Well, it seems that I haven't purchased a humidor in....oh....two months, so now I need to upgrade....AGAIN! This time though I'm going bigger and eliminating some smaller humidors. I've got two buddies I promised a few 20ct humidors to, so I'm giving those away to them, leaving myself with a 100ct humidor, 25ct and a 16qt cooler. I was thinking about purchasing a 48qt cooler from walmart and making either my 16qt cooler my "boxes" coolerdor or vice versa.

Here's my question.....does anyone have this particular cooler? I would to transform either the 16qt into a nicer looking cooler or making the 48qt into a nicer one. Basically I would love to peak inside your cooler if you have either a 16 or an 48 to see what you did with it!

Also, I have a PM into Viper, but can anyone tell me how many lbs of beads i would need for the 16 and 48? (Looking to eliminate the kitty litter from my 16qt...too messy). Thanks!! (BTW- I cannot go any bigger then the 48...i have to transfer these down to school and back two times a year..and it's a pain in the as$!

Here's the 48 i'm looking at from Walmart.com:

That 16 would make one hell of a herfador, but beyond that I can't imagine it would be too useful for storage ;)

Seriously though, how many boxes can you get into that little one?

Take the 16 , fill it with water and flip it upside down. Bet it is empty inl ess than a minute which would mean no-go for a storage container.

I just bought a 70 quart cooler from Walmart for only $37 bucks. For a cooler that size, Viper recommended 1/2 pound bag of beads, and it's keeping the cooler at a nice even Rh.

My first cooler I bought is that exact 48qt one, and it works just fine. Measure the inside dimensions and figure out the square inches and it will tell you right on Viper's site how many beads you need.

edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I saw the 120 qt ones at Wal-Mart here the other day on sale for $48, so you might want to check.

mine seems to hold the humidity just fine, i've had it for about a year now. :whistling:

And just how many pounds of beads do you have in it? :p

Try that water test he suggested, I bet it leaks like a sieve.

Okay, I see your guys' point. I must have 1.5lbs of crystal kitty litter in there. I'm not arguing that you are wrong with this question, but i'm going to ask it for learning purposes -----and to see where to go from here...

The question: So far I haven't had any problems, yes I have a lot of litter in there, but no issues of burn issues or damaged sticks, so what's bad about this set up? (Again, please do not take this as a snooty question, i'm just trying to learn right from wrong :))

Thank you!!

Oh- anyone have any info regarding my orignal post?

As long as it works, its all good brother, but for long term storage it might give you problems.

And no I don't have that cooler, but rubbermaid does make good ones. Smellysell does have that exact same one and he said it works well a few posts up.

I appreciate these posts Wurm---i'll be sure to keep a very close eye on all the sticks that I leave in that cooler. Thank you for the heads up

Smellysell-- did you customize your cooler or did you just plop your boxes into it? I've been plopping boxes into the 16qt and it's become.....messy to put it nicely. Just wondering if there's some other way to do it (not sure that there is). Also- do you know how many boxes approx. your 48 holds? Thanks in advance!!!

Somewhere a few threads ago, one of the Brothers had a super sweet set up in a igloo 120 qt. It was vertical and had a great set of shelves in it, that would be the way to go. I can't find the link right now, my net is super slow today.

As for you post, I used the rubbermaid, but not for cigars, it sure did keep my tasty adult beverages nice and cold :whistling:

I just set up a coolidor about a month ago and I was looking at the very same cooler you have shown. I tested it out just at the store, and the lid felt a little loose to me. had a good snap sound when it shut, but felt a little loose around the seal. I opted for a coleman cooler of relatively the same size. wal mart has a ton of them and I liked the seal a lot better.

Hope this helps. Wish I could post a pic but I'm not that savvy.

guess I can after all

When I first bought it, I gut down some plastic coated metal shelves for it, but I eventually took them out because they took up too much space, and just piled them in there until I grew out of it.

Coolerdor

Ok, I found the link, and I WANT ONE......

I'm getting to be in the same boat of needing to upgrade my storage...

My problem is that my wife and I are currently shoe-horned into a one bedroom apartment in Hollywood with no storage space, and I just don't have anywhere I can PUT a cooler!

I'm actually contemplating renting humidor space at a local shop...

I recently combined all of my little humi's and tupperdors into a coolidor.

I got a 54 qt igloo marine cooler from Academy for $20. After combining all of my beads from their various sources, I have about a pound and a half, which is more than enough for a mostly filled cooler. But you can never have too many beads.

I didn't put shelves or anything in there though and it sits on the ground like a normal cooler. But its kinda fun digging through everything trying to find what I want, plus I keep the "go to" smokes near the top.
