I'd like to thank all the veterans of foreign wars, especially those who continue their service by joining VFW Posts. My father passed away last Saturday and the Charles E. Fidler Post #9469 performed a VFW ritual at my Dad’s service that was so moving. Even though my Dad was not active in the VFW lately, 10 men gave up an evening at home to come honor my Dad. My Dad was a WWII vet, but there were vets of all ages and wars there, to honor my Dad’s service even though they never met him. The leader (didn’t get his title or rank) said that 1,000 WWII vets die each DAY.

And many thanks to the current service members who provide Military honors at the burials; I lost it during the flag folding and presentation.

I felt so… don’t know what word… glad that they were there to remember what my Dad did.

Going through old photos, (Dad didn't give many details about his service) we found out that Dad joined the Marines Dec 1941 (probably Dec 8th, like many did) and was discharged in July or Aug of 1945; 4 years and all in wartime.

Many thanks and SEMPER FI

Bruce

My condolences to you and your family for your loss. Also, on behalf of your father, please accept my sincere respect and gratitude for his service. They truly were the Greatest Generation.

Sorry to here that. I was with the VFW because my grandpa always swore by them. A couple of years ago I switched to the DAV and this year I am now a Lifetime member. But I have to say this, the VFW posts have so many friendly people that help other veterans out. maybe the younger generations will get active in the organizations so they keep going so when things like this happen, someone will step up and help.

Sorry to hear such news Bruce, I think the ceremony sounded fitting though.

Guys like your father who fought in that war make what we do out here look like childs play.

You have my sympathies.

First of all,What you're doing isn't Childs play. I remember when I left for Viet Nam my dad whished me luck and I told him not to worry it was only for a year. His reply was "It's not for the duration"? Those WWII vets served until it was over. There was no time limit. You had no idea if you were "short" or not. You just served untill it was over, and no one knew when that would be.

God rest your dad Maggs.

I'm sorry for your loss, but grateful that the VFW provided you and your family comfort.

Every year the local VFW post hold a parade and memorial service on Veteran's Day at the local cemetary in honor of soldiers who had served. No one attends, other than a few family members and the VFW crew - usually around 20 or 30. It's always moving to see it - and I respect and am grateful that they continue to honor those who have served - even if the rest of the community doesn't.

I remember clearly as a child accompanying my dad (a WWII Navy vet) for the Veteran's Day ceremony. Always VERY WELL attended in our community back in the 60's. Sadly, not anymore...
