 season (next year!) and is seriously considering retiring. when he does retire it will certainly mark the end of an era in MLB.

he is definitely ONE-OF-A-KIND living treasure and a class act.

thanks,
mike

I remember when I was a kid there were very few games on t.v. (this is before cable, yes I'm that old). We were lucky if there was one a week. The only way to see the games was through Vins eyes and he painted such a great picture for you that it seemed like you were right there watchig with him. He has this amazing way of telling stories without missing a beat of whats going on in the game. I think this is a lost art with anouncers today and he will be missed when he is gone.
