So I finally get up this morning at 11am and decided to start my morning ritual and checked my bank account. I noticed to strange direct deposits. I think of who would have that information and can think of only 3 different places. One of which I havent worked for over a year so that scratches that one out. I decided its time to make a call to the bank and find out what is going on. It has to be a mistake, right?

I find out its from the US Treasurer Office. Now I am at a loss. And if you are thinking taxes, impossible on that account. So needless to say, I'm not touching it till I can find out exactly what it is. If its legit, it will have made my day cuz it was enough I buy a 3 to 5k stick humi and still have enough to put a good dent in filling it up.

Anyone else have this happen to them and it was legit money for you?

wow thats kinda crazy, I hope its lagit. Can't say anything like that has ever happend to me.

This happens all the time around tax season. It's most likely someone else's return. I wouldn't touch it, you'll get in a whole mess of trouble if you do and the judge doesn't believe you didn't notice the unusually large amount of money appearing in your account.

This sounds like a reasonable explanation...

Someone could have requested that their tax refund get deposited into their account, and provided incorrect routing info. They may have provided routing info to your account instead. Or someone at the IRS could have transposed some account numbers.

I knew I guy who was out of the country for several years, and when he got back the IRS claimed he owed them something like a million dollars in back taxes. He did a little research and found out that someone had opened up several accounts in his name with a kind of a lot of money in each one. he still hadnt gotten it all worked out last I heard, but I think it turned out to be drug money. I do know that it has caused him a whole heap of trouble, and that he will never touch a dime of it without getting arrested.

Well the account is new. You would have to know the routing number and the account number. That would be odd to get both of those. Since before the merger, that info was only known to 3 places and after the merger, only 2. And the bank contacted the places that needed that particular information.

I will know more tomorrow when that actual deposit information is tagged onto it. ALl they can say right now is US Treasurer which is also where my Disability comes from and also GI Bill. And the disability is always paid on the 1st unless a holiday or weekend. Then its bumped up. Not in school at the moment and have like 2 1/2 months left of my GI Bill. Since last year was my first time to pay taxes in over 4 years, just weird. Time will tell this week hopefully.

Better yet, contact the Treasury about it.

But if your life is anything like Earls, then tell you they don't have anything on record and to leave them alone.

Well...I am not going to touch it till i find out. Its more than my disability check and I cant afford to pay back something like this. :(

If your account is interest bearing, leave it. If not, after a week, I'd move it to an interest bearing instrument till the real owner catches on.

That's pretty sound advice. You can move it, cash it out, do whatever you want with it. Just be prepared to have to turn it over on short notice.

Uncle sent me a check for $232 out of the blue once. I returned it and eventually another check showed up. After 6 months I deposited it and 5 years later Uncle came looking for it. If you can, put it in a CD or money market and at least make some interest on it.

Back in '01, the owner of the firm where I worked discovered close to $2M had been mysteriously deposited in his bank account. He did nothing for about a week; but fearing that terrorists may be attempting to hide money under his name (this was not long after the events of Sep. 11), he decided to report it to his bank. It turned out to be a clerical error, and the paltry reward they gave him was the interest earned on the sum for the period it was in his account! When he realized that it wasn't anything shady, he joked that he should have withdrawn all the funds and fled the country...

I reported it immediately. I will hopefully know tomorrow wtf is going on since the information should be posted. I will then know where I need to direct calls to if I need too. Doubt its a clerical error and may have an idea what it is...But for now, I will just have to wonder.

Way back when my credit union made a mistake and deposited a very substantial amount of money in my savings account ($3200).

After 3 months of seeing the amount on my statement I called and asked them about it. The girl on the other end said "So that's where it went!" sounding very relieved.

They let me have the interest accrued :)

This is a direct deposit from the US Treasury Department. Definitely NOT a tax refund so this is clear. It could be any number of things dealing with the VA system since they are the only ones that actually have this information. :D

Not quite the same... but kind of!
Two weeks I was at work and the guy that delivers commission checks shows up late on a Friday. I am super busy and pay him little heed. He says I got a check for you and I say fine and then he leaves. I finish the work I started and look at the envelope and think, "Damn, I have no idea what this is for!" So I open it up. Its for over 10 K ! I look at the address of the property sold and it rings NO bells, and the house is out of my territory. I make a call to our office manager. She says she'll figure it out on Monday. Convinced the $$$ ain't mine I try to convince her to let me cash it and split the difference (jokingly). Reluctantly I leave it in her desk for the weekend. Monday morning comes around and my manager tells that indeed it is MY check! I had a call-in for a house listing a year earlier that I referred to another office. I ran to the bank with a big smile!
And thanks to you bastiges I'm thinking about the OpusX 22 2005 Set... :p
