Unhappy Thread

You see, every so often a man comes upon a crossroad, and has to make the decision as to which way he thinks is best. Sure, one way may appear to be better, but “appearances” ain’t always the best indicator.

Yup, I’m babysitting a French bulldog, for whom I have ZERO attachment. Said animal busted out the door like a convict thru an open door and proceeded to seriously wound one of my chickens. Feathers everywhere and a bloody girl we’re now doctoring(well, Michelle is.). If she can’t be fixed, well, circle of life shit, ya know.

My crossroad ya see is this, if I find the animal that hurts/kills my livestock, they won’t generally do it a second time, especially if I witness the event. One road takes me down a path of problem solved! That same road sets me up for a rash of chit with the owner!

The other road(the well paved wise one), leaves me with certain hatred for said animal. Yes, it’s just a chicken, you may say, but my girls don’t fear dogs because we have one. So they are easy prey! Plus, they’re my family! Ya just don’t mess with my family! Period!

Im pouring a medicinal concoction in hopes it “shows me the way”. In the meantime, one can dream, right?! 😤

How much longer are you stuck in said predicament?

I’m hopeful on a week or two. Honestly tho, that’s not a guarantee. We are implementing correction protocols as I type. A reoccurrence will not happen. Thanks for asking.

Just out of curiosity to understand the situation better, who is the owner of the dog and your relationship?

Any possibility of shipping it off to a boarder for the remainder of its stay with you?

I 100 percent understand your feelings, but if it were you and I, and you accepted the responsibility of watching my doggos while I was out of town for some reason, the chickens would be the least of your problems if I came back and something had happened to my dogs because you failed to care for them or intentionally harmed them. I say that as a friend. I'm not sure your relationship with the owner but, in the case of you and I again, I would feel the responsibility (and guilt) to try and make it right in whatever way I could if I returned and found out what my dog/s did to your family members.

If it helps your decision at all, keep in mind that it's not the dog's fault, either -- it's a dog! That's what it thinks it is supposed to do. Don't punish it in a manner that can't be taken back because it was simply following instincts that the owner has not properly trained the thing to override. I say this with the utmost respect for you, Floyd. You accepted the responsibility of making sure the dog is cared for while the owner is gone (ASSuming there were no understood caveats between you two about what to do if it causes problems). It's up to you to either make it work at your place or find it safe and proper alternate accommodations for the duration. It may cost you a shekel or two, but hopefully the owner will understand your predicament and make it right for you -- I know I would.

I hope your little buddy pulls through! Definitely keeping y'all in my thoughts. Man, I hope things turn around for you soon!

Fellas,

My Mother-in-law is the owner of the Frenchie, hence the "rash of chit" comment. Emma is alive and well and I am going to take better precautions to make sure this doesn't happen again. Honestly, I was just blowing off steam while we waited to see if the chicken was going to make it through the initial "ah shit" time.

I have many issues, but whacking a dog that I'm caring for ain't one of em. I'm also not a vindictive person(well, most of the time) so Emma is still in good hands until which time she can return home. Truly, I was just venting.

The hen, after resting in solitary confinement overnight, is back with her girls(and Harlan). She seems ok, in fact, she ran away from his "stanky leg" dance and made him find another girl, ;) so she's got that going for her.

I appreciate the thoughts and comments. Guns are all put away(if truth be told, the pistol was for the hen. I wasn't gonna let her suffer if she was hurt too badly) and all is calm. Carry on!

***edit***: Nick, after rereading your post, you are spot on. As I said, I was just venting, spur f the moment type thing. Emma was never going to get shot. We were aware of her change them and had "sit and stay" down pat with her, when we opened the door. This time she just decided she was going. Our fault indeed, and we'll adjust accordingly. Lastly, you are more than correct with in your assessment of coming home and your/my dog being gone due to the caregivers error. I'm with ya and appreciate the words.

For the final time, for the people that don't know me, I was venting and Emma was never in any danger. I was aggravated and by the time I was done typing, I had it pretty much out of my system. I still hit "post" to share what others may have had happen. Thanks for reading. FT

It's all good, Floyd, and I'm glad that your hen pulled through ok! Vent away, my friend. Vent away!

(Oh, shit... mother in law. This changes everything!)

Nick, not everyone is as fortunate, but my mother-in-law is a wonderful woman who is too kind for her own good. She loves that dog with all of her heart and has left it with us for safe keeping. Ain't no way I'd do anything to hurt it. I'll liken it to your own dog chewing up your favorite (enter item here) and you catching it. A few cuss words later and an "I'm gonna kill you" and you're over it. All good.

And for those still doubting, I can send a pic of her, with todays newspaper, as proof of life! 🐶📰

I require proof of life.

Oh, I get it, my friend. Before he "became family", our last dog, Dolby, caused 10x more damage than two Rottweilers we had previously. Dolby pulled my motorcycle over twice, chewed all of the deck rails, and dug EVERYWHERE. Luckily all that damage was mainly outside, though we did have a few floor moldings become recycled as dog poo. Even after all of that (and a LOT of swearing), I couldn't be mad at the little dude.

I have no doubt you are over it, already. And, yes, you are one of the lucky ones when it comes to mother in laws. Mine is batshit crazy...

It's amazing how resilient chickens are, they aren't easy to kill! My big man has a taste for chickens, part of the reason we ended up sending him to summer camp as we just weren't spending the time with him training that he needed.

I’ll tell ya, on that note. M brought two mini-Rex rabbits with her, when she came to KY. They were potty trained, so the ran around the 2nd floor. They destroyed my baseboards, window sills, alarm clock cords, bifold doors, etc. Their best move was chewing a hole in the underside of my waterbed. Caused a cascading waterfall in my downstairs dining room! There wasn’t even enough meat on them to make them worth eating, so I had to suffer thru it. Lesson learned tho, no more rabbits!

Hitachi? I didn't know they made heavy construction equipment. They make a damn fine grill though! ;) Sorry you're stuck!

Floyd T
They also make the cutest little mini-excavator, too! It pretty much looks like a small, tracked jet ski with a wittle, wittle scoop on front and a wittle, wittle bwade in back. It's just totes adorbs. I need to find a picture of it.

Hitachi manufactures over 23,000 different items world wide. ;)

Pictured below, perched atop my SRV Charley replica, a very old & experimental 4 meg RAM design from 1989 , produced on a 300 mm wafer; HSCUS, Irving, TX.

There is nothing like a trip to the dollar store to reinforce the benefits of healthy living. And not reinforcing by example!
